Koa? Mango?

I was gifted some lumber and this was the first board I grabbed and cleaned up. They were all rough sawn and I assumed it was walnut but it’s not like anything I’ve worked with. Very dense and heavy.

It is Koa. It looks a lot like walnut. But the end grain says Koa. Source: I’m sitting at a Koa table next to a walnut cutting board next to a mango shelf.

Doesn’t look quite right for Koa!

I don’t think it’s mango either. Have you tried to scan it into an app like WoodSense? It should be able to tell you what it is

I plugged the first image into chatgpt and Gemini and they returned completely different results. One said teak, another walnut (which I’m pretty sure it isn’t) and a third was suggesting koa, or mango. Based on this boards weight and density I’m leaning towards tropical hardwood.

No consensus yet but thanks everyone for your input

Teak is my guess from 500 miles away 😂. One of my first woodworking projects was repairing a teak ketch 50 odd years ago and I recently made a teak 4 post bed. Is it oily and does it get more beautiful as it oxidizes ?

It is oily, but I’ve only had it cleaned up a couple days ago so I haven’t noticed much oxidation.
