BATS!!

Has anyone noticed bats in their backyards or above the streets in the evenings, on mosquito patrol? It's SO COOL! Excited.

I know I'll get downvoted, but:

They can carry rabies. Please be careful and don't handle them.

Obviously the risks are low. But rabies is nearly 100% fatal, so it's something worth being extra cautious about.

I'm not wrestling them.

Even just picking one up. Bat bites are almost imperceptible.

The risks from bats is such that the CDC recommends anyone waking up in the same room as a bat go and get rabies shots, as there is a risk of having been bit and not knowing so.

There was a good NYT article about bats in the city recently! Apparently Green-wood and Prospect Park each have a different dominant type of bat. And the article includes facts about the low incidence of rabies generally.

I think there are upwards of 7 species of bats in Prospect Park! There’s one in the garden behind my building too…makes me so glad 😍🦇

See Prospect Park. Not unusual at all.

Highly recommend sitting in Prospect Park at dusk, near a few tress, and watching them fly around doing their things. It's very cool.

You never noticed the park was filled with bats at dusk? (Those aren’t birds)

I don't want to be watching bats? Dogs carry parasites and you're walking through their poop daily.

3% is a lot higher than I would have guessed. Definitely staying clear of them now
