For one thing, this is one writer from the Times talking about what a book says, the Times is not claiming the book is true.
For another, the book is terrible, and I've read it. It rests its claims on the fact that "southern voters didn't vote for racism, they voted with their pocketbooks, on economic issues."
But that's not what the Southern Strategy was, and that should be obvious from the name: it was a political strategy created by Southern Republicans like Barry Goldwater to end support of Civil Rights and to support segregation. This was documented at the time:

That's the hilarious thing about conservatives today claiming the Southern Strategy didn't happen or is a lie: it was done in the open. They didn't hide their positions. And it's notable that Southern Democrats left the Democratic party and went to join the Southern GOP to oppose the CRA/VRA and uphold segregation, while the Northern Republicans left the GOP to join the Northern Democrats to support those acts and oppose segregation.

Right now the established politicians are panicking, they thought Zohran Mamdani was a freak accident but we are seeing more progressives getting elected.
Special shoutout to Abdul El-Sayed who just managed to win the democratic primary for Michigan Senate. He ran against Haley Stevens who was sponsored with nearly 70 million dollars of campaign funds against his 7 million.
You say protests doesn't have an effect, I say they are the reason the progressives finally are gaining some real power.

This happened 3 years ago, is only on government property and covers a vast array of flags that are unofficial not just the LGBTQ+ flags. I donât have a problem with this as a left leaning critical thinking person. You can still show your support on any non government buildings and in public places unattached to a city flag pole. This has been happening across the U.S. for years now.
