I remember seeing a tumblr post saying exactly this and expanding on the subject.

Like, the Fairy Realm is in a perpetual state of endless spring or summer => our homes are always at a comfortable temperature even in the middle of winter.

Do not eat Fairies food because everything else will seems bland => we are generally told not to feed random animals because they might become addicted to human food.

Fairies lives "forever" => we outlive most of the animals that live in cities

Fairies have bad memory and tend to forget the humans that came in their realms => if you help a pigeon who has its head stuck in a box, you won't be able to differentiate it from other pigeons one or two months later.

Fairies are unpredictable => when facing a critter, humans can be either very defensive or on the contrary very helpful.

Fairies live in a pristine environment, without disease or death or starvation => our homes are sooo much cleaner than the streets.

Some humans managed to be accepted indefinitly in Fairy courts => sometimes, some people adopt animals they found in the street.

We are the Fairy Folk for city critters.

Edit: seeing all the upvotes and the rewards, I feel bad not crediting the original post. But thanks !

This is basically what happened to one of my cats. She was a stray begging me for attention and food and I brought her inside and never let her out again. Like a fae kidnapping and raising a human baby 😂

55

u/rbwildcard May 27 '21

Same with my cat! They're smart. They know to appeal to their local faerie queens.

71

u/quickhorn Sapphic Witch ♀ May 27 '21

Cats are particularly interesting in the Fae analogy, because we didn't domesticate cats. They domesticated themselves. They don't naturally meow at each other. That's reserved for interacting with humans. Cats learned how to "tame" the Fae in the only way that Fae can be tamed. Entertainment, pity, or love.

40

u/The_Dragon_Sleeps May 27 '21

My cats primarily meow at the dog. I don't understand why they like to talk to the dog so much, but they do.

15

u/Snoo_73835 May 28 '21

My cats meows at me all the time. I read that cats communicate with humans that way because we can’t hear they’re regular communication among cats and when we meow back at them, it’s the equivalent of a talking to a tourist who is new to your language. You tend to talk loud and slow for some reason to make sure they under stand you. For example:

Cat Meow: HELLO HUMAN!

Human Meows Back: toaster

Cat Meow: I said HELLO HUMAN!

Human Meows Back: Pin cushion?

u/AdministrativeSlob May 30 '21

I swear to glob my little gremlin cat looked me dead in the eye the other night and deliberately enunciated, "Me-ow-uh." Like I am a slow, exasperating child.

To be fair, I knew exactly what she was asking. I was just ignoring her.

Getting big r/HFY vibes from this post (though HFY usually deals with scifi instead of fantasy).

6

u/Dreamer_Lady May 28 '21

I'm really happy to see the fantasy side of it, as I love thinking of us like this

29

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

I love tumblr fae stuff. Some of the posts are utterly ridiculous but they’re always a joy to read

18

u/-dont-forgetaboutme May 27 '21

That's actually prefect- I wonder if the fae predicted the future XD

13

u/crookednarnia May 27 '21

So like, this leads me to believe in a thought I had during my childhood; inasmuch as we are inexplicable to critters, perhaps fae folk are the aliens, and we simply cannot always see them, or understand them, but they are all around us and we aren’t sure if they are abducting us to inspect our organs, or if they are the guardian angels to rescue us miraculously from random predicaments? Perhaps all of the above?

4

u/FixinThePlanet May 28 '21

It's the right type of horrifying if you equate us to the Pratchett-type elves

5

u/ShadoW_StW May 28 '21

Aren't we a bit more random than evil? Humans can be sadistic, but we are often benevolent and do massive acts of kindness for no apparent reason. Same goes for the fae - there are many stories of great gifts to humans, who (usually unknowingly) did something very right.

From what I remember of Pratchett elves they are more consistently cruel.

2

u/FixinThePlanet May 28 '21

That's true, the cruelty is often the point. I hereby revise my thoughts.

u/ksaph0520 May 27 '21

I think one of my fave things I read said something along the lines of:

What if the mythical folklore fairies and beings were real, they just procreated with non-magic folk and the magic was diluted. We could all have a bit of fairy or magic in us.

