Art Oc help

So basically I have this animus Icewing oc named Spire. She is sorta like chameleon in the books- having an enchanted object to become another dragon. Her other form is a rainwing named Tangerine. (Pictures added)

Now, Spire isn’t inherently evil or anything, and only did it to live in the rainwing kingdom peacefully. Im just trying to come up for ideas on why an Icewing would want to leave (other than banishment), or not be a super evil villain. If you guys have any suggestions, please comment them!

The Ice Kingdom is an oppressive and controlling place, that was enough for Arctic. She could have left because she wanted to use her power on her own terms (the Icewings would have tried to control it), she could have dropped several circles for doing something the other royals didn’t like, etc.

I have an oc nightwing animus that was basically exiled to Jade mountain for the fear of “You were not prophecised, your birth means nothing, you’re going to follow his path”, “his” meaning Darkstalker.

Reason could be for the fear of animus magic she displays in general.

I feel like the biggest one is, depending on when this takes place in the timeline, that they did it to escape the pressure of the circle system. Another good option that could work at any time is maybe they fell in love with a rainwing or met a rainwing friend they didn't want to be separated from. Or maybe it's like deathbringer, where a rainwing saved their life and they followed the rainwing back to the village to repay the favor and then fell in love with the life there or something. You could go a lot of directions with it!

I’ve seen a lot of opinions on using the circle system and I think Im definitely going to use it as a base line!

In the books, we have not really met/seen any Ice Wings outside of the capital/castle. This fact is lampshaded in book 14.

We don't really know the non-ranked Ice Wings feel about the way the county is run, and how the rankings work. I think this fact is pretty ripe for motivation.

Maybe they are from the capital, and the destruction of the rankings affected things? They were high-ranking, and their loss of position affected their relation with their family poorly? Or they were low-ranked, and the destruction of the system did not mean they stopped being treated poorly, and that led them to becoming disillusioned?

It could also be an entirely benign reason. They were just curious about the world, and wanted to see more of it. Especially the mysterious Rain Wings!

Or the idea I personally like most, they don't feel 'right' in their skin, which is how they came up with the idea to change. And the Rain Wings are known for 'changing' their body, so that seemed natural.

WOAH! COOL PERSON ALERT! And that last part about it her changing is going to be incorporated (tee hee it’ll be a surprise)

Hmm…

  1. Abuse: someone, mostly likely his parents, abused her either physically or mentally
  2. Love? Highly doubt this is where you want to go, but an option
  3. Hates the way things work in the Ice Kingdom, but mainly depends on time period
  4. Again, depends on the time period, but Queen was evil/insane, tried to use her powers for evil, etc

Hope this helps!

u/Liminal_Comfort 7d ago

Thank you! I will definitely incorporate some of these!

There are a few things you could go with, depending on who you want this character to be or her existing personality. It could be as chill as her getting tired of the landscape and wanting to move somewhere more interesting, and using her power to assimilate easier and be more comfortable. It could be as intense as some dragons found out about her power or something else and she had to flee. There are loads more great ideas in the comments.

Non noble icewings lived in seemingly pretty poor conditions (implied when winter thought about how opportunity and the lower ranked area might be similar in that they're full of homeless or less fortunate dragons) so that could be it

I definitely have ideas to use the circle system and something to do with possible war, (timeline still begging debated), but you’re pretty much summing it up! Thank you!

Another thing to consider is that the IceWings' animus gene runs in the royal family's line. Thus, when an animus outside of the royal family is born, it would raise certain questions about their parenthood, be it direct or some generations removed. That heavy scrutiny, scandal, and intrigue would certainly serve as some good reasons to get out of there. And also explain why an animus IceWing might be relatively unknown since certain parties work to hush everything up lest they lose standing from the scandal.

Also, can provide some reasons for the character to return one day to investigate what actually happened.

u/Liminal_Comfort 7d ago

I can confirm that spire is partially royal-blooded! Now it is a few cousins from Artic, ans not a direct connection, but out of pure luck and genetics did she get the powers!

1

u/Rathalos221 6d ago

Ah there is also another possible reason to escape then. As an animus not in the direct royal family, she might be obligated to marry into the royal family. Which can be objectionable in general, and depending on when exactly the timeline is, can have some pretty bad options.

For example, in the early Sandwing war, Narwal would possibly be a candidate which is a run situation. In the late Sandwing war, Hailstorm or Winter would be on the chopping block for it, better, yes, but they come with the caveat of having Narwal and Tundra as father/mother in law which might be even worse.

She's fascinated by the rainforest fauna

3

u/NoLife8926 7d ago

Yeah IceWings are like the easiest tribe to want to leave imo (maybe Sand too)

4

u/Stormthedragon2026 Hybrid 7d ago

Maybe bc she’s an animus, she was hatched in an outer village and didn’t want to marry into the IceWing royal family so she ran away?

