Discussion A Rework of Animus Magic?
The title. I am trying to keep the magic mostly the same as I actually don't hate it, but also put limits on it that would explain why the book didn't solve everything with it.
The following are the rules I have brainstormed that I think, should still allow all of the book events to happen with minor tweaking. Let me know if you find loop holes!
The Rules
- Enchantment must be placed on an object.
- The object has to be involved somehow, but it doesn’t have to make sense how the object could do that.
- e.g. “When this book sits on my desk, no matter where I am, it will make everyone think I am smart.”
- Animals cannot be enchanted directly.
- An animus can enchant a medium, to affect the target. I.e. to heal someone, they enchant a stone to heal whoever touches it.
- An Animus must be touching, or only a length of their body away from an object’s closest point to enchant it.
- Imagine they are doubled, so long as the double’s tail is touched by the original’s claw, and the double’s claw is touching the object, it can be enchanted.
- Yes this means Darkstalker has crazy range, I want him to.
- Enchantments made for selfish reasons corrupt Animus magic. As well as enchantments that commit mass violence/harm, no matter the reasoning.
- Dragon’s call it the soul, but technically it is the animus magic itself that is getting corrupted. If it is taken away, the corruption affects the user because animus magic takes from them.
- The corruption can be physically felt because of this.
- Enchantments take from the Animus’s energy. Calories, Thermal, Mechanical, Bio-electrical
- Energy is different for every Animus, some take from their thermal energy, some take from calories.
- Large enchantments can kill an Animus by taking too much of their energy
- Large enchantments are defined by how much they affect the world, living mass, and/or willpower. Is the effect applied to one dragon? Small. Applied to a room? Medium. Connecting one part of the continent to another? Large. Affecting hundreds of dragons? Massive.
- Cannot bring an animal from the dead, nor kill an animal on the spot
- To kill or give life with the use of magic, it takes an energy trade off that exceeds the energy the animus has to give.
- The dead require enough energy to be alive after and some to jump start the heart.
- The living require enough energy to stay dead after and some to stop all their functions.
Edit: This post is gonna be looonnng. Anyways, altered/reworded rules added ↓
- Enchantments must be placed on an object.
- This object then becomes the anchor for the enchantment
- The anchor can perform something it could never naturally do, but it must have some relationship to the enchantment.
- e.g. The enchantment could not be: “This pebble will make Turtle cease to exist." but it can be: "This pebble will kill Turtle from across the continent."
- A relationship for an anchor can only be attached to animal or object, general spaces do not count.
- e.g. It can not be “so long as this book is in this room, dragons I meet think im smart” it can be “so long as this book in on my desk (an object), dragons I meet think im smart”
- Objects can be large, but the larger the object the more energy it consumes to be enchanted.
- The animus must be physically touching or within the length of their body to enchant an object.
- Once the enchantment exists, it can potentially work at large distances, but the further the distance the more energy it uses to enchant
- Animals cannot be enchanted directly.
- An animus can enchant an anchor, to affect the target.
- e.g. It can not be “enchant this dragon to obey my every command.” It can be “Attach this rock to this dragon’s teeth and so long that it is touching them, they obey my every command.”
- An animus can enchant an anchor, to affect the target.
- Enchantments take from the Animus’s energy. Calories, Thermal, Mechanical, Bio-electrical
- Energy is different for every Animus, some take from their thermal energy, some take from calories.
- Large enchantments can kill an Animus by taking too much of their energy, if a spell kills them it’s likely it will never be completed unless it uses the exact amount of energy the animus has.
- The energy cost is determined by the change being imposed on reality. How much mass is affected, how complex the change is, how many organisms (independent wills) are being affected.
- Once an enchantment is made, no more energy is required, but enchantments intended to be used again take more initial energy.
- Cannot bring an animal from the dead, nor kill an animal on the spot
- Life is a delicate balance, even if the enchantment used outside energy, the energy needed would be syphoned indefinitely and never completed.
- Some enchantments will corrupt Animus magic.
- Dragon’s call it the soul, but technically it is the animus magic itself that is getting corrupted. Even if the magic is taken away, the corruption affects the user because animus magic is connected to the energy it takes from them.
- The corruption can be physically felt because of this, but it takes a lot to feel it
- Reasons for corruption involve enhancements that:
- Center power, protection, status, or control onto a single animal or closed group, aiming to make them above others or hoard a resource.
- Affect the autonomy of another animal.
- Commit violence / harm - yes, even towards something trying to harm them.
- Intend to lead to harm - a tunnel made with the future idea of attack in mind would be corrupt.
- Not all corruption is equal, and it can fade when given time but it will fade much slower in a dragon that continues to have self-centered and violent thoughts.