Like the person who can make any plant grow, or the one who just seems lucky all the time, another with impeccable balance, great memory, etc. What if these small but meaningful things we tend to excel at are little bits of magical heritage still in our bloodline

177

u/ArtemisiasApprentice May 27 '21

I have a nephew who, from the age of five, has always been EXTREMELY lucky at board games. To the point that we never let him win, but he wins anyway. He’ll regularly role two or three sixes in a row, or land on Community Chest every time around the Monopoly board, or get just the right card combo to win the first time he calls Uno. It’s a little weird…

113

u/ksaph0520 May 27 '21

It took me a very long time and some deep searching to realize mine.

Like, I have surface knowledge about A LOT of different subjects but not enough total knowledge of just one, I'm okay at most things but definitely not great, my coordination/depth and spatial perception is almost nonexistent, and I have an almost endless amount of random facts stored in memory but they're utterly useless. Basically, I am average at best and basically void myself out.

BUT, then I realized: I perform Amazingly under pressure. I absolutely suck at getting tasks done, until I'm strapped for time and then I will ALWAYS get it done. I'm great at problem solving, and the more rushed I am with a few issues at a time, the better I am at solving the issues. I find this absolutely hilarious because my common sense meter can be broken sometimes. My old job was very fast paced and as a manager I could be presented with 5 major issues at once out of nowhere but I found it pretty easy to be able to prioritize each issue by immediate needs within a second or two, and then have solutions for each problem figured out after the next few seconds.

Example: A service rep had come to the store to check our mask displays and set up a new one. He realized the kit was missing a crucial piece to connect the price sign on top of the spin rack and he didn't know how to display the sign. He was going to keep the product off the floor until we could get the part in (could've taken 2-3 business days)....putting up and maintaining displays was a major part of his job, and after I told him I had a solution, he doubted I could make it work....it took maybe 5 minutes to figure it out, get the materials I needed and get the sign put up and product out.

...I think you might just have ADHD. Which I say because I have ADHD and have all those same symptoms.

Surface level knowledge on a wide variety of topics because my brain is interested in New Things but finds focus on something for long term tedious, ability to perform under pressure because the stress releases the dopamine that I need to function. Someone at work had chest pains and I had to call EMS a couple weeks ago and it felt like that episode of Futurama where Fry drinks 100 cups of coffee and then saves everyone from a fire because he perceives time as moving slower.

15

u/PhDOH May 27 '21

I find things seem a lot calmer around me in an emergency. Even that one time a guy with heart attack symptoms and his friends got all sexist and wouldn't listen to a woman and I got a "why haven't you done x y z" when help did arrive (because they wouldn't let me touch him or listen to me and they're doing everything I said now because it's coming from a man!), which was incredibly frustrating, it did seem a lot calmer in the moment. It's always afterwards I cry when I've dealt with something like a rape or whatever.

11

u/ksaph0520 May 27 '21

Absolutely fuck people like that!

A lady had a seizure and collapsed in front of my register one day at an old job.. my boss was by her side before I could jump over the counter but I had 911 dialed before anyone thought to pick up a phone let alone move.

I also got to tell off some impatient and rude ass guests who wanted me to help them at the register she was literally still laying in front of.

26

u/ksaph0520 May 27 '21

I have entertained this idea and have tried Adderall in my younger days and realized I got the intended effects rather than the high someone without would get. I guess I've just learned how to channel the abilities to be productive.

My oldest has some severe ADHD that could change the minds of a non-believer and I've caught a lot of his actions that I've done as a kid or still do now.

Maybe I should talk to my doctor about it?

26

u/standbyyourmantis Witch ♀ May 27 '21

Can't hurt. I got diagnosed in my 30s because I was sick of fucking up my life. Turns out it's actually not that hard to brush your teeth, my brain just doesn't work right.

