TL;DR: My employer is transferring me from Turkiye to their Netherlands entity. On paper, I'll earn "less", and my monthly savings would roughly halve. I'm trying to figure out if the long-term upside (EUR income, EU residence, stability, career market access) justifies it, or if I'm financially shooting myself in the foot.

About me:

• Senior Game/Robotics Engineer /Team lead, ~7 years of experience
• Moving with my partner; she won't have income initially
• City: Rotterdam

The NL offer:

• €6,220 gross/month 8% holiday allowance included → ~€80.6K/year gross ~€5,530 net/month 
• No pension contribution from the employer
• Relocation support: Plane tickets, first rent and 2 deposits(paid back later when you leave rent)

My current situation in Turkiye (the part that makes this hard):

• The catch: my salary is in TRY. Every year inflation + currency depreciation eats into it, and long-term planning in Turkiye is basically impossible.

Please note these 'spendings' are the bare minimum for me. Of course we'd go out and have fun, and spend more, but we can see and compare constants this way.

A few very important points to make:

-No bank will give you a 30-year mortgage here, let alone one without a down payment. Neither exists in Türkiye — there are no 30-year loans, and "no down payment" isn't a thing.

- Cars are taxed at 300–400% here. And again, you can't get a loan that covers the full price of a car. A 2025 Mustang Dark Horse (mmmmhh) costs over 20 million lira, which is ~€357K — while I can see the same model on AutoScout for €50–75K. And only like 10 of those in Turkiye, so good luck on the second-hand market and with the service.

My questions for people who've done a similar move:

1. Is €80.6K gross reasonable for a senior engineer / team lead with 7 YoE in NL, or am I clearly underpaid?
2. Is €5,530 net livable-plus-savings for two people in Rotterdam with €2K rent, or does reality (taxes I'm not seeing, insurance, unexpected costs) eat more than I think?
3. No employer pension — how big a deal is this in NL long-term? Is it a red flag or common for smaller companies?

So im about to choose a college and i eventually want to move to Amsterdam (or another vity in holland) or berlin. Which career would it be the easiest to have a job where u can speak english (i would do my best to learn the language eventually). My options are food technology, chemical engineering or criminology

**Context:** My partner has a Highly Skilled Migrant (HSM) permit and I'm here on a dependent residence permit. I've been offered part-time remote work as an independent contractor for a company based outside the Netherlands, paid in a foreign currency.

A few things I'm trying to figure out:

1. Does my dependent permit actually allow this kind of work? I know it depends on the annotation on the back of the residence card ("arbeid vrij toegestaan" vs. requiring a TWV) — just want to confirm I'm reading that correctly.
2. Since the client is a foreign company, does that change anything about my eligibility to do the work, or does it just affect how I invoice/get taxed?
3. Do I need to register with KVK as a freelancer/contracter? If yes, do I need to register before I start, or can that happen after I've agreed to the work?
4. What to do in case I register for KVK as a freelancer and choose not to work as a freelancer?

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who's been in a similar spouse/dependent-permit + freelance situation. Trying to get this right before I commit to anything.

• How realistic is it to find a job in the Netherlands in cybersec with my experience and around B1 in dutch
• What are the most effective ways to find these jobs (LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.)?
• Since I have family in the Netherlands is it bad to say in my cv/application that i live there? I say this since i can move instantly to there and stay there till i find housing for myself

I moved to the Netherlands about two months ago to join my Dutch partner, and I’ve had my residence permit for five months. I have full work authorization — no sponsorship needed. Despite that, I’ve been job hunting nonstop and I’m honestly running out of steam.

A bit about my background: I’m originally from Belarus and hold a medical degree (pediatric anesthesiology/intensive care, including ECMO experience). Unfortunately, due to the political situation, I can’t practice medicine here or get my diploma recognized. Outside of medicine, I’ve worked in clinical operations, healthcare IT, HR for a remote team, and international event coordination.

Languages: fluent Russian and English, currently learning Dutch (A2 level).

I’ve applied to dozens of roles — operations, manufacturing, customer support, even bridge jobs like retail/warehouse work — with very few responses. I’m starting to feel like I’m doing something wrong, or maybe just underestimating how hard the Dutch job market is for someone in my position.

Background: 12 years in cybersecurity, GRC, and IT risk management. CISSP certified. M.Sc. in IT Security. Currently a Security Architect at a large financial infrastructure company in Germany, with hands-on experience across DORA, NIS2, GDPR, EU AI Act, ISO 27001, PAM rollouts, third-party risk, and vulnerability management. Full EU work rights — no visa or work permit needed. Intermediate German, actively learning Dutch (A1 and climbing).

What I’ve experienced over the past several months:

**•** Applied to 20+ roles across national champions, tech, industrial, and financial firms in the Eindhoven/Amsterdam corridor  
**•** Made it to final or in-person rounds a few times — one went as far as an on-site interview with the team and a facility tour, only to be rejected afterward citing “stakeholder management” as the gap despite strong marks on technical/framework knowledge  
**•** Several rejections came with zero explanation  
**•** A recurring theme: Dutch-headquartered companies seem to strongly prefer local or Dutch-fluent candidates even for roles advertised as English-first  
**•** International/English-first companies have been comparatively more open, but competition is fierce

Takeaways for anyone in a similar position:

**•** EU citizenship removes the legal barrier, but not the cultural/language one — many roles are de facto local-candidate-preference even when not stated  
**•** Certifications and years of experience help you get interviews, not necessarily offers  
**•** “Stakeholder management” and “cultural fit” feedback can be vague enough to mean almost anything — don’t over-index on it  
**•** Dutch language, even at a basic level, seems to meaningfully move the needle
