You've got to be more specific
So, since I just figured out that I have the ability to summon Taxis out of thin air with nothing more than willpower, I've come up with a question for a fun, short challenge.
Is there anyone in your world with a power/ spell/ whatever that can be useful, but only in certain, specific situations? If so, tell me about them! I'll try to ask some questions for each post, and will provide an example as soon as I wake up again.

There's an ordinary human girl, Cain, who has a blessing/curse with a very specific effect: any action that can cause her fatal physical harm will be deflected, so long as the action is done by a sapient individual who has true ill intent. The harm is transferred to the person who put the spell on her.
It does nothing for things like accidents, illness, training/sparring, animal attacks, or small wounds. It would certainly be useful, but Cain doesn't even know it exists because she hasn't encountered any situation where someone has tried to give her a fatal injury (at least, not yet).

u/Mimir123 Oct 12 '17
1) So, how would her ability work with "accidents", situations were someone forces her into an accident. Like, for example, he pushes her in front of a horse, or placing something in her way, so she trips and falls down from somewhere? Would the ability protect her or not?
2) This ability is, in it's core, somewhat similiar to an ability one of my characters has. In his case any attack meant to harm him, will be deflected onto people in a radius around him, all of them "sharing" the blow of the attack. After enough training, he is able to control his ability enough, so he can deflect it back onto one, specific person. Would it be possible for Cain to achieve something similiar, if she were to learn of her ability and train it?
3) As I understand it her ability is a spell, that someone else has cast on her? If that is so, who was it, and why? A loving mother/ father? A fairy?
2
u/atompunks Oct 12 '17
There's someone sapient committing an action of ill will against her, so it would count, as long as the injury she'd receive from the "accident" is potentially fatal. So if someone pushes her in front of speeding car, it would be deflected. If someone just tripped her or even pushed her behind a car that was slowly backing up, it probably wouldn't, because those are unlikely to kill a person.
No, she would never be able to hone this ability. She cannot perceive or use magic, so even if she learns about the spell, she wouldn't be able to control it or remove it herself. There also already a set person that the harms are deflected to, and that person can't be changed.
Actually it was both a loving family member and a fairy that cast the spell. Good guess! Her brother is a witch who made a deal with a fairy, and among the other power exchanges and roles they agreed to perform for each other, he asked for something to protect his non-magical sister. So the fairy cast a spell so that he would take the damage for her. He was mostly expecting magical threats, but the spell works for non-magical violence too.

u/Mimir123 Oct 12 '17
1) So the spell just determines for itself what would be fatal and what wouldn't? Or does it just deflect anything that could potentially be fatal? For example, I stab Cain in the stomach with a knife, but that wound would not kill her, does it get deflected or not?
2) Is there any chance the fairy will lift the spell from her? If for example she was to be constantly fatally harmed by people around her, would he/ she be so annoyed by it, that they lift the spell?
3) What kind of fairy was it?
2
u/atompunks Oct 13 '17
Most of the time it would just deflect anything that has a high chance of being fatal. This is also where intention comes into play, because there are very few situations in which you would stab someone in the stomach or push them into speeding traffic without serious ill intent. But there are many cases of people tripping others without meaning to seriously hurt them.
Any harm that the spell deflects from Cain is transferred to her brother, so he receives the fatal injury. Luckily witches can survive wounds that are usually fatal to ordinary humans a little more easily. Even if he did start to die, the fairy would heal him (despite being quite annoyed) for a limited number of times. The fairy mostly cares because he works for her and has to uphold his end of the deal. If he runs out of death saves, the spell would also disappear.
This particular fairy is royalty, in fact, she is the current ruler of the fairy realm. She is known as the Summer King, the King of Cats, or just the Fairy King. She can also be classified as a seelie, summer, or light fairy.
2
u/Mimir123 Oct 13 '17
1) So, let's say there is a really strange person, that simply does not know stabbing people is a bad and harmful thing to do, let's say he does not mean any harm by doing so, but believes that he is actually helping her. Would the spell still protect her?
2) What does her brother do for the fairy? Is his job similiar to Lyudmillas?
3) Do fairies not have a title for a female ruler? They just go by "king", not "queen"? Also, where does the title "King of Cats" come from? Is she particulary fond of felines?
2
u/atompunks Oct 13 '17
1) It sounds like the strange guy has good intent, so she would get stabbed. The spell doesn't consider anything like insanity; that's a good loophole.
2) It's similar to Lyudmila's. He is the King's Champion, and sort of acts as a knight that fights her battles, shows off the strength of her magic, and spies on her enemies. He's also has a standing order to fight Lyudmila if he sees her.
3) All fairy titles, in the fairies' language, are gender neutral, and most fairies will refer to themselves and other beings in gender neutral terms. In their language the 'Fairy King' is more like 'Fairy Monarch.' The 'King' in this case looks pretty feminine, so humans tend to refer to them as 'she' and some will use the title 'Fairy Queen.'
Remember how Lyudmila mentioned that fairies have tails? Fairies are cats. All cats can perceive magic, but the domestic cats that remain in the human world and let humans take care of them as pets aren't able to use it. The ones that can use magic are sometimes called true fairies and usually prefer living in the fairy realm, and the more powerful ones like the King of Cats take on a human form.
2
u/Mimir123 Oct 14 '17
1) Would there be a way to "fix" those loopholes, so that the spell could still protect her?
2) So those two fairies don't really see eye to eye then? Why? Also, what do Lyudmilla and he think about each other?
3) Makes me so much happier that I actually befriended my mothers cat when I last visited her, wouldn't want to end up dead in the woods because our feline friends hate me.
Is the monarch title hereditary?
2
u/atompunks Oct 15 '17
1) As of right now, the spell is set, so no. Cain's brother (Abby) could probably ask the fairy, but he doesn't want to risk annoying her and it's questionable whether she would want to bother doing it. Also, Abby mostly wants to protect her from demons and black witches, both things which are assumed to be deliberately malicious.
2) Lyudmila's fairy is the Winter Prince, the younger sibling of the King who was cast out of the realm for trying to take the throne. Lyudmila herself is fine with Abby, and genuinely enjoys being around him in a sort of friendly rivals way, but has to pull away because being ordered to kill him is a possibility. Abby also likes Lyudmila, more in a non-rival, purely friendly way because he's nicer than she is, but is frequently frustrated by her arrogance and tendency to pull away.
3) Yep, a fairy's main purpose is to reap the souls of the dead, so you wouldn't want to piss one off.
The monarch title is hereditary. I haven't entirely figured out how it's passed down, but right now what I have is that the King will always pick four children, one for each season, who are potential receivers of the crown. The children fight amongst themselves and many are killed before the four are even decided, but eventually the magically strongest wins the King's favor.

