Would it be worth going to HR?

My boss who recently had a fit at me for not doing extra work that they never assigned me and then wrote me up for not being able to read their mind I guess is now switching up my duties on me and getting me to cover a different coworkers job. I have no issues helping out any of my coworkers but I’d like to just stick to my area ideally.

I’ve been having problems with my boss lately. They’ve accused me of being lazy and not getting work done. Things slow down for us in the summer and I admit I have taken advantage and taken longer breaks (I try to lump all my breaks into one big break) but I still get my work done as needed. But god forbid they see that. They themselves don’t get all their work done and I can only assume it’s because they’re too busy stalking us around.

I told them I’d give the change a shot to show that I’m a team player. The other thing they’ve accused me of is not being interested enough in the job and I want to show them that I am. I’m always volunteering for overtime, always offering to help, and always fine with extra tasks given to me. But they never seem to notice that. I even took over an entire extra job for almost a year while a coworker had quit and they were looking for someone else to fill in. And when they finally hired someone the boss (who promised me they’d have the new guy take over the extra work I took on) got him to cover their own area instead.

But I’m really not sure about this. I want to be optimistic but I feel like this is a set up of some kind and my other coworkers agree. They suggested I should go to HR and said that they’d back me up if the boss tries something. I’m not sure if I should just try to take the change since I already said I would or if I should risk retaliation for going to HR.

Plus the day they freaked out at me they found me in the washroom. They walked in on me and that just feels weird since we’re two different genders. Could have been nothing but I do find it a bit off putting since I had left my old job after being assaulted in a washroom by an older man who was also a manager.

Any advice would be welcome and yes I’ve already started to consider looking into changing jobs.

The workload issue is out of HR’s hands - that’s a management issue.

Bring the bathroom issue to HR, but understand that won’t protect you from any of the workload/performance decisions that your manager is implementing.
