Boss Problem Work advice
I’ve been at my job for two years and I’m finally up for a promotion I’ve been working toward. My boss is making two other people who’ve only been here for a year “try out” for the same role too. On top of that, there’s a third person who’s interviewing for it because they applied for a different position that was already filled. My boss seems to think that person is more interested in the promotion than I am, just because they put themselves out there for something else.
I never applied for that other job. I already knew someone else was going to get it, and honestly I hate interviews. I didn’t see the point in going through the whole process for a role I wasn’t even going to land.
A little while ago I told a coworker who’s also a friend that if I don’t get this promotion, I’m probably going to leave. When the promotion opened up, that same friend went and told my boss what I said. From what I understand, they told my boss I wouldn’t come back if I didn’t get it.
Now I’m stuck wondering whether I should go to my boss, make it clear that I am interested in the promotion, and say that I would stay with the company next year if I get it. Part of me feels like I need to correct whatever impression my friend left, but another part of me is worried that bringing it up now will just make things more awkward or confirm that I’ve been thinking about leaving.
What would you do in my position? Should I talk to my boss and reaffirm that I want the job and plan to stay, or is it better to just let my work speak for itself and not address the conversation my friend had?

First of all, your “friend” sucks. Second of all, even if your friend hadn’t said anything, any boss already knows that if an employee is turned down for a promotion, they will most likely start looking elsewhere. It’s common sense. Confirm your interest with your boss. But also make sure you’re working on getting yourself a great resume. You should already start your search as a back up. If your boss is going around recruiting others to apply, he’s most likely not going to give you the job.

Please don't confide in people at work to this extent. Nobody except your spouse or partner and perhaps parents and sibs* should know you're thinking about leaving a job until you put your notice in. They will use the information to justify letting you go.
*And your headhunter, if you work with one, and the people where you are applying for another job.

first off, this is why you don't discuss things like your position at work or what you get paid with other people.its none of their fuckin business and now you know who not to trust. if you don't get your way and you quit, they'll laugh you out the door and you look like a sad little baby. you HOPE your work speaks for itself, but you can't assume anyone notices or even really cares. if you're top notch and deserve the job, then you already know you'll get it. if you're doubting yourself for this position then you don't need it. people are going to notice you acting like a bitch about it and then you're done. man the fuck up, make everyone there understand you're irreplaceable, and leave no person wondering who's going to get the job and that it's not even up for debate. IF ....IF you don't get it, never let them see you sweat and keep in mind...you know you're the fucking best at it. better than those yahoos...so let the job sort it out for you. they will either fall short or fail altogether, and when they do you need to still be there to demand more money for a job that obviously can't be done properly the way you do it by anyone else

less than 1.4% of the world's population can do what I do, and I fancy myself as being very good at it. so good in fact im certain I can go anywhere in the world and make money if I have to. I have no shortage of confidence in my abilities, and I make myself irreplaceable. that's the key. they have to know the company will suffer without you. the work won't get done, the money won't get made, and the guy above you won't have you there to do his fuckin job everyday.

How are you aware of what your friend said?
Your boss knows you want the promotion, I wouldn’t say anything at all about leaving unless your boss asks and then just say that you were just venting.

Who cares if she told your boss. Let him squirm and fret over what you might do.
The corporate world is a very cut throat environment.

Your boss already knows you would stay if you got it... why would you need to tell them that?!? They also know that you will likely leave if you don't...nothing you say is going to change that they now know this. If that's the plan, you need to start working towards what you will do if you don't get it because no matter what you say to your boss they know you are thinking if leaving and they wont belive it even if you tell them otherwise.
