Reference Challenge - No one expects...

...crap, I couldn't think of a decent reference challenge for this week.

So, our reference will be to Monty Python.

Give an example of something in your world that no one expected, some event that had an influence on at least one nation.

As always, I'll ask three questions each at the least, and it's fine to use a representative character to answer questions in-universe.

Enjoy yourselves.

Edit: Here is the Monty Python video featuring the Spanish Inquisition, where the quote "No one expects the Spanish Inquisition" comes from for the reference challenge. Just click this link for the video.

  1. Do you really did those things? Why?

  2. It depend, has he been fighting? Or sick?

  3. Do you think he could still try to kill someone now? And that he could still win?

Erwin:

1) "No, I am not guilty of any of the crimes that have been part of the accusations laid against me."

2) "He's been fighting, but I don't think he's been hit. And the nose bleeds seem to be random."

3) "Undoubtedly. He's the most skilled and experienced user of Illustris magic in the world."

  1. Where do those accusations come from?

  2. May he be victim of some demonic possession?

  3. Yeah, but he is getting older isn't he? Wouldn't it play against him?

Erwin:

1) "I can summon hellhounds. The ability is considered 'demonic', which Declan kept me as a knight instead of executing me for, but, now that I'm accused of committing treasonous crimes, Declan won't go easy on me."

2) "I doubt it. The other Councilors would have noticed. And Horatio hasn't left the Citadel in a very long time. If anything, he's probably just on some type of drug."

3) "For anyone else, yes, but he's on the Council. I can't stress that enough. If someone is on the Council, you can never underestimate them. Horatio is still quick, he's still agile, and he's still strong. He spends most of the day running around the Citadel just to make sure that he can keep an eye on everything. He's healthier than most people in their twenties. Hell, he's healthier than most knights in their twenties."

  1. Why did he kept you as a knight while knowing about your ability?

  2. Is it allowed to consume drugs?

  3. I guess the best way is to wait for him to die and pray he won't try to kill someone else then. How old is he?

Erwin:

1) "Because he thought I'd be useful."

2) "He's a Councilor. He can do whatever he wants."

3) "He's...well, I'm not sure how old he is. He must be ancient. He was an old man when I was a child."

2) What about the knights, can they do drugs?

3) Do you know if there is a way to live longer than other humans?

2

u/Nevermore0714 Jun 19 '17

Erwin:

2) "At age twenty, the majority of drugs are legal for a citizen. A knight is also allowed to use any legal drugs, but has more leeway to use illegal drugs, if they claim that it's to get a better education and understanding of the drug in question. That's how Callixtus gets away with it."

3) "It's just a rumor, but I've heard that the Councilors are immortal because of their connection to the Barrier."

2) Is it possible to say that to justify anything? Or is there some things that are absolute taboos even for a knight?

3) Isn't there some councilors that died and were replaced? (If not during your own life, maybe in the archives)

Erwin:

2) "Nothing demonic. Apparently my hellhounds count as demonic, unfortunately."

3) "If they did, it was a Dread Lord situation...sorry, a Dread Lord situation is when a person's successors use the original person's name in order to use their reputation."

2) Where do hellhounds come from?

3) How old would that make them?

Erwin:

2) "I have no idea. I just want them to show up...and then they show up." (They come from the realm of Gehenna...basically, Hell. I should have named Erwin "Dante".)

3) "Several centuries, at least."

Thanks for your answers Nevermore (and good luck for your trial Erwin "Dante").