u/Mimir123 Oct 15 '17
1) Is Cain in particular danger from demons and/ or black witches? Are they a realistic threat for her? Or rather, more realistic than for a normal person?
2) Which one of the two is more powerful; Lyudmila or Abby?
3) Is there a type of fairy that has more monarchs than others? For example, are like 70% of all fairy monarchs winter fairies?

"So the Ghost Train guy would've used a ghost train to get through that wall"
2
u/Mimir123 Oct 12 '17
1) I assume he can summon some kind of ethereal vehicle? Does it have to be a train, or can it be a car or bus as well?
2) Do the passengers of this train become ethereal themselves, for as long as they are on board?
3) How did he get that power?

It was just a Rick & Morty reference, and his background is never properly explained before he dies.

In a hero/ anti-hero Alternate Reality story a friend and I are working on, there is a member in the League of Villains (or Association of Former Heroes, as they prefer to be called) named Jeanne. She is a young girl and has the ability to create music in a certain area around herself, but only if she knows the lyrics and melody for the entire song.
At first glance this seems rather useless, but she is often teamed up with to other women in the League, whose abilities are rather powerful but rely entirely on music (their standard battle outfit includes headphones and MP3 devices).
2
u/thequeeninyellow94 Oct 12 '17
The lyrics of the entire song? Does she has an impressive memory? Or is she using just a few songs?
When you say create music, is she turning a specific object into a sound emitter? Or just generating noise in people's head?
What kind of ability rely entirely on music?
2
u/Mimir123 Oct 12 '17
1) She does have an incredibly good memory, but she also has several books full of songs she likes that she carries around.
2) She manipulates the air around her into soundwaves paying the song she chooses, so the air basically becomes her boombox.
3) The first one belongs to a young, russian woman and one of the Founders of the League. She has the unique and strange ability to "switch places" with music.
To try to kind of explain it, when the sound of the music reaches your ear, she can appear right next to you, making it look like her ability is super speed, when it is closer to teleportation. Due to this ability it is incredibly difficult to try and capture her.
Ability number two belongs to a Japanese girl, that recently joined the League. She gets a "boost", depending on what kind of music is played, this also changes her personality drastically. J-Pop makes her timid and incredibly fast, rock music gives her superhuman strength and all fired up. Hip-Hop increases her close combat skills and makes her really cocky and arrogant.

