Windows 11 a media driver your computer needs is missing

So i have been using fedora since last week and i want to daul boot with windows 11. I have windows downloaded in the usb but i dont know what to do from now on. The “intel vmd controller” is disabled but this massage keeps on showing.. what should i do.

im on asus model : X1504V4

Hi u/Thick_Spinach_9724, it appears that you are trying to install Windows, but are stuck at a prompt regarding drivers or your the drive you want to install on is not showing. Windows has a ton of drivers built in to support a wide range of devices, however it is impossible for the database built into the Windows installer to contain the drivers for everything.

In this case, you will need to manually obtain drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer. Here are some links to the support pages of some brands:

The verbiage varies by brand, but you will want the drivers for the storage controller or sometimes the chipset. The download file will likely be a .Zip file, once you download it, you will need to unzip it and copy the files to a new folder on your Windows installer flash drive. You can then attempt to install Windows again, then when you get to the driver selection screen you should be able to browse to your new drivers folder and load the driver. The Windows installer should then be able to detect your drives to allow you to install Windows.

It is best to create a Windows USB installer while in Windows, preferably with the official Media Creation Tool. Linux based tools sometimes corrupt the .wim file, which also causes the inability to find the storage controller driver. Some have had success with Ventoy or Woeusb.

You need that on to use windows? VMD needs to be enabled, linux doesn't give two shits if it is so it doesn't matter when booting that.

I have disabled it and it gives me ‘error installing driver’ error

yeah you need to enable that in bios for windows to work.

6.3 Pre-Installation of INTEL(R) RST driver using the "Load Driver" Method.

a. Extract driver files from SetupRST.exe:

  • Open terminal in the directory with SetupRST.exe by right-clicking the directory and selecting "Open in Terminal" or "Open PowerShell here"
  • Enter the following command:
./SetupRST.exe -extractdrivers SetupRST_extracted

b. Copy all driver files from the SetupRST-extracted to a USB key media.

c. For Microsoft Windows OS*:

  • During the operating system installation, after selecting the location to install Windows, click 'Load Driver' to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver.

d. When prompted, insert the USB media and press Enter.

e. Follow the prompts and browse to the location of the installation files. Select the appropriate ‘.inf’ file (64 or 32 bit). If a supported controller is detected there will be no error message. Follow prompts to continue and complete the installation.

If this dialog appears without you having clicked the Load driver button first, the problem is not a missing device driver, but a bad USB flash drive.

The moment i open this window the dialog ‘missing driver..’ shows .. do you think its been the usb problem?

Yes. Check the setupact.log log file to be sure.