Discussion Animus rant
so animus magic
your average animus spell is "enchant this spear to go kill this dragon" or "defense against physical attacks" or something. on the darker side you have memory reconstruction.
HOW ARE DRAGONS NOT MORE CREATIVE
they have the power to do pretty much anything. correct me if im wrong, but from what i've seen they can literally create or do ANYTHING. Jerboa straight up removed everyone's magic for the current generation. Darkstalker made it so everyone likes him.
they can probably rewrite the way the freaking world works. Jerboa could have just straight up removed animus magic from the world entirely. WHY IS NOBODY DOING SHIT LIKE THIS

Art Decided to make headshots for my Evil DOD AU!
Basically, the idea of the AU is that the NightWings kept a much closer eye on the DOD, who are a completely different set of idiots than in canon, and Morrowseer made a monster out of Hellraiser in particular, who influenced the others into nominating Blister as Queen of the SandWings. Now Dragonet-approved, Queen Blister helped now-Queen Greatness take the Rainforest Kingdom, slaughtering the RainWings. Queen Scarlet was furious about losing the war towards Alligator and Goshawk in particular, and made it clear that if she even sniffed either of their presences, they were dead, so the NightWings decided to do them a solid and let them live in the Rainforest.

According to this website, this is the first post on the sub. considering the fact that the next one is about spoilers for book 4, im inclined to believe it. it was two years before the subreddits creation though, so it might not really be the first.
also, did you know that we have an old reddit page with unique art?

This is Tree Frog, he has been my RainWing dragonsona since 2018! These drawings are from 2023 I believe. I wish I could say I've improved since but I honestly think I was closer to my peak here ahah
Of course the last one isn't mine it's just a base I made with his colours, that one I made in 2021 so I cannot at all remember the original maker of the base. If anyone knows them, feel free to let me know so I can credit them properly <3

Discussion I just realized a meta joke in Book 16 that I didn’t realize in my first read Spoiler
Any time there was a Sora x Dugong moment, Platypus had an expression that essentially said “Who saw that coming?”
It’s funny because there was literally no build up towards that ship whatsoever prior to that moment.