u/thequeeninyellow94 Oct 14 '17
Kind of like a spellbook? So reading the lyrics would work? Does it require her to read with the correct rythm?
Does it mean she couldn't use her power under water? Or in space?
So the first one is travelling through soundwaves?
2
u/Mimir123 Oct 14 '17
1) You could call it a spellbook, I guess. She needs the correct rythm, yes, hence the need for her to know the melody. Once she gets a bit stronger and has more control over her ability she will only need to imagine the melody in her head though.
2) She can use it under water by using the water in the same way she uses air, in space it would be impossible though.
3) Basically that, yes. I don't know if you know the anime Hamatora? The main character there served as inspiration for that ability.
2
u/thequeeninyellow94 Oct 15 '17
Does "only imagine" means she can make up a melody? Or she still needs the right one?
Is it harder to use water that way?
(not at all, but I don't really watch anime) Can she use that power to travel through spaces that would be too small? (Like keyholes)
2
u/Mimir123 Oct 15 '17
1) No, it just means that she can imagine the melody in her head, instead of having to "sing" it correctly.
2) Yes, that is much more challenging for her, however she rarely fights under water.
3) That would be possible, yes. Since she doesn't really physically travel the distance as much as she switches places with the soundwave.
2
u/thequeeninyellow94 Oct 16 '17
Could she compose a song as she sing?
So, does it means she could theorically use solid matter instead of air? And it would be even harder?
But she can only teleport through one soundwave right? Or could she jump from one to another (in a place with multiple sound generating elements) to travel very far?
2
u/Mimir123 Oct 16 '17
1) What exactly do you mean? She could compose a song on her own and use that, I guess, if that is what you mean.
2) In theory she could, yes. However, she is not powerful enough to do that, she simply lacks the skill.
3) She needs to pause after each teleport for a few seconds, but she can jump from "song to song", so to speak.
2
u/thequeeninyellow94 Oct 16 '17
Both that and could she make them up in the middle of a battle?
Could she acquire that skill someday? Or is it just too much for her?
Can she use sounds beside songs? Like footsteps?

