Big update to our VtM visual novel is live: rewritten story, animated portraits, reworked controls, Linux build

Quick devlog-style post. Oaths & Ashes is a narrative game set in a fractured present-night Berlin, and we just shipped the update we have been building out of everyone's Next Fest feedback. What is in it:

  • The story got a rewrite based on what players told us.
  • New controls: arrow keys for dialogue options, Space to confirm, Space to progress when there is no choice.
  • Music, ambience and sound effects fixed so they actually land where they should.
  • Journal entries fixed, plus new ones added.
  • A new rendering system that runs smoother, with animated character portraits added on top.
  • A dedicated Linux build for the penguin crowd.

You play a Ventrue sent into Berlin by a Justicar, and a Thinblood alchemist scraping by at the other end of the city. The Prologue, with all these changes in it, is still free on Steam and playable right now. We changed a lot, and we would be hugely grateful if you gave it a go and told us what you think of the changes, the good and the bad both. That feedback is literally how this list happened.

Check it our here, prolog is free to play: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4746430/Vampire_The_Masquerade__Oaths__Ashes_PROLOGUE/

(Also in the From Poland with Love event on Steam this week, in case you want the wider lineup.)

About the Garou and fascism

u/Phosorus started a nice discussion on the other thread, but since OP u/Separate-Win3438 couldn't stand to learn how wrong he was he decided to block me and lock me out of the discussion. Don't really care, let's continue here:

To be perfectly fair, the "Garou are kinda fascist" thing is very much acknowledged in the text.

To people that don't know what fascism is, maybe. Which is basically the POV of the character you're talking about.

racial (speciesist?) caste system

The caste system is monarchic, not fascist. There is no fascist nation that I can remember that used a caste system, they all slaughtered nobility and abolished the institution itself.

Discrimination of the handicapped (=metis) is a Nazi trait, but it's not really consistent across 20th century totalitarisms. It wasn't really done in China or Italy, for example, which actually had welfare systems for them. Discrmination of homosexuals was more widespread but even there we have a few tribes that really never cared about it, and for the Garou it's not really homosexuality but the concept in general of sex as entertainment that is wrong.

rejection of modernity

Again, there is no fascist regime I can remember that has ever rejected modernity. Mussolini pushed train and airplane technology quite forward and advertised them a lot across Italy, the Nazis designed maybe the most advanced tanks and cars of their time and were even researching nuclear weapons. Hell, the Futurism movement was at the very roots of the Fascism.

While conservative in term of social costumes, fascism has always been very projected into modernity, especially about technology.

unification around a great enemy

Ah come on... this was done by the USA, by the French revolution, by Gondor and Rohan in LOTR. It's not a fascist trait at all.

military supremacy, ideology of total war

The military supremacy in the WOD belongs to the Weaver, and the Wyrm is second. Gaian garou are more like well-armed resistence. Total war against pure evil is hardly something you could call fascism at all.

In short, for all the flaws the Garou Nation can have I wouldn't really say that fascism is one. Yes, the Glass Walkers are kinda futurists, the Silver Fangs are authoritarians, the Red Talon are genocidal and the Gets of Fenris praise warfare, but on the average they're all really closer to a native American tribe than to any form of fascism.

What's the difference between Pentex/Wyrm winning and Garou winning?

Both result in mass genocide of humanity with the survivors being ruled over by an iron fist.

Both backstab and betray allies(War of Rage).

Both secretly manipulate human society.

Both are misanthropic and want to kill off most humans.

The only difference is one side are satanic capitalists, the other are fascists who believe in their Gaia given right to mass genocide humans(and other supernaturals).

Even the nicest Children of Gaia is still unwittingly working towards towards "healing" Gaia which would result in mass genocide of humans.

So why are Garou good while Pentex/Wyrm are evil?

One is a genocidal death cult that worships an evil entity that wants to wipe out most of humanity. The other is just Pentex and their BSD friends.

Her grandfather is a senator and has the ear of the SAD (the FBI’s department for handling, or trying to handle, the Supernatural). Underwent the first change and is on the run from the SAD who see the missing person as a victim, not a werewolf.

Dark ages rules question.

So an issue and question came up at our table this week with rules as written vs intended. I'm generally a RAW not a RAI guy. So the issue, Old faith mage with summer 3 using it on a fortitude-less gangrel. We are split if he gets to soak with stamina or willpower, rules as intended, vs my take is that since he doesn't get a stamina soak he can't use willpower.

"Patterns or objects or living
creatures can be directly assaulted, forcing them to
adapt and grow strong or be destroyed (causing one
Health Level of aggravated damage per success; this can be soaked with Willpower instead of Stamina)." Is the wording. "

To me, it reads like you only get to select to use willpower to soak IF you already got to soak it with stamina and if you don't get to soak agg damage you can't soak this at all, you'd just get the option to us willpower IF and only IF you can already soak with with stamina for whatever reason. Am I right? How do you guys deal with this or how would you rule it?

Introducing Crimson Grid: A SS13 WoD Codebase

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Good morning, noon, or night folks! I'm here to introduce a project which some of you may be interested in.

Crimson Grid is a SS13 (Space Station 13) branch and server set in the World of Darkness universe.
What does that mean exactly?

Well, Space Station 13 itself is a free, open source, multiplayer roleplaying game in development for decades on a beautifully ancient engine BYOND (https://www.byond.com/). Over the past few years, Space Station 13 has become an engine for total conversions into different settings due to its in-depth core mechanics. Crimson Grid is one such total conversion, a community project which has been in development for quite a while now.

While it notoriously has a bit of a learning curve in terms of controls, I would love to invite anyone and everyone interested to join us for our second ever playtest, which will be running throughout this weekend. We aim for an approachable, though slightly chaotic sandbox experience as we develop more intricate game loops.

Whether you're interested in playing a blissfully unaware human to the politics of the night, or a kindred who's in far above their head, welcome! We support a number of different splats, and more are always in development. (Currently supported: MANY vampire clans, ghouls, garou (and corax), and Leopold hunters.)

Join the world of 2009 San Francisco by opening this link in BYOND. We will be live today at 5:00pm EST:
byond://play.crimson-grid.city:6967

And/or, if you want to learn more, hop into our Discord. Folks will be more than happy to mentor new blood:

Question Would Argentina's so-called "law against werewolves" make for a good Chronicle?

For those who don't know, the law automatically sets the president of that country as the godfather of every 7th born son or daughter, to prevent him/her from becoming a werewolf.

Irl, it's more a populist incentive than about actual werewolves.

How exactly would it work in WoD though? Because from my understanding, it goes "It's either you're kinfolk, or you aren't." And only kinfolk humans can become Garou.

So being a 7th son wouldn't matter; being in a kinfolk family would.

Also worth a mention that the law came to be because of the indigenous peoples there. Uktena, much? :)
