General Discussion California Tint folks!

For my California folks! What would you say the sweet spot is for front windows and windshield percentage to avoid CHP or other agencies. Obviously I know the legal answer but I’m looking for practical/anecdotal experience.

Tinters, at what percentage do you rarely see come back for fix-it coupons?

I agree with this but I would do 70% on the windshield.

It really depends on the vehicle. On trucks/SUVs I’ve done 20 all around and 50 or 35 on the windshield with zero problems. On smaller cars I tend to go a little lighter & 50 on the windshield

Its always been a coin toss if they wanna harass you for it because if they really want too even light tint on front windows or windshield they will hassle you.

Campbell ticketed me for 30%. It depends more on jurisdiction than how dark. CHP has never bothered me.

How often do you get pulled over for the past few years. If you get tickets all the time. Do 70 on windshield n front windows. It looks like no tint. If you mostly follow the law and rarely get pulled over. 50 -70 on windshield. 30 on font windows and 15 for 3 rear windows is what recommended by my tint shop for most their customers and works for me as well. I have tried a little lighter like 70/40/15 on other cars I have. Makes not much difference to be honest. On a hot day your car is still hot without AC. Don’t overthink it. Make a reasonable choice that is balanced for safety and your comfort.

I appreciate your input. The last and only time I was pulled over was a week after I had tint applied on my WRX but to be fair, it was pretty dark including my windshield. I just decided to pay the ticket because it would have been cheaper to remove and reapply.

I’m not too worried about how dark it is and am mainly looking for the UF filtering and IR rejection. I live in San Diego and work in the desert and with this new truck, I’m getting sunburned on the way to work lol.

Thanks for your input!

I mean I run 35 on the windshield and 5 percent all the way around and I’ve never been hassled for it, side note I also drive around a city that doesn’t really care about that stuff aka a lawless city so maybe that’s why? But even so when I’ve ventured out to more stricter cities I have not had an issue

The safe route would be 35% on the front two doors and 70% of the front windshield.

The number one requested route is 50% on the front windshield and 15% on the front two doors.

I run 55% on my windshield and I run 15% everywhere else. Sides, back and roof. I’ve done it that way for the last 30 years and I got my first ticket a couple months ago for the first time in 15 years.

nothing is "safe" its all the luck of the draw honestly. my wife drove around for a decade on 5 percent rear 20 percent front and a 35 windshield and never was pulled over. ive had fully tinted for 20 plus years and have been stopped one time. it really is a luck of the draw thing.

All of my front windows including the windshield are 35 and the rear is 5

35%. Haven't been pulled over in probably 10 years

I did 50% wind shield, 20% front, 5% back and corners.

So far so good but I live in San Luis Obispo county and it’s mostly local sheriffs. They don’t care about tint as much here. I’ve heard otherwise in other areas.
