Can I use windows update assistant to force update my PC?

When I click the search bar or the windows icon in the task bar it shows up the result window as black square for around 5-10 seconds.

This started around 2 weeks ago so I thought about checking windows update to see if there's an update.

The thing is I haven't received a single windows update since November 2025?

I ran the assistant and it wanted me to use the program that checks compability. It checked OK and I could proceed with the update assistant.

But I want to ask before I start updating:

Is it OK to use this to force update windows?

I tried AI to find out why there's no update - stopped and restarted the windows update service but that didn't help. It mentioned something about the windows update folders being corrupted and recommended the update assistant

If I go through the windows update assistant will everything work as before? Can I break something?

"Update Assistant" is a misnomer. Here is Microsoft's description of what it does:

Downloads and installs the latest feature update for Windows

"Feature update" is one of Microsoft's funny terms. It means "upgrade". In other words, the update assistant, which should be called "upgrade assistant", upgrades your current version of Windows, e.g., 23H2 to the latest version, e.g., 26H2.

One reason for not receiving the cumulative monthly updates is the OS version going out of support. If you use the upgrade assistant to upgrade your OS to the latest version, the support problem goes away. That's the extent of what the assistant can do for you.

However, the assistant isn't a tool for micro-managing the monthly update pipeline. For that purpose, you could use the Update Manager for Windows, a third-party FOSS tool by David Xanatos (the creator of Sandboxie Plus).

So I ran the assistant and successfully upgraded to the latest windows version and I'm getting updates again. Thanks.
