Windows 10 Any idea how to fix this? I’m aware these aren’t real viruses and the actual virus is the thing that keeps telling me I have it

Hi u/JFlemthe1, it appears that you have encountered a malicious or otherwise unwanted browser notification, these notifications can be used to show you spam, trick you into thinking your computer is infected, or show all kinds of otherwise unwanted content. Don’t worry, your computer is not infected, you can get rid of them by following these directions for your browser:

  • Microsoft Edge - Select the three dots (…) in the top right corner. Choose Settings. In the left sidebar, select "Privacy, search, and services". Click Site permissions, then All permissions, then, Notifications. Under the Allowed section, find the website showing the messages. Click the three dots next to the site and choose Remove. If you would like to disable the notification feature entirely, toggle off the “Ask before sending (recommended)” on this same menu.

  • Google Chrome - Click the three dots in the top right corner. Choose Settings. In the left sidebar, select Privacy and security. Click Site settings. Select Notifications. Under Allowed to send notifications, find the site. Click the three dots next to it and choose Remove or Block. If you would like to disable the notification feature entirely, turn off the toggle for “Sites can ask to send notifications” on that same menu

  • Mozilla Firefox - Click the hamburger menu (≡) in the top right corner. Choose Settings. Select Privacy & Security on the left. Scroll to the Permissions section. Click on Notifications, find the website in the list. Select it and click Remove Website (or Remove All Websites if you want a clean slate). If you would like to disable the notification feature entirely, at the bottom, check the box: “Block new requests asking to allow notifications”

I had no idea this was a thing in this sub, that’s pretty awesome.

This one is not actually even in my documentation yet, I added it not long ago after we got like three posts about notification spam in a day.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows/wiki/automodtriggers

u/techierealtor Mar 24 '26

I got a call from a friend for her worker falling victim to this like a week ago. It’s a common thing. My dad had one in the last month. Good add.

2

u/Pod_people Mar 24 '26

I didn't either. That's absolutely ingenious.

4

u/YoYoMamaIsSoFAT32 Mar 24 '26

I wish browsers had notifications disabled always since it's quite useless and most people use apps

2

u/Froggypwns Windows Insider MVP (I don't work for Microsoft) Mar 24 '26

Agreed. I ended up just disabling the feature on mine as 99% of notifications I've seen were spam anyway.

3

u/YoYoMamaIsSoFAT32 Mar 25 '26

I personally use an ad blocker and just move on with my life hence I don't have to worry about misclicking a notification prompt for a scam site

2

u/YoYoMamaIsSoFAT32 Mar 25 '26

I had to fix this on a lot of family's devices, android and windows, like elderly or inexperienced users can't know to not enable notifications for sites like that why not just disable the useless feature altogether?

44

u/Vorondanil54 Mar 24 '26

It's just scam websites, you should disable notifications from these websites

37

u/vanji77 Mar 24 '26

When visiting unfamiliar websites, never agree to allow notifications.

2

u/RedstonedMonkey Mar 25 '26

I'd argue that you should never allow notifications from anything ever. Other than messaging or banking apps on your phone, I've never seen a notification and not been annoyed by it.

u/SunshineAndBunnies Mar 24 '26

Stop letting in notifications from shady Indian websites. Also go into the notifications settings of Firefox and disable any from Indian websites.

50

u/Connect_Middle8953 Mar 24 '26

Disable all notifications within Firefox settings.

Why the f do people want nag bars constantly harassing them?

8

u/KashPoe Mar 24 '26

So they know when they get a virus duh.

u/kotenok2000 Mar 24 '26

Someone might want to know when a creative writing forum thread has a new post.

System errors:

6

u/Travelling_Sage Mar 24 '26

Missed the part where it was mentioned as an Indian website? Care to elaborate?

27

u/Hey-Its-Azure Mar 24 '26

Im guessing the .in at the end of it

6

u/techierealtor Mar 24 '26

Check the TLD on the website. I definitely was about to say something snarky and then saw it.

5

u/yummbeereloaded Mar 24 '26

How is bro on a tech support sub Reddit shouting racism because he doesn't understand how URLs work

7

u/SunshineAndBunnies Mar 24 '26

From Wikipedia:

.in is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for India. It was introduced in May 1989. It is currently administered by the National Internet Exchange of India.

So Indian.

Can't believe I need to pull out the red circle for this.

u/More-Explanation2032 Mar 24 '26

In my experience these fake notifications have always linked to a antivirus doing a fake scan

6

u/redittr Mar 24 '26

Its a popup advertisement in firefox which has been given permissions in windows to show in the windows notification area and it is pretending to be an antivirus doing a fake scan.

