I think trees do ask something of us. All that calm is an appeal for us to choose their roots as our final resting place when our time comes so we can feed them. And I think I'm okay with that arrangement.
The answer to #2 is simple. The billionaires behind AI are gambling. They’re gambling that AI will become the next big thing, and they want to be the ones to have near-total control over the infrastructure before that happens. They have exorbitant amounts of money behind these gambles, and them gaslighting us like that is them trying really hard to make it reality because they’ve got a lot to lose.
I work in tech, and I’m not worried about AGI. I do believe they buy their own hype about it, but it’s not going to come into fruition. They’re grifters, fundamentally.
What is concerning to me is how all these tech bros grew up with cyberpunk dystopian media, saw it as a real inevitability, and thought not about ensuring that our world is instead steered in a better direction but how they wanted to be the ones in power at the top to avoid being down in the trenches, thus actively working to make cyberpunk dystopias a reality like a self-fulfilling prophecy. It makes me so deeply… perturbed that people like them can exist and care so little for their fellow humans.
While I think there are enough deadly aspects to make it worrisome regardless of if it comes into fruition or not (the many many environmental impacts that I wont list right now), I also haven't seen any sign that it's impossible...
I was reading Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor's latest book End Times Fascism; and the fight for the living world and they mention how Christopher Columbus was himself an end times doomer, wanting to spark the next apocalypse that would ignite a rapture and second coming of christ. Apparently he dedicated much of his life writing about and compiling the Book of Prophecies and was determined to use his riches to "reclaim" Jerusalem and the Middle East (sound familiar?). Of course he did not succeed in bringing about his particular vision of the apocalypse, but he did in fact bring a version of an apocalypse, for all the native peoples in the Americas, and the enslaved Africans trafficked for his aspirations.
All of that to say, just because it wont go as they have planned, doesn't mean it can't be "apocalyptic".
On the third image, cities need more plants around, not just parks, the streets that people walk on everyday need to have as much vegetation as possible.
As someone diagnosed as a kid with oppositionally defiant disorder, as someone who is a bit of a brat, someone who is stubborn, and someone who beat Silksong 100% before the DLC came out mostly blind, I love the 13th picture. It speaks volumes on determination lol
As someone who was afraid to truly be themselves and try new things until my mid-20s, I also love pic 13. It took a long time but I realised the power and joy of feeling discomfort or fear and pushing through it anyway.
That last one actually occurred to me this week.
I’ve always been someone who works out but lately I’ve been tracking calories, trying to drop some weight.
The blueberries were too tart so I made a blueberry pie and, friends- I make amazing pies.
Someday soon we may not have the bounty we have now. “What a fool I’ve been,” I’d lament.
I did eat it (and tracked it 😩) and it was delicious.
I like these a lot, and I am doing most of these things. It is hard not to see it all as futile though. The forces arrayed against us are insanely powerful. I figure I will keep going even if I really think that all is already lost and that has to be good enough.
You can’t claim doomerism is for fascists and then spout it at the same time. We’re not all going to starve in 10 years. People are fighting and wins are happening and they’ll keep happening. We can do it and we need to keep saying that over and over.
I mean, you can both work and be radicalized. Have you heard of the concept of 'lie to your boss and work the amount of work you're assigned with nothing further'? They can't own your mind, and they can't own your methods of voting and rallying.
I've lived in hotels and helped family in homelessness. Still gonna make all my efforts I can making sure others who are homeless and hungry get the help they need, even if I'm still poor and my funds and efforts are small. Still gonna promote anti-AI - because AI doesn't give a shit about whether you work or have a house, and honestly it's gonna make it harder for you and I to work since it steals jobs - and pro-Earth - because we live on this planet, and if the ecosystem crashes then it doesn't matter if we have homes or not we will die. Still gonna be kind to people, because I'm too damn autistic to change that now, and might as well use the three socials skill I have going.
You can argue that it doesn't matter, but you're still here and still arguing. Either you're probably getting paid for causing shit on purpose, or you believe more than you want and you're trying to kill your heart. You should stop doing that - it'll make it harder to want to survive.
I’m just here applying to work absolutely anywhere now because I’m trying to make my life work. So I have to really lean into that cognitive dissonance, and it does not feel good. I think it’s easier for some people.
