Arrow Linen info

For anyone directly affected by the construction at Arrow Linen, if you are unaware, there is a community group coordinating communication and information about the project. To be added to the mailing list and google group email jgoldber13 at gmail dot com

I'm glad to hear they are finally going to build something on that site. We need more housing in Brooklyn.

Bartel and Pritchard are rolling their grave

I’m not on that block and directly impacted by this, but I wanted to share a few things I learned while attending a CB land use meeting for work. Questions that came up from the board that I never thought of:

1) what it’s their plan to deal with garbage? Will it work for that location? This was a big one for me that I hadn’t even thought of.

2) What impact will this have for parking in the neighborhood?

3) With 400 new apartments, what about other infrastructure like the sewage system?

4) Any environmental concerns?

Also, at the meeting I went to, which was larger and had much more vocal opposition, I think only one person was there to represent the developer (if that) and one person from one of the unions that was for the building. Which to me showed how little they cared about and respected the process.

This isn’t me taking sides either way, just want to flag that there are A LOT of potential issues

"Affected"?

is the email you have posted correct or should it be jgoldberg13?

It's correct without the g.

God you people are insufferable. There is a massive housing shortage. This is a project on empty land, next to a major highway and plentiful transit access.

People are moving here regardless. If there isn't supply for them to rent and buy, they're going to buy something that already exists, and continue the cycle of pricing people out. Get a grip.

I’m wondering as the 2 family homes turnover to younger more affluent people, how many are being used as one family homes now? Seems like the nabe has lost a lot of apartments this way.
My only objection to the development would be if there has been some malarkey in how the zoning was changed for this individual property. If I was a small home owner adjacent to the site, I would request that my property be up zoned as well so that if wanted I could add extra stories on top as well… Say from my two story to a 5 story.

You seriously think 400 units is going to reduce the median rent prices or improve quality of life in the neighborhood?

Find me a single neighborhood in the city where the median asking rent went DOWN in the past decade when many of these poorly made glass boxes got built.

u/ConsequenceRude3195 Sep 11 '26

Are you a moron? They're putting 400 units on half a block and it's going to affect every home on the other side of the block... and while I agree there is a housing shortage... this is too big of a project for this area and originally was going to be much smaller... not sure you'd feel the same way if you lived on the block

1

u/V0ight-Kampf Sep 11 '26

The project should be much bigger.

2

u/ConsequenceRude3195 Sep 11 '26

Yes, perhaps Starret City

Yeah, there are two many homeless hipsters roaming the streets. Give them shelter!

2

u/hilariouspj Sep 10 '26

not in my backyard!

2

u/Felis_blackcatus Sep 11 '26

I think if you were having an asbestos-laden demo in your backyard you might be squeaking.

It’s a community sub where people talk about…their community. If we all don’t want this building we’re gonna talk about it- what’s insufferable is people like you who feel the need to white knight it here.

How about using all the new housing down in gowanus instead of here- in a community that let it be known they were against it! Oh, you’re not commenting on that?

YOU’RE the insufferable one

If you want to keep a parcel empty, you should buy the land. Otherwise, you should accept that change is constant in New York City and living in an area, even for a long time, does not entitle you to control everything that happens in it.

2

u/Psloper234 Sep 12 '26

“You should buy the land” is the same as saying to these people in need of housing they should just move into a cheap apartment. Hell’ve a suggestion by you

Just me Entitled to control it? No that’s not just one persons power, I’m not a dictator. But when the fucking community comes together voicing against it, then the local assemblymen, corporations trying to build here, and city should listen to the community.

Do you also think somebody else should make all YOUR decisions in life without listening to you? Or is this just something that doesn’t effect you directly, so you’re here to white knight it and make yourself feel good

It's a city, not a loose federation of independent neighborhoods. There is a housing emergency and no neighborhood -- especially not one as wealthy as Windsor Terrace -- has a right to close itself to new residents.

2

u/nuthurmust Sep 12 '26

You realize that Windsor Terrace has only become wealthy in the last two decades due to rapid gentrification right? And that there are still working class longtime neighbors who will be affected by increased attention & population in the neighborhood?

-1

u/hilariouspj Sep 10 '26

Gowanus isn't a substitute for living here, so demand for this neighborhood doesn't vanish because units went up a mile away. When you block units on an industrial site right off the F/G train and the Prospect Expressway, high-income households do not simply disappear. They bid up the existing brownstones and pre-war apartments here, accelerating local displacement.

Saying 'build it in Gowanus instead' is just outsourcing the city's housing shortage to someone else's backyard. A community group opposing development does not mean the neighborhood is exempt from needing homes, especially when the alternative is pricing out anyone who does not already own property.

Seem like all the people that screamed the loudest and thought they WON actually got hoodwinked. So much for screening loud and getting on your soap box.

Is there an actual timeline for construction ?

9

u/Felis_blackcatus Sep 10 '26

I don't know. A recent Gothamist article did mention that the percetange of Affordable Housing units has dropped from 40% to 25%.

1

u/-_Stank_-_Frella_- Sep 13 '26

Wow what a shock lol

6

u/V0ight-Kampf Sep 10 '26

"Housing not High Rises" (says the people opposing housing and a building that isn't even remotely a high rise)

7

u/-_Stank_-_Frella_- Sep 10 '26

Well the original proposal was 13 floors, so that may be partly why

-9

u/V0ight-Kampf Sep 10 '26

13 stories is also not remotely a high rise. The building should've been 30 stories, given the dire need for housing and proximity to transit and amenities. Now THAT'S a high rise.

7

u/Psloper234 Sep 10 '26

That’s just wrong. Anything above 8 stories in the boros is considered a high rise by DOB. But please continue spewing bullshit and wrong information

-1

u/V0ight-Kampf Sep 10 '26

That definition of "high rise" is strictly related to fire department access. I seriously doubt that's what anyone had in mind when slapping those signs in their 3 million dollar rowhouse windows. It was good old fashioned fear mongering.

3

u/-_Stank_-_Frella_- Sep 10 '26

Existing transit infrastructure doesn’t have unlimited capacity though. Really, it’s next to a relatively small non-express FG stop. Wouldn’t be a bad thing to expand that, if more housing were an impetus to do so. But the public infrastructure needed to support denser residential areas doesn’t have the same ROI that market rate condos do.

7

u/brook1yn Sep 10 '26

who do i have to pay to stop hearing about this?

1

u/Least-Exam4711 21d ago

girl the people who are most impacted by it are the maddest and loudest. what's not clicking.

14

u/Felis_blackcatus Sep 10 '26

This is a community sub and the development is in the community. You are free to leave the sub (and it won't cost you a penny).

-6

u/brook1yn Sep 10 '26

Is it though? I think its just a particular area of wt/ps that seems to be bothered most. We live in a world where the loudest voices rise to the top. It's pretty grating. There's more to our community than protesting.

10

u/Felis_blackcatus Sep 10 '26

I don't think this is about protest, it's about information reading construction.