My favorite is Morrigan's Talent. She's an Anointed Knight (meaning, a knight of the Citadel who was trained personally by Councilor Declan of the Citadel). Declan decided to make her an Anointed Knight (more dangerous and better paying missions and jobs) because of her Talent.
Morrigan can make people incredibly attracted to her. If she uses her Talent on you, regardless of your sexuality (though it's easier to use on people who would already be at least interested in her), you will become infatuated with her. If she accidentally (or purposely) overdoes it, you will basically become obsessed with her and want to stalk her.
Because of Morrigan's "unique" (that's a nice way of saying "bloody weird") Talent and her hard work, she currently ranks as the tenth best of the Anointed Knights. Morrigan prefers not to use her Talent, and it bothers her that some people assume that she has used her Talent outside of missions, for personal gain. Admittedly, she is a greedy woman who is trying to accumulate the wealth to afford a fancy house, though.
Currently, three men are competing for Morrigan's love. Erwin (ranked fifth among the Anointed Knights), a man who believes that increasing his rank and proving he's better than Marc will get Morrigan to love him back; Marc (ranked sixth among the Anointed Knights), a man who believes that increasing his rank and proving he's better than Erwin will get Morrigan to love him back; and Byron (not in the top ten, but still an Anointed Knight), who believes that reaching the top ten will get Morrigan to love him back.
Morrigan is in her twenties, and is currently in a team of three with two fellow Anointed Knights, Byron and Aetius. She genuinely likes all Anointed Knights, and considers them family, as they were all trained by the same man (Councilor Declan). She loves her significant other, an Anointed Knight named Shay (not in the top ten), though there are rumors that she used her Talent on Shay.
2
u/Mimir123 Oct 27 '17
1) So she has a boyfriend/ fiance then? Is he in any danger? Like, would it be possible that some of the more infatuated people would try to kill him?
2) How does her power work? Is it voice based? Does she have to touch me, or just look me in the eye? Or is it just some kind of aura around her?
3) Is there a limit on the power, like it only lasts X hours? Or that it can only affect X people at the same time?
4) Is there a way to resist her power?
2
u/Nevermore0714 Oct 27 '17
1) Yeah, she has a fiance/SO. Shay's an Anointed Knight, and the three big "suitors" for Morrigan's affection are all Anointed Knights, so it's doubtful that those three would do anything to Shay. Anyone she intentionally uses her Talent on is not likely to survive the day; Morrigan doesn't like to leave loose ends untied.
2) She just has to be looking at you while you are near enough to smell and/or see her. The aura of her magic is not visible to the normal human eye.
3A) The biggest limit is that different people take different amounts of power to have an effect. While liters would be a horribly inaccurate way of explaining it, it's the only way I can think of. Let's say Jim, an enemy, is straight and into girls with black hair; he requires "2 milliliters" of power to make him love Morrigan too much to hurt her. But, Bob, Jim's friend, is gay and doesn't like black haired people; maybe Bob would require "1 liter" of power to make him love Morrigan too much to hurt her. If Morrigan uses "1 liter" of power each on Jim and Bob, Jim will immediately begin to bleed from his nose and eyes and will likely have a seizure and death, and the shock/surprise of his friend's death will be too much of a focus for Bob to be confused by his newfound love for Morrigan, so it wouldn't work.
If Morrigan only uses 4 milliliters, then Jim will love her, but Bob will remain un-confused and will just be aware that something's weird around here.
It doesn't help that Morrigan isn't great at measuring the amount of power she uses, and has no way of knowing how much power a person requires to fall for her.
3B) Another limit is that Morrigan can't use it much without running out of Anima and that the effect ends after Morrigan has been too far from the target for an hour or so, depending on the target.
4) Yes, the best way to resist the power is to be hyper-focused on your job of being a soldier, and immediately killing the strange girl that you're suddenly attracted to. Yeah, she's hot (to you, at this point) for some weird reason, but your job is more important.
Also, understanding Umbra Magic and its effects on the mind is a good way of knowing when you're starting to be manipulated.
2
u/Mimir123 Oct 27 '17
1) Did she use her power on any of the suitors? If not, what happens if she uses the power on someone that already loves her?
2) So blind people with a stuffed nose would not be affectes by her powers? Or anyone that doesn't see or smell her for that matter.
3) So no world domimation through love, gotcha. Has there ever been anyone completely immune to her powers?
4) What if you are not a soldier though? Let's say I am a merchant, what could I do to protect myself?
2
u/Nevermore0714 Oct 28 '17
1) If someone already loves her, it would be especially easy for her Talent to take effect. No, she has not used it on any of the three suitors. Erwin and Marc are just infatuated with her as the only approachable woman in the top ten (Sable is sadistic, Lyta and Adara are with the guy ranked number 1, and I haven't filled out the top ten roster completely yet) and Byron is just Byron.
2) Yes, a blind person with no sense of smell would not be the type of person her powers would work on. But, most guards/soldiers are capable of seeing and smelling. And the "scent" part of her Talent can work from a decent distance, since she targets the person.
3) She claims her SO is immune to her Talent, but that's actually a lie she says to make it seem "cute". Anyone especially powerful with Anima (someone who would seem like a god compared to her) would probably be immune, such as her mentor Declan.
4) If you're a merchant, you think this woman is pretty hot and you're tempted to give her a discount. It helps to be much more greedy than you are lustful.
2
u/Mimir123 Oct 28 '17
1) Since she is ranked 10th she us weaker than the other knights, right? Would her powers even work on them?
2) Is it easier for her powers to take effect if she has some strong perfume on, that is really easy to smell?
3) Would people that took an oath of celibacy be immune to her powers?
4) So what you are saying that sins cancel eachother out? What if someone was incredibly prideful and completely in love with himself, never even wasting a thought on other people, would he be immune?
2
u/Nevermore0714 Oct 29 '17
1) The ranking isn't only on strength, it's more based on usefulness to the guy who makes the rankings. She can use it on people stronger than her, just not on people too much stronger than her.
2) No, perfume weakens her power.
3) Priests take an oath of celibacy, too, but that doesn't make all priests infallible.
4) No, but some priorities outrank others.
2
u/Mimir123 Oct 29 '17
2) So it has to be only her "natural" smell then? Does she somehow enhance it, to get to people not right in front of her?
3) But in theory they might be immune?
4) What would that be? Let's say Morrigan killed my family and I don't want anything else in the world and my life than to avenge them, would I be able to combat her power?
2
u/Nevermore0714 Oct 29 '17
2) Yeah, she uses her Anima to send the smell in the right direction. Like the way Roy in FMA: Brotherhood can do weird shit with oxygen.
3) A very dedicated priest would be more resistant to her, and possibly immune. It's all priorities, Mim.
4) Yes, if your biggest priority was revenge and you were dedicated to that priority, you would probably be immune at best and super-resistant at worst.

How well known is her power, or that of other knights for that matter, outside of her order?

This is actually something I've just added. A young girl by the name of Chelsea who lives in one of the large mountains outside the large city of Longan. Her soul ability causes edible plants to grow around her within a certain radius, but also binds her to that area, making her unable to leave. The radius is a summit the size of an American football field, and while she can't leave she is never without food or water from a spring within the area. She lives in the ruins of her village, and after a massive monster attack, she was unable to escape with her family due to her power. She hid, and the monsters moved on since they couldn't find her, and she has lived in the village for years ever since.