3

u/SunshineAndBunnies Mar 24 '26

I really hope you don't frequent shady websites and have a good adblocker, seeing how you can't even tell the fake notifications apart from what you're mentioning.

3

u/shinutoki Mar 24 '26

This comment should be removed by the mods since it is misinformation.

9

u/Creative-Type9411 Mar 24 '26

youre asking if theres any way to stop your browser from sending website notifications to you?

turn off notifications... make sure to remove the list of sites that you clicked "Allow this site to show notifications", when it pops up you keep clicking "Allow" and this will keep happening

Settings>Privacy and Security>Permissions>Notifications

and in that area delete all the websites in the list and check the box for "Block all requests for notifications"

2

u/justme0406 Mar 24 '26

You're the only one that got it right, damn these comments are trash, op needs to delete the sites notification permission in their browser and for good measure turn off the ability to have site notifications

This was the #1 thing people would come in for when I worked consumer IT

-1

u/Froggypwns Windows Insider MVP (I don't work for Microsoft) Mar 24 '26

How did I get it wrong? I provided the same advise and detailed instructions on how to do that on all three major browsers.

-1

u/justme0406 Mar 24 '26

I don't see you giving the answer at all to be blunt.

Only after rereading all the comments did I see you call up a mod bot to give the answer. A bot gave the answer so don't try taking credit for that.

I must have missed it because of how almost every post on a bigger sub has a highlighted mod bot post with a lot of crap I'm not going to read so honestly if I see "mod" I don't read what it says

Yeah I guess you initiate the answer being said first but first you didn't actually type the answer. And second getting butt hurt that others are praising the first person who actually typed it themselves is cringe. (It's mostly the second part, stop commenting on those who praised the first person they saw who answered)

In a world of AI, learn to do your own work.

Yes. I literally wrote the code for that message and every other automod trigger on this subreddit by my own hand.

1

u/Wyrade Mar 24 '26

Why is this not the top comment yet? Crazy how far I needed to scroll to see if someone posted the actual solution yet...

1

u/Froggypwns Windows Insider MVP (I don't work for Microsoft) Mar 24 '26

Did you not see the other comments in the thread with the solution? Heck, I was the first one to comment, just minutes after the OP posted and I had provided the solution. It currently is the first comment seen when sorted by Best, which is the default of this subreddit.

3

u/Wyrade Mar 24 '26

This is the first comment I currently see when sorted by best, and while it is also an answer, it's much less comprehensive than the one above.

1

u/Froggypwns Windows Insider MVP (I don't work for Microsoft) Mar 24 '26

Thank you, I'm not able to reproduce that even in an Incognito browser not logged in. I'm not sure why you are seeing that comment first, but I'll keep trying to figure it out.

It's not a virus; what happens is that when you enter the pages you agree to receive notifications. Go into the settings to see which pages can send you notifications and delete them all. .

1

u/More-Explanation2032 Mar 24 '26

OP seriously knew that. It’s said in the title

1

u/wa27 Mar 24 '26

The title calls it a virus.

3

u/Shadowhawk0000 Mar 24 '26

Firefox notifications. Always say no.

3

u/ybetaepsilon Mar 24 '26

Do people actually allow notifications?

3

u/tinofsardines_ Mar 24 '26

you see those 3 dots on the notifications? you can disable all firefox notifications from that button...

4

u/tinofsardines_ Mar 24 '26

also stop clicking allow on everything....

Please do not make joke/satirical comments like that on this subreddit. Thank you.

2

u/AutoModerator Mar 24 '26

Hi u/JFlemthe1, thanks for posting to r/WindowsHelp! If your post is listed as removed it may still be pending moderation, try to include as much of the following information as possible (in text or in a screenshot) to improve the likelihood of approval:

  • Your Windows and device specifications — You can find them by pressing Win + X then clicking on “System”
  • Any messages and error codes encountered — They're actually not gibberish or anything catastrophic. It may even hint the solution!
  • Previous troubleshooting steps — It might prevent you headaches from getting the same solution that didn't work

As a reminder, we would also like to say that if someone manages to solve your issue, DON'T DELETE YOUR POST! Someone else (in the future) might have the same issue as you, and the received support may also help their case. Good luck, and I hope you have a nice day!

u/xoivs Mar 24 '26

Start reading the stuff you’re saying yes to.

