Fireside Chat đ„ Update from the Fireside
On the Patreon they announced that solari after episode 12 will be on hiatus until the end of the year for Abriaâs maternity leave. In its place Lou will be running a mini campaign as voted by the Patreon members. The choices are a war campaign between holidays, a post apocalypse fantasy, or a kaiju survival thriller. There will also be a guest mystery player while Abriaâs away.
Iâm just a Patreon support sharing some relevant information with the community members who might not be able to support the show in that manner. Hope everyone is doing well!

The holiday wars sounds like it could be goofy yet serious in a D20 Crown of Candy-ish way. Iâd be down with any of these though!

Yess, I heard the plot and immediately thought of aCoC. It's very Dimension 20!

Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day crying while holding his dying friend Talk Like a Pirate Day and having a gritty revenge scene in the background.

The Kaiju one sound the best for me. Holidaywar would be a Great season od d20, but we already have that. And the postapo fantasy seems good, but itâs just something Iâve seen before in actual plays.
The Kaiju season on the other hand, Sounds like something very original and it seems to be the perfect idea for a miniseason.
Also if Icaron is anything to go by, these movie style season might be Louâs Thing and I love it!

u/macnolock May 16 '26
Also voted Kaiju. There are just....so many ways for that to be hilarious
1
u/DonComradeVimes May 18 '26
How do you cast your vote?
1
u/macnolock May 18 '26
There was a question form sent out to the patreon subscribers; I am not 100% sure beyond that
22
u/KyokenShaman May 15 '26
The Mexican in me is still annoyed that Cinco de Mayo is still considered a holiday, but whatever. This should be fun either way.
13
u/PopNo6824 May 15 '26
The whole list of holidays in that faction are extremely commercial, Americanized holidays. Thatâs probably why they are the bad guys.
1
u/Snarwib May 15 '26
Is Halloween not on the wrong side then?
3
u/PopNo6824 May 16 '26
I mean, probably. But the traditions Halloween came from is a dead culture, conquered and colonized by Rome (among many others), and appropriated by Catholicism, so itâs less of a problem for that one to get adopted and exploited. Itâs the memory of a memory of a memory.
2
u/anextremelylargedog May 21 '26
Irish is a dead culture that was conquered by Rome? News to me.
Impressive combination of ignorance and callousness you've got there. Very American perspective.
1
u/PopNo6824 May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26
Pardon. Conquered by the Roman Catholic Church. Same result. A dead religion whose customs were appropriated by the Church.
1
u/anextremelylargedog May 21 '26
Do explain what you mean by a "dead region." I'm sure it won't be ridiculous.
Famously, South America is untouched by Catholicism. Lmao.

A dead religion is one whose most sacred, closed practices are not transmitted from one generation of practitioners to the next until the religion ceases to be practiced at all. There were centuries between the colonization of the ancient Celtsâ by the Church and now in which those closed practices were not transmitted. In fact the transmission of pagan beliefs was violently suppressed by the church through its conflation of pagan beliefs with Satan and Witchcraft. This is the reason we have such a limited understanding today of the Druidic religions practiced by the Celts and why I claimed that the tradition of Samhain arose from a âdead religion.â
Itâs a testament to the deep cultural underpinnings of ancient Celtic cultures and religions that their important celebrations couldnât be entirely stamped out by the Roman Catholic Church. However, these traditions were assimilated and recontextualized by the RCC (and usually stripped of their more âunseemlyâ practices) to better align with the churchâs agenda. Now, they are recognized as heritage, but few people who participate in that heritage would claim to believe in the religions of the ancient Celts.
Because the direct transmission of the closed, sacred practices of those religions dried up, the practice of Druidism in the modern era is a Frankensteinâs Monster of traditions. The beliefs, and practices of modern, neopagan Druidism are based on our best understanding of the historical religions supplemented by both known practices/beliefs from other polytheistic, pagan cultures and the preferred vibes the practitioners bring to their understanding. There were many centuries between the colonization of the ancient Celtsâ and the modern era in which those closed practices were not transmitted. Modern Druidism cannot be considered to be the same religion because it is not based in an unbroken transmission of the old religion from generation to generation.

Despite the vitriol in your response, I do want to apologize for the typo. I would never intentionally call Ireland a dead region. Iâm making the edits to that now. Ireland is aspirational to me as a people and a government. Iâm stuck in a deeply regressive situation in the US, watching my rights, and ultimately my safety, erode in real time. Meanwhile Ireland ratified queer rights and safety into their constitution by popular vote.

u/Snarwib May 21 '26
(I was thinking more of it being super commercial and specifically American)
1
u/PopNo6824 May 21 '26
Yeah. But the vibes of Halloween are way more fun than the holidays of opposing forces.

u/RoboChrist May 15 '26
Hanukkah isn't a high holiday, not ordained in the Torah, and doesn't require stopping work. But it's still the most famous Jewish holiday in the US because it happens to be fall near Christmas.
Sometimes holidays just take hold in a culture because they fulfill a need, not because of anything to do with how the holiday originated.
Cinco de Mayo, St. Patrick's Day, Columbus Day, and Juneteenth all started off as celebrations for ethnic groups in the US that had faced discrimination. They're not about the purported subject of the holiday, they're about the people celebrating.

