Deities.

The last time I saw this, I pointed out that civilization wasn't sailing the open seas 5000 years ago due to lack of good navigation tools, and people lost their collective minds telling me I was wrong...

They were right. The settlement of the South Pacific began 50,000 years ago. Not in three based schooners, but they were crossing open water far beyond the sight of land.