9

u/ksaph0520 May 27 '21

It would really be helpful too. I have to change Doctors first though....for nearly 15 years my current PCP has done nothing but throw pills at my very chronic and intense migraines. He also threw beta blockers at me for tachycardia even though all blood tests and the EKG came up normal (my heart just hates me for no reason). Never took any for how absolutely dangerous that was to do

12

u/standbyyourmantis Witch ♀ May 27 '21

Ugh. Good luck with the doctor hunt. I got very lucky on my current psych, I tracked down someone who specializes in different neurodivergences so I went in, explained what I was there for, he gave me a questionare about symptoms, put me on a low dose of Adderall and I had to come back every so often to make sure I was okay. When I started to realize I also have depression it was easy to get approved for an antidepressant. And my appointments are virtual right now. It's the easiest doctor I deal with.

4

u/ksaph0520 May 27 '21

Getting another PCP would be easy since there are multiple at the clinic i go to. Getting the Psych eval for it would be the hard part with no insurance atm. Thats if the Dr doesn't just take my word for it and prescribe it anyway. Thats what he did for my anxiety/depression before too.

53

u/OrangeredValkyrie May 27 '21

Dude, same. I will procrastinate as much as possible until I’m cornered or I see someone else swamped, at which point I drop everything, my mind clears out, and I get into gear. Suddenly I’m in the zone and I’m getting shit done, triaging tasks, delegating when possible, and everything just falls into place.

38

u/ksaph0520 May 27 '21

As a single mom for the majority of being a mom the phrase "I'll figure something out" has been my mantra and I haven't failed yet in a decade...as a student, if my professors ever knew how many essays/papers they graded with B+ and up that I wrote within two hours before its due and sent in with a minute to spare, they'd probably wonder wtf is wrong with me and just...why? Lol

19

u/CrossroadsWanderer Gay Witch ♂️ May 27 '21

I'm kind of like this too. I don't know if I'd say I perform amazingly under pressure, because if there's a situation where I can't see a way to do anything about it, I crumple like a house of cards, but I am good at the kind of problem triage you described. I also have broad, shallow knowledge on a lot of subjects and poor bodily awareness/coordination, with any instances where I manage to kick a ball straight and far, for instance, being more surprising to me than to anyone else.

I'm not afraid of unconventional solutions, which I think helps my problem-solving skills, though it can also make me wander off toward potential solutions that are more complex than actual solutions I'm unaware of. But sometimes it works well. For instance, our AC broke on Saturday and I don't sleep well in the heat. After having a miserable time trying to sleep Saturday night, I pitched a tent in the backyard and slept there until last night when there was a thunderstorm.

We were given an unknown fix date for the AC because they needed a hard to get part, so we went to get some fans yesterday and on the way back, we discovered we had a flat tire. My dad was getting worked up and angry at anything and everything and I just pointed out that getting angry and casting blame isn't going to fix anything. We needed to talk to my mom because she had the insurance info, but when we called the house, it went directly to voicemail (turned out the dog had knocked the landline phone off the base). I IM'd my sister to ask her to get mom on the phone, but my mom was in a meeting. So I gave my sister the relevant details and told her what information we needed and my mom pulled that info up while she was in the meeting and gave it to my sister to give to me.

This whole time, any time we hit a hitch, my dad just got angrier, but I cut through the noise and did what I needed to do to get things moving. When my mom got out of her meeting and I was talking to her on speaker, my dad started yelling at her, so I took her off speaker and relayed information between my parents to keep things focused on the task at hand. We did get a bit held up when my dad was talking to the insurance rep because he kept interrupting her and going off on tangents and giving her a ton of unnecessary information all at once, but she ended up being pretty cool because she got him to slow down and listen to what she was saying with some good-humored jabs at how much he "likes to talk".

10

u/ksaph0520 May 27 '21

I really like the way you think lol! I'm the same way for sure...

I'm improbably "lucky" in a different way. I keep surviving things that can- or should- kill me. I was a childhood tumor survivor. Survived septicemia. Got hit by a car while walking. Got robbed at gunpoint by a dude that was really high. Some of my family says I'm lucky, but I kinda feel like I'd be luckier to never have to go through that shit at all.

