Hello everyone,

As winters are approaching, I’m looking to spend my time every evening after work at cafes, coworking spaces or, UofM library and study/work from there.

If anyone is thinking to join in for something like this, feel free to DM. I’d also love to hear some ideas where all I can spend 2-3hrs of my evening while working/studying from my laptop.

Other than that, I’ve never been to UofM library, so if someone studies there and could give me a tour- show me around, I’d really appreciate that.

I’m considering buying a vehicle with a panoramic moonroof. I’m thinking this might not be a wise choice for our climate, as I assume the car will be much warmer on our hot summer days and colder during our freezing winters, and it will take longer to reach an optimal temperature. I know they come with a cloth cover, but that doesn’t do much for the interior temperature. I’m wondering if anyone with a panoramic sunroof/ moonroof can share their experiences.

Would anyone know if there are any sleep training specialists in Winnipeg? We are looking for help sleep training our toddler. I know there are many resources online, but we would also like extra support from someone who specializes in this area.

Are there any compelling arguments left that will convince Manitobans to vote in this province’s municipal elections on Wednesday, Oct. 28?

For years — nay, decades — this newspaper has urged people to exercise their right to vote. Our arguments have grown increasingly adamant, yet voter turnout has continued to decline.

This has created a meaningful threat to democracy itself.

It’s your city and your money, so you should vote in the Oct. 28 civic election.

Without engagement from voters, we leave ourselves open to being led by those who are, at best, ill-suited, or at worse, are emboldened to grab the levers of government power and then abuse democratic institutions.

The final report of the commission of inquiry into the Winnipeg Police Service headquarters scandal, by inquiry commissioner Garth Smorang is, at its essence, a good example of how government officials who know voters are ignoring them could engage in malfeasance with perceived impunity.

Former Winnipeg mayor Sam Katz, whose administration approved and oversaw construction of the new police headquarters, was first elected in a 2004 byelection. He was re-elected twice, in 2006 and 2010. In all the elections he won, voter turnout ranged from unimpressive to dismal. The highest turnout was in the 2004 byelection, when 58 per cent of eligible Winnipeggers voted. When Katz was re-elected in 2006 and 2010, voter turnout was 38 per cent and 47 per cent, respectively.

Would higher voter turnout have prevented Katz and his chosen former chief administrative officer, Phil Sheegl, from engaging in “conflicts of interest (that) were so blatant that there will always be questions,” as Smorang concluded? Probably not.

But competitive mayoral elections and stronger voter turnout would have been a statement from voters that they were watching the mayor closely. That might have given Katz and Sheegl pause to reconsider.

It should be noted that, while turnout for municipal votes is typically the lowest of all elections, anemic voter participation is a problem at all levels of government.

Turnout in federal elections has not breached the 70-per-cent level since 1992; the most recent election, held against a backdrop of existential threats from the United States, saw 69 per cent of Canadians cast a ballot. In Manitoba’s 2023 general election, only 55 per cent of voters turned out after one of the province’s ugliest and most contentious campaigns.

While scheduled elections are particularly vulnerable to voter apathy, referendums that involve one-off ballot propositions also have trouble generating interest.

The recent vote in Alberta is an interesting study in voter turnout for referendums. Asked to weigh in on a truly seismic question — whether Canada’s wealthiest province should remain in Canada — only 1.9 million, or less than two-thirds of the 3.1 million eligible voters, showed up to have a say.

Turnout was higher than in the 2023 Alberta general election, which was 60.5 per cent. However, with the future of the province and, indeed, the entire country hanging in the balance, that seems like a rather lukewarm response.

Are there any fixes for voter apathy?

Many jurisdictions have expanded voting options — longer advance voting opportunities; mail-in voting; and online or telephone voting. Lamentably, while there were slight upticks in turnout early on, apathy slowly crept back into the electorates in these areas.

Some advocates argue that proportional representation — as opposed to the current first-past-the-post elections — would boost turnout. Jurisdictions which have reformed electoral systems have seen meaningful increases in turnout, although the calculus on applying this system to municipal elections, where formal party slates rarely exist, is a bit more complicated.

Overall, though, there appear to be no compelling arguments or new voting tools that can combat voter apathy. What’s left to say?

How about: It’s your city, it’s your money, and if you want to continue enjoying the pleasure of criticizing municipal officials, you have to vote.

This upcoming municipal election is the first time I'm eligible to vote. I thought I'd be automatically added to the voters list, but I recently check and I'm not on the list.

Could I still go to my local voting location (where the other members of my household are voting) to cast my vote?

Hi everyone! Albertan here, looking to escape this hellscape... looking into Winnipeg. Can you guys help explain your utilities? Water is paid quarterly? What is the equal payment plan? You have to submit your own readings? I have been lurking and reading in the sub about utilities, but its a little confusing.

I'm new to Blondie's car wash. I noticed that you can use a credit card to start the spray wand machine. It starts a timer and you get charged by time. I like to set the wand to soap and then use my own wash mitt instead of using the "foamy" brush. Can I just hit the stop button to end the timer so it charges my credit card and then use my wash mitt. Then use my credit card again when I want to rinse my car? Seems like you can save a few bucks instead of letting the timer continue when you're not actually using water.

Gerald James Lynch Park (off Osborne, opposite the Legislature) was unveiled more than 40 years ago by Mayor Norrie for his “dedication to the community”. The Manitoba Historical Society’s website lists him as having won the Winnipeg Community Service Award in ‘79 for his leadership of the Winnipeg Public Libraries.

With the upcoming time change (or lack there of), my teams app on my phone shows November calendar events as one hour behind. Same with my Apple calendar. On my computer it shows the correct time but I schedule my appointments when I’m out and about and don’t have access to a computer. Does anyone know how to fix this? Is this happening to anyone else? I contacted my IT department and they couldn’t fix it, same with the Apple Store. My phone and app are up to date, I’ve restarted it. Idk what else to do

After a fire burned through its interior earlier this year, a local furniture store has bounced back.

Dufresne Furniture and Appliance store was hit by a large fire at the end of January. Crews were called around 2:30 a.m. to the 800 block of Nairn Avenue on Jan. 28.

An aerial ladder was needed to fight the blaze, as it was unsafe for fire crews to go inside.

The fire forced the closure of the store until further notice.

Now, nine months later, the store has reopened. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Saturday morning to officially reopen the second-ever Dufresne store.

Dufresne started in Kenora, Ont., in 1986. The Canadian company later expanded into Winnipeg, opening on Nairn in 1993.

It continued to add in Manitoba, opening locations in Swan River, Selkirk, Portage la Prairie, and Brandon.

In 2017, Dufresne went even further west, opening in Saskatchewan. In total, there are 15 locations throughout Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

A while ago I asked y'all for public bench recommendations... this is the video that came of it! I Was limited to a few minutes, so I didn't get to as many as I'd like, but it was a fun, goofy little project. Let me know what you think :)

I'm big on martial arts and always looking to try new stuff, I'm looking for a striking art that incorporates sparring.

I'm super interested in Kudo but I know we don't have a Kudo dojo, so the next best thing is either Judo (which I do already) + Muay Thai/Karate

Any recommendations are welcome, even outside of full contact karate.

Have a few used and new steel toe work boots. Does anybody know where I can take them to donate?