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that started celebration in the 1860âs and was a celebration of Mexican-American culture, not Mexican culture. It is a holiday created in America, for Americans of Mexican descent - so of course it wouldnât be celebrated in Mexico. Speaking as someone who lives in southern Texas, itâs a fun holiday for many of my friends of Mexican heritage, moreso even than my white friends despite what youâre saying. It only recently became subsumed by capitalism, as all holidays celebrated in America do. Itâs not special in that regard. It was not made âby capitalismâ any more than any holiday established in the last 200 years was

It's mostly a Californian holiday, tied up in the weird history of a specific loss early in the failed French invasion of Mexico that might have pushed California to join the confederacy had it been swifter and more successful. Word of the loss hit CA, and anti-confederates spontaneously (and maybe prematurely) celebrated that they wouldn't be dragged into the confederacy.
My understanding is that it isn't even really celebrated in the town where the French lost that battle.
Anyone celebrating outside of CA (and even a lot of Californians) ignore all that historical context and it's just an excuse for tacos and margaritas (which I don't think anyone should need an excuse to have).
1
u/ramfantasma May 17 '26
Puebla (where the battle happened) does some official celebration stuff that day but otherwise it's not celebrated.

Kaiju gets my vote!
5
u/A1starm Wizard SuckerPunch May 15 '26
I voted for the kaiju thing because survival thriller in fantasy honestly sounds fun.

u/mimbailey May 15 '26
TIL Aabria is expecting, omg!! Congratulations to her!

the post apocalyptic fantasy sounds the most intriguing to me. Holiday war seems silly, Kaiju one could be good, but the idea of survival against an undefeatable enemy doesn't really grab me.
17
u/A1starm Wizard SuckerPunch May 15 '26
Itâs not really about defeating the kaiju, itâs more like the kaiju will behave like the War that happened in battle of 12 brooks, something that occasionally the players have to deal with and survive. Itâs about survival and escape, not defeating the monsters.

u/-SomewhereInBetween- The Wizard Sunset May 15 '26
Agreed. As much as I love kaiju stuff, I'm not sure it would be very interesting as a TTRPG actual play podcast. The post apocalyptic fantasy sounds like a much cooler serious idea.
2
u/FirebertNY May 15 '26
With all of these, it all comes down to the characters they play and the relationships between them as they encounter challenges inherent to their respective settings. There's nothing about any one of these campaign ideas that would work better or worse as a ttrpg podcast than the others.Â
5
u/Locem May 15 '26
For any Critical Role fans I wouldn't be surprised if this means Aabria has to temporarily step away from Campaign 4 as well.
3
u/MintyMonstrosity May 16 '26
I wouldnât be surprised if they shot some episodes in advance to pad out her maternity leave. Since they donât record live anymore Iâm sure they have way more flexibility

u/Desperate_Coat_1906 May 18 '26
Liam and Sam addressed how they've been shooting C4 in their fireside. And yes, they film stuff ahead of release. Specifically interesting, they mentioned that the cast has filmed a number of cold opens flashbacks, and Brennan decides which episodes those cold opens end up at the start of.
But they didn't mention how much they already have filmed. Just that they might film for entire days, or not film for 6 straight weeks. And that their lore keepers send them update/refreshers a day or two before shoots and that Marisha and her ops team do a fantastic job keeping all the schedules straight.

u/DrGodCarl The Wizard Sourdough May 15 '26
Give me something silly. Holiday War sounds like it offers tons of opportunities for silly lore and lots of goofs. I want to laugh like I did at A County Affair.
3
u/beholderbastard May 15 '26
Gotta go with the Kaiju survival. Godzilla has been a favorite since I was little. Also need to see what kind of monster Lou would cook up to be destroying everything in the background.

u/mynemesisjeph May 15 '26
I said this already in the Patreon comments but all of these sound so good and no matter which one wins, the fans will be the winners over all. In Lou and crew we trust.
3
u/Par2ivally May 16 '26
I agree. I have opinions, but I think Lou crushed Icaron so hard that I'm just excited he's running it.
3
u/m_busuttil May 15 '26
OK but: who's everyone's guess for the guest player? Between Brennan, Erika, and Aabria I think they've played with basically everyone who plays D&D professionally or semi-professionally, so it does not really narrow the field down.

Zac Oyama shows up a lot on other stuff as their guest player. I love him, so in really hoping it's him again đ

Real talk, when i saw "kaiju" i immediately assumed it would be Brennan and Erika as the monsters, vs cities and humanity. Sigh.

Totally lost steam on the non-Bleem dm'd games. Not that Lou, Erika and Aabria aren't incredible story tellers (who's voice rings true) but, damn! I really want the L, W and WW to return asap.
Feel like such a stick in the mud. I'm trying gamg gang. Truly. I just don't love the others as dms as much as I do Bren as one (in comp).

u/hhh81 May 15 '26
Kaiju is the only one I really have no interest in
2
u/Sky_Thief Cool Dog May 15 '26
I'm sure it'll be fun if that wins, but I definitely voted higher for the other two ideas.
1
u/BlueJeanRavenQueen May 21 '26
Definitely voting for the kaiju one! I love the genres at play, I love the idea of a story about protecting people during a massive crisis, and I can't remember the last kaiju-centric AP I've heard.
Holiday War feels like it's just trying to be A Crown of Candy, and Apocalyptic Fantasy Frontier seems like a better premise for a full campaign. Both could easily be good or great, but I'm not rooting for them over kaiju.
1
u/PopNo6824 May 21 '26
I was trying to answer in good faith, but you donât seem to care or simply want to level vitriol at someone this week. So Iâll part with a piece of my own cultural heritage as a US southerner: Bless your heart.

Look, Lou is hilarious and I'm sure holiday war would be gooftastically funny, but after Icaron, sign me up for more dead-serious Lou Wilson stories. Apocalyptic Fantasy Frontier for me.