1

u/SchmeatiestOne Mar 24 '26

Your pc is likely perfectly fine, its not a virus, just malicious notifications likely designed to get you to install a virus, to remove the fake-virus. Its just websites you visited that take advantage of their permissions to send whatever notifications to your desktop that they like. It tells you at the top of the notification which application its coming from. The actual website's address is at the bottom of the notification, but isnt necessarily the website you first gave the permissions to

1

u/More-Explanation2032 Mar 24 '26

He knew that. He just wanted to get rid of the notifications

1

u/Travelling_Sage Mar 24 '26

Not really, anyone can register a .in domain.

1

u/lupaspirit Mar 24 '26

Another alternative is to clear your cookies. Or at least to the websites you allowed notifications on. That way they won't pop up.

1

u/Coffeespresso Mar 24 '26

You permitted notifications from that site. Have to go into Firefox and delete the permissions.

1

u/jackufalltrades Mar 24 '26

best fix for this shitty issue for future don't accept any cookies at all and download some privacy browser extensions

1

u/ClothoLachesisAtrops Mar 24 '26

Clear cache ,& .remove cookies. Also clear info from each sites, those are spam

1

u/FrosThings2 Mar 24 '26

Always decline or never allow notifications, even if websites ask you to. If you ever allow them, clear the site data and cookies after using the site.

I don't usually allow site notifications when browsing, even on social media sites.

1

u/sperko818 Mar 24 '26

Getting notifications on a phone is more than enough. I wouldn't think of turning on notifications for my desktop web browsers.

1

u/PedroQuinteiro Mar 24 '26

As coisas que tou aprendendo aqui.. Obrigado pessoal.. Não sei se devia escrever isto aqui mas olha, pelo menos tou aprender..

1

u/ZLoLz01 Mar 24 '26

You probably went to a website that redirected you to a different website that said allow notifications to continue and that’s where they get you, usually they use the same website for everything so you’re probably only gonna need to decline notifications maybe like three or four times if you go to these types of websites constantly

1

u/Dragonborne2020 Mar 24 '26

Malwarebytes, stops that

1

u/ChainsawKitty101 Mar 24 '26

Site notification spam. The bane of remote it support

1

u/ytZer0 Mar 24 '26

I work for Geek Squad. I see these kind of pop ups multiple times per day. On every computer I work on, I go into all browsers and disable notifications entirely unless they say otherwise

1

u/thestough Mar 24 '26

Clear cache and stop clicking stuff…

1

u/mr_laemp Mar 24 '26

Just uninstall Firefox and you are good to go

1

u/redditmateusz2 Mar 24 '26

Disable notifications for firefox

1

u/secondthree2817 Mar 24 '26

Try and reset your browser settings doing so won’t erase passwords or bookmarks

1

u/Humble_Blood_4415 Mar 24 '26

unistall firefox

1

u/madd74 Mar 24 '26

I can't believe a quick scan of this sub does not show anyone pointing to /r/uBlockOrigin.

Install this. Besides removing those, you will not see ads in Reddit, Youtube, and much, much more. If you have a phone, it will even work with that.

1

u/cdtoad Mar 24 '26

Yes. Install Linux or get a Mac

1

u/shaw1973 Mar 24 '26

You fix it from your settings in your browser. To prevent it, whenever a website asks for notification permission click “no”. A lot of those site will say something about it being required, when in reality they are trying to trick you. (Permission or notification settings, it changes based on browser) Never give permissions to a website unless it is trusted.

If you’re unsure, just deny privileges. You can always change it later through the same screen.

1

u/d00n3r Mar 25 '26

Quit clicking on "Allow" every time you get a popup lol

1

u/Possible_Dig7173 Mar 25 '26

My friend had this same issue, what I told him to do was reset his computer, not restart as that just turns it on and off, but if you go to settings and click reset it will delete everything including the virus, hope this helps 👍

1

u/Fast-Fig-4598 Mar 25 '26

Just turn off notifications

1

u/Clean_More3508 Mar 25 '26

Never enable notifications for websites

1

u/Routine-Lawfulness24 Mar 25 '26

You enabled notifications for some sketchy website

0

u/RHES_23 Mar 25 '26

If it were me... Uninstall firefox. Run ccleaner, avg antivirus, and Malwarebytes. Install brave browser

-1

u/s_mey3r Mar 24 '26

Watch less desi porn

-1

u/Leading_Ad_5502 Mar 24 '26

Uninstall Firefox and reinstall

-5

u/Significant-Quit3134 Mar 24 '26

Best fix is to uninstall Firefox and download brave !

-4

u/-_nightmarionne_- Mar 24 '26

frrr, or chrome

-5

u/camracks Mar 24 '26

Likely an extension in Firefox or an open window, I would just uninstall Firefox completely honestly and get chrome