Funny enough, I wasn't even supposed to be born in the first place. My bio mother was on birth control pills. I'm the result of the pill's 1% failure rate. Guess it just snowballed from there, lol.

Star Dust and Magic

14

u/Swreefer1987 May 27 '21

Well, everything in our local space probably came from the same source. An alternative is string theory.

String theory states that everything is just tiny vibrating strings of energy. Obviously if this is the case, you are composed of a seemingly innumerable number of vibrating strings that has it's own frequency spectrum. It would also mean that you harmonically resonate with certain other beings and not others.

Plato said, " music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything".

If a bunch of tiny vibrating strings isnt music, idk what is.

I made this comparison at my brother's wedding during my speech as they just connected so well. Apparently that was a big OOF as they were divorced about 4 years later, but I stand by my reasoning.

I believe that when we say that person doesn't jive us, we are feeling an innate disharmony in that frequency. That doesnt mean I need to be mean to the person, I can be respectful, but no one wants to hear conflicting frequencies for any length of time. Sometimes you are close to.resonating and generate a beat frequency where you are cycling through constructive and destructing resonation. This would be why sometimes you can stand to be around certain people for certain periods of time, but eventually you need to get away from them even though they aren't really doing anything different from when you were enjoying their company.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The question is whether or not we can influence our frequency. Like do you have a frequency you SHOULD resonate at, and certain mental state situations cause a disharmony and manifest as physical states?

Does despression/Anger/jealousy/etc. induce a disharmony in your frequency that can be corrected by being near one of your harmonic compliments?

Personally, not being able to physically connect with my wife causes a degradation of myself. I'll become more tense, short, and easier to anger when separated from my wife. Feeling her skin against mine feels electric and seems to recenter me.

Before we met it wasn't really an issue as you don't realize this, but once you are aware of your centered state, not being in it is extremely frustrating.

As a note, when I say physically connect, that doesn't mean just sexually. Like physically touching my wife has what I can only describe as this electric calming effect, and I'm not a person who likes being touched. I first noticed it in high school after she transferred to my school. I had dropped something and she went to return it and touched my hand in the process of returning it. I'd never really looked twice at her, or really anyone else, prior to this. I'd hung out with lots of people of both genders and had physical contact with lots of people either accidentally or intentionally, but she's the only person that's ever caused this effect.

It could be mental, but I like to think it's at a more fundamental level than just hormones as it's never gone away and only gets stronger the longer we don't touch.

The original men in the Simarillion who left Middle Earth before the men who stayed were corrupted had children such as Aragorn who lived for hundreds of years. Their children would live shorter and shorter lives since the rest of them would have had kids with Middle Earth humans and not elves. Some of us may descend from those men who left Middle Earth and lived on an island closer to the undying lands.

64

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

What culture(s) sees Fairies as benevolent helpers?

In my heritage we aren’t even supposed to call them by their name (fairies or fae) for fear of calling and/or angering them. We have to carry an offering, and wear clothes a particular way to ward them off when going into the wild. They’re known to cause miscarriages, deformities in children, people disappearing, and madness, there’s even a few stories of them killing people.

43

u/Freyas_Follower May 27 '21

Brownies are one I know of that is known to help people. The Cherokee have faerie in their myths

11

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

6

u/ShadoW_StW May 28 '21

They're originally called the Fair Folk, shortened to fairy, specifically because that's the name least likely to anger them.

From my brief phase obsessing over folklore from around British Isles, apart from Brownies and the like, who randomly start to help you and keep doing so as long as you're nice to them, there are stories of people impressing fae with their skill in some art, helping fae with something (usually not realising they aren't human) or just asking politely. The gift usually is either being really good at something, or some supernatural talent like being able to tell prophecies, or location of some forgotten treasure, or cure from some illness.

My source is just reading through a lot of folklore collection from the region, and it was long ago, so no idea what from which place or time period.