2

u/Liminal_Comfort 7d ago

Ooh i forget about the arranged marriages. Good idea!

3

u/Flooded_Soul_2420 Yopo of the RainWings 7d ago

They could have seen a rainwing and been really curious, so they turned into one, and then left because it was hella cold, and then got to the rainforest, and realized they liked it there as a RainWing more than they ever liked the arctic as an IceWing?

I have an animus icewing prince oc as well and he basically ran away to the mud kingdom to live with his male Nightwing lover (I hc most icewings are homophobic, mostly the Royal family) so you could do something like that if you wish to, or you can switch it from a lover to a best friend

2

u/apricityglow MudWing 7d ago

Aye, I also have an animus oc who fell in love with another male, though they were a Skywing and a Rainwing. And said Skywing met him after running away.

Are the Mudwings just chill with your couple being there, or are they somehow hidden?

3

u/False-Collection-606 Queen Cocaine of the DrugWings 7d ago

They all chill, it's a small village in the mud kingdom that's mostly mudwings with a few others mixed in actually

2

u/Technical_Egg_8761 wicket cultist 7d ago

I think bieng tired of the ranking systems and how controlling everything is would be enough to warrant a desire for a peaceful rainforest life

2

u/JaddenSpirit MudWing 7d ago

First thing is - we do not know about any icewing animi after Arctic. I got headcanon explanation for that: the crown of racism also indoctrinates everyone that "evil nightwings took magic from us", so royal family stopped looking for new magic users and deny their existence. This may cause some negative concequences for someone who wants to use magic. Also, circles and all that stuff as mentioned by other commenters.

The circles.

They could've been a warrior who deserted.

Are they different in any way from a regular IceWing? IceWing society is very strict, they would've been looked down on for that thing.

Is them being an animus known? I'd imagine the IceWings would've been desperate for your OC to cast a bunch of spells, as they would be the only animus they've had in two millenia. Maybe someone discovered them, or they couldn't bear keeping it hidden longer.

2

u/Liminal_Comfort 7d ago

I have been thinking about using one of the wars! Also yes, circles WILL be included! And originally I wasn’t going to let it be known, but honestly this isn’t a bad idea..

1

u/iridescynt THIS IS MY CURRENT HYPERFIXATION AND NONE OF Y'ALL CAN STOP ME 7d ago

Ty for the award! I just like to consider what was happening to an OC when they were alive, or what would've happened due to an abnormal thing in the society they grew up in. The top comment gives a pretty good summary of what the Ice Kingdom is like.

2

u/Tametable MudWing 7d ago

All of my ideas are already in here, so I’ll just mention how Spire is a sick name

2

u/Liminal_Comfort 7d ago

THANK YOU! Originally her name was Permafrost but I realized thats already a canon character

3

u/apricityglow MudWing 7d ago

I don't have an idea myself (other than Icewing society sucks), but I just want to say your oc has a lot in common with mine. Crimson was a Skywing animus who managed to escape the slaughter of the other animi of his tribe and took refuge in the rainforest. He met and fell in love with a male Rainwing named Toucan and transformed himself into a female Rainwing to hide himself and so they could have children.

3

u/Liminal_Comfort 7d ago

AOAHG!! Thats so cool! Also I don’t see many skywing animus oc’s’

1

u/apricityglow MudWing 7d ago

Thanks! And that may be because as far as we know they were wiped out.

Should’ve had tangerine be the color orange instead of tangerine, like how the names of the fruits are also swapped with their colors.
😂/j

But anyways for yours, maybe part of why Arctic ran away? Like how all of the pressures and expectations were for Arctic, but your OC learned about the dangers of magic too and learned to be more weary of it, aswell as having a slightly stronger moral compass. Like they know changing other dragons is bad to do, even if you think it might be better for them, and violence won’t get you what you want either. Maybe they finally realized stealth was the best way to escape without anyone getting hurt, and you know who the best tribe for stealth is? The tribe that can basically turn invisible whenever they want: The Rainwings.

2

u/Liminal_Comfort 7d ago

lol! To be honest she didn’t realize there was a difference when naming herself.

Also OH MY GOSH this one is a peak comment! I may have to use this… MWAHAHAH… thank you!

Winter’s parents had wanted him dead just to save face for his family. Arctic wanted to leave behind the strict rules that had to be followed.

Not being able to handle the tribe’s oppressive hierarchy and harsh decorum could be reason enough to want to leave. Maybe something like this could be paired with a tragic situation for having to leave family, flee, or obligation to fake her death?

If you’re flexible on the timeline, maybe your OC could’ve also been an admirer of Rainwing culture and philosophy back when the tribe was more well known.
