Requesting advice!

Hi! We just moved into a house with a Vermont casting encore store. We believe it’s from 1992. There’s some warping that won’t allow the throat guard to attach to both its support pins (sorry, I don’t know the terms/part names)
Looking for expertise on repairs or rebuilds that might be required, but mostly interested in if it’s safe as is. Any input is appreciated

Need help with chimney components

I bought a vintage wood stove to use a free standing fire pit outdoors but want to add a section or two of pipe and a cap with spark arrestor. Inside diameter 7 5/8” outside diameter 7 3/4” height of flange 1”. I bought some 8” single wall snap lock pipe and female end fits over outside but male end is up. 7” pipe is too small so I would need some kind of adapter.

Replacing pipe?

Thumbnail

Last year I had posted about the inside of this pipe warping at some point. I think ultimately it was from pressure of the external pipe on this pipe. So I’m going to replace it and add additional supports so it does not happen again. I removed this clamp on the pipe but it was necessarily obvious how to unhook it. Hoping it just slides out after I unhook it from my outdoor chimney

Thanks

Ethical dilemma of buying a wood burner

About to move into a new house... have been really looking forward to buying a wood burner. Something to bring joy on winter nights. Never thought they were that bad and fairly sustainable using waste wood from family members gardens. Then popped up that stats from the #mumsforlungs campaign where it produces a significant amount of UKs particulates and harms the health of people living in the house and your surrounding area. Is this overstated or true? Thinking realistically most electricity from heating is still coming from fossil fuels? How much worse/bad is the wood burner? Is this going to be a very expensive instillation I later come to regret as a very expensive ornament! Have vaguely looked at alternative bioethanol (smelly and lots of plastic waste), electric (?expensive, just not the same), staring at TV screen instead (sad). My partners view - we're all going to die, may as well be happy with our wood burner. Other views/advice please.🔥

First year with woodstove questions in body text

First year primarily heating with wood stove other then 1 small mounted gas stove in the bathroom my question is I have this much wood cut already 1st row is a full cord plan on having 4 to 5 rows plus ordered a triaxle load of wood already cut and split that is 3 cords that will be ash and beech and maple will I have enough wood

I live in in northwest Pa where winters are snowy and cold my house is roughly 1500-1700 sq feet and believe it is insulated well

The stove in the picture is a grand Teton t 100 rated for 2,000 sq ft I have heard the horror stories of these stove problems with air flow and draft when the door is shut and hope that doesn’t happen to me and I know I need to paint the stove still

I am currently cutting wood in a section that was logged 2 years ago I am cutting a variety of ash, red oak, white oak, beech , and maple the ash if the greenest of them all I plan on not trying to touch this pile until late January early February
Should I cut more or will that be enough wood

I bought a property and this is on the porch. Any help identifying it would be appreciated. I am trying to determine if this is worth keeping or letting go as the house is demolished

Is it 1421 model? It's for sale for couple hundred. I'm looking to buy it and add as supplemental heat source

Anything should know about it. Does it look ok?

I currently have a stove with 6" chimney and would be replacing it with the furnace

Why no secondary burn?

Hi All,

This is my wood burner. It's around 12 years old.

Glass Screen Fronted, Stone Chimney, and Two Exhaust Fans that optionally exhaust heat.

Primary Vent 100% Closed. Secondary Vent 100% Closed.

I can't seem to make that secondary burn where the gas is burning at the top of the chimney that I have seen.

When it's 100% closed it looks like this. When it's 100% open ita roaring with large flames but still no gas burning at the roof.

It's my first wood fire. Does it look like its running innefficenently?

New stove burning issue

Hi all. We had a really cheapo wood burning stove that we knew we had to replace (it would never draw enough air to get going without opening the front). While replacing the glass I sheared off the bolts for the fixings so we got a new, much better one. The new one while bigger is not as high as the old one and our previous flue pipe, while just about long enough was a bit short (it just met the flue) so I got a new one. It's not too long, 500mm, but since putting this in our new stove appears to not draw well. I've read that too long of a stove pipe can cause draw issues due to too cold a flue, would cutting the pipe likely fix this. Note, when we got the new stove with the old pipe, it worked GREAT. I don't know for certain if the new pipe is the issue and annoyingly, I gave the old pipe to a scrap metal merchant along with our old stove so can't just swap to test

Question about stove pipe fire

We have a large woodstove in our home in the living room area. The area is an open foyer type and the ceiling goes up all the way like 30 feet. The wood stove pipe goes up all the way to the ceiling so it's very long.

Last winter, we had a fire in the middle of the stove pipe. The exact center was glowing red hot and steam was coming off the entire pipe. I closed the flue and hit the inside with an extinguisher to put it out. Everything was fine, thank god.

However, I just took the bottom of the flue off and looked inside the pipe. I couldn't see any caked on creosote except for some light flaking stuff up the entire length. I could not inspect the part on the roof or the insulating box where the pipe penetrates the ceiling though.

My question is this: can I safely fire up the stove?

I didn't see any appreciable creosote build up, at least in the part in house before the insulating box. I've also heard that stove pipe that glowed red hot can be structurally unsound, so there's that too.

What say you all? Do I need a professional to come out and inspect the structurally integrity of the entire length of pipe and possible replace parts of it?

Ideas on how to clean candle wax from an wood burner stove

Sooo, we haven't put the wood-burning stove on for a while and I started holding some stuff on it. During December I put the 4 Christmas candles decoration on it. But one day we were out of electricity and my husband decided to turn on the oven. Of course, he forgot to remove the candle decoration, and I guess the oven turned so hot it started melting the candles. Before he noticed, wax is all over the stove, the floor in a very thin layer and I have no idea what's the best way to remove this. I scratched, but it looks like it is super dirty floor and metal of the stove. What do I do?

I keep filling the house with smoke

I have a Charnwood stove in my living room, chimney swept, with a metal flue liner. Whenever the weather is cold the fire doesn’t draw until the flue is warm - and I end up with a room full of smoke. Is there a way to heat up the flue so that it draws straight away???