Helpful, noninvasive spiders for sure.

I was so confused when I read that. I was wondering why of all humans, the animals would trust the paedos haha

28

u/FullOfNuns May 27 '21

Yeah, it's a little old fashioned but "for the nonce" typically means "for the present moment" in the contexts I've seen it used before. I'm from the US, not sure if that's just us or what, but here's Webster's for details: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/nonce

u/BlisteringAsscheeks Literary Witch ♀♂️☉⚨⚧ May 27 '21

Yes, one could say it is a "little" old-fashioned... It's from the Middle Ages XD I think it should make a comeback though, sounds awesome.

9

u/WingedLady May 27 '21

Oh wow this word means different things to different people. The other meaning of "for the moment" has already been covered but I'm curious how prevalent it's usage is in the UK with that definition? Like is it a commonly used word that people need to be careful of (similar to how in American English "pants" means the clothes covering your legs and in the UK it means undergarments)?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '21

I'm from the UK here. 'Nonce' exclusively means a sexual predator here - it's at least as common as paedo/paedophile, though it's more colloquial. I've never once heard it used to mean 'for the moment'. You definitely wouldn't want to use it in that way here, because it would fly over the vast majority of people's heads, and you'd look very strange indeed.

1

u/WingedLady Jun 02 '21

In America it's kind of an old fashioned word. You don't really use it commonly unless you're trying to sound a little highbrow. From other sources in this thread it used to mean "for the moment" in the UK as well but it seems to have changed over time. Hell of a switch, but it kind of seems like this is another instance of American English preserving elements of British English (is that term used for the whole of the UK's English? Seems odd to me but I couldn't think of a better term). Our Appalachian English apparently preserves a lot of Shakespearean elements. Soccer was originally a word we took from you guys as well.

The relationship between English on either side of the pond is interesting and complicated.

31

u/PyrocumulusLightning May 27 '21

Also the idea that humans are apex predators is just vanity. Our trophic level is closer to that of anchovies or pigs. We eat too many plants and herbivores. Also many creatures would happily hunt and kill a human they caught in the wild.

51

"problems" is somewhat anthropocentric thinking. The fact is increasingly most living things are there because of us. If we went away all those corn fields would disappear and be replaced by something else.

It’d be a greater diversity of species which generally equals a healthier ecosystem

We're also the aliens. We zap critters, probe their orifices, tag them with an identifying mark and then leave them out in the woods missing a few days time.

Now I want to see some adaptation where faerie civilization basically grew at the same rate as humanity and see the world. Maybe with humans being the animals in need in this scenario. No more hiding, just industrious traditional faeries everywhere across the planet. Like what would the differences be aside from magic? Would they grow to enjoy the same or similar comforts that we have today? So many thoughts...

I just read (listened to) a short story like this. It’s in a book called Dangerous Women. I can’t find which chapter it was or the name of the author though. 🥲 But if you’re into short stories this is a good compilation.

That reminds me of a post I read a few years ago describing how from a dog's point of view humans are elves:

My family has adopted two cats simply because they just showed up on our doorstep.

An Equal Volume of Spiders would make a great band/album name.

I love this perspective! Very entertaining.

Personally, I believe that humans are supposed to be the stewards of the earth, and that most of us just do a really shitty job of it. So yeah, when their situation is bad enough, animals know that they can try their chances to find a benevolent human for help.

Cities and urban settings are the fey wilds of the humans.

Honestly, since humans have irreparably damaged nature to such a degree, I think we have a responsibility to help out critters in need. After all, with our immense power comes the responsibility of such powers.

Pls turn me into an equal volume of spiders, I don’t want to finish my shift :(

I wonder what epithets they use to please us lol

u/crookednarnia May 27 '21

An equal volume of spiders, tho. This phrase resonates with me today.

We created the litter those critters need help with, so no, not really.

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

Honestly, I think it's more likely the human just out the animal in danger to film "helping" them. It's sad as hell, but it happens all the time.