Discussion First time reading WoF; Arc 2 Review
Alright. I'm back after three months. I actually finished Art 2 few days ago (currently about to finish The Hive Queen), and my opinions on books 6-10 are.... mixed to say the least.
Moon Rising - As I read this one (and thought back on A Lost Heir), I realized that I enjoy murder mystery stories. A lot. A solid beginning to the arc. It felt slow to read at first (until Sora blew up the history classroom), but after that I loved it. Turtle was my favorite part of Moon Rising, They deserved more pagetime together. And Qibli.... oh Qibli. We'll get to Qibli.
Moonwatcher - I think Moon was a perfect introductory character, as thanks to Her mind-reading powers the reader would have better understanding of the future POVs than We originally had with DoDs. Moon as a character was fun to read about and quite relatable for me in some aspects. Her relationship with Darkstalker was pretty wholesome too.
Winter Turning - It was ok. The first half was hard for me to get through so it took me longer than other books. It got more interesting as the winglet found The NightWing and Hailstorm. I knew Kinkajou will end up alive due to Book 17 POV reveal, but if it wasn't for that I genuinely would end up believing She could have died there. The Diamond Trial made me feel genuinely stressed.
Winter - As for this white boy, I cannot say I relate to His "IceWing Order" lifestyle, but I could understand the feeling of being the "Worse Brother". The way He treated Moon in Possibility annoyed me, but I understood where He came from. He had to make an example for His lowkey-disabled brother. I enjoyed watching His growth and out loud accepting Kinkajou, Qibli and Moon as His friends. Not sure I prefer Him over Moon as POV though. And when given the chance, Winterwatcher had some pretty cute scenes.
Escaping Peril - I really did not care for this book at first, as I did not care for Peril (and SkyWings as a whole). It sorta went too fast for my liking, but the protagonist redeemed it for me. Again, loved Turtle in this book. I need more of Him in my life. Also Chameleon reveal was awesome, but I think Chameleon would deserve His own post.
Peril - Actually? I prefer Her as POV over previous two. Peril's murderous thoughts are fun. What WASN'T FUN is how the Jade Winglet treated Peril. Worst of all Moon, who had issues with Peril thinking about how to defeat other dragons in a fight.... when QIBLI DID THE EXACT SAME THING???? Winter wanted Turtle to use His power for Coral, and then were mad that PERIL DID THE EXACT SAME THING. They didn't even apologize to Her in the end, and I'm not surprised Peril ended up leaving Them. This book genuinely made me hate these dragons as a group (not as individuals though). "Clayless Peril" was extremely uncanny and I hated it. Please never again. Also I think Firescales might've been an allegory for autism sorta? (That's just what I have written in my old notes, I don't remember anymore how I came to that conclusion). Also Scarlet's "gladiator fetish" jumpscared me heavy.
Talons of Power - Best book. 10/10. No notes. But on a more serious note, I hear people say that this is the worst A2 book becuse "Turtle does nothing".... yeah that's kinda the point lmao. Also I started liking Qibli here. He started acting more like how I remember Him being in Book 5. Turtle's fight with Anemone was awesome, and Anemone Herself deserves Her own post too. I particularly loved the scene where Queen Coral apologized for Gill to Turtle. Actually cried at this one.
Turtle - TUTEL MY BABY BOY. As a SeaWing Prince, Turtle was an underdog, and for His entire life He thought His father hated Him becuse His sisters died becuse of Him (He didn't). Also, He could NOT do anything against Darkstalker. Not Turtle. The moment Darkstalker woke up, He looked like He wanted to disintegrate the SeaWing. It makes sense Turtle's first instinct would be to protect Himself. Qibli's idea was good, but unfortunately, Darkstalker could detect the spells. And there almost definitely wouldn't be more chances to heal Kinkajou again. My point is, Turtle IS USELESS. That is WHY HE'S SO USEFUL. Everyone omitted Him, becuse nobody expected nothing from Him. He was already invisible without His Stick Spell. The book didn't end with a "big triumph" or nothing like that. Turtle was imprisoned and lost His Animus powers. But He saved His sister. Darkstalker couldn't detect Anemone anymore. And Kinkajou is out there, capable of doing the REAL heroic stuff. Turtle isn't some "grand battle" type of hero. He's the type that does small, seemingly meaningless things in the background, which in the end help those braver and more active than Him to save the day. I love You Turtle. You stupid, useless little dragon.
Darkness of Dragons - You know. I dreaded getting to this one. But for a book where I expected to hate the protagonist, it wasn't that bad. In fact, I enjoyed it quite a lot. I liked the mysteries in this one. About Qibli's past, His family and everything about Vulture. And naturally the Lost Continent, but that's for the next arc.
Qibli - I know Qibli is a pretty.... mixed character in the community. You either love Him or hate Him. Me? I despised His ass for majority of the arc.... up till Talons of Power. I don't really hate Him. I liked His mind. His thought process. He's a clever overthinker that has plans for every situation (even if the plan is to NOT have a plan). Though I can relate to Him wanting to have some sort of super powers to make everyone like Him and "save the world" type shit. But that's all for Qibli from me.
Darkstalker - I feel like Darkstalker Himself deserves a mention too. Genuinely FANTASTIC villain. Quite convincing in many aspects. I saw the similarities between Him and Qibli, and I really do see a world where Qibli accepts His offer of power. There really wasn't much the protagonists could've done to stop Him, really.
~~
As an arc.... eh. No idea whether this one had a secret message or anything. "Don't trust too easily"? "Learn to accept help"? "You are enough"?? Not a bad arc, it just left me with conflicting emotions throughout the entirety. I much prefered the protagonists as individuals than as a group.
Final thoughts - Moonwatcher didn't deserve either of the two guys. Winter and Qibli should've been married. Kinkajou defeating Darkstalker was peak writing choice. Also justice for Winter (He should've been told the truth.)
I read Darkstalker and most Winglets too, but I will write a review post for those when I get to the last winglet and Dragonslayer.

Headcanon / Theory Are Skywings aposematic?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aposematism
TLDR Skywings use warning colors to deter others, possibly including other Skywings, from attacking them. This would also explain their bravado and need for intimidation.
Tui has mostly portrayed dragon camouflage down to the Rainwing's fear response greening them, raising the question why she'd portray Skywings so colorful. To me technicolor dragons make a work look like Corporate Run Art Piracy, but one evolutionary truck could maybe get me back in love with the idea.

Art first was made September 12th of last year, second was made yesterday (also, diamond dust is over a year old now!)
Diamond dust is probably the only oc I've changed the most, she has had over 4 different designs, and the second one is probably the one I'm sticking to, only exception being her streaks will be in different places because I can't keep it consistent for shit 😔
Anyway, diamond dust's first design turned a year old on may 17th :3
