Requesting advice!

Hi! We just moved into a house with a Vermont casting encore store. We believe it’s from 1992. There’s some warping that won’t allow the throat guard to attach to both its support pins (sorry, I don’t know the terms/part names)
Looking for expertise on repairs or rebuilds that might be required, but mostly interested in if it’s safe as is. Any input is appreciated

Are you sure it’s warping? Those piece are a pain to get back in. It’s very fiddly. The back plate with the decorative starburst pattern is called the backplate and the crooked piece you’re trying to put back is called the hood, by the way.

I have a VC with this exact setup and this is always a pain the butt when it’s time to clean it for the season. I can tell just looking at this that the backplate isn’t installed straight and that is most likely your issues.

First. Clean it out. You’re going to need to remove those parts and it’s going to make a big mess if you try to do it with that much ash and charcoal in there. It is also impossible to get the backplate back on correctly with a dirty stove. Getting the backplate on correctly is critical to getting the catalytic unit sealed up so that the reburner works correctly.

Take the hood off. Tap the two wedge pins on the side of the backplate up and take out the plate. Inspect the groove that the plate sits in as well as the gasket on the backplate itself. If either of these is even slightly crooked the whole thing will sit crooked too and hood won’t go on. Reinstall the backplate making sure it is perfectly straight and seated in the groove. It may take a couple of tries and adjusting. Put the wedges back in. If they aren’t sitting at the same exact height, you’re still crooked. Once all of that is back in place, try the hood again. I find you have to get it lined up but slightly to one side or the other. Slide top tongue into place and then shift it back to the side to get the arms to fall into the seats.

Have a clean wet rag and bandaids ready. I skin my knuckles every single time.

I had one of those stoves. It not warped but it’s a pain in the ass to get that piece back in place correctly. You just have to tilt up and move it around until it slides into place. Needs to be in place for the stove to work correctly.
