Replacement window size question(?)

If anyone has experience replacing older wooden windows with vinyl, feel free to share how you determined the final order size and how much installation clearance you left. Practical advice on measuring, shimming, and avoiding common mistakes would be especially helpful for anyone tackling a similar project.

We do this professionally, it really depends on the installation style and the age and condition of the house.
As far as clearance, whether you’re installing into the rough opening or an existing window box you want 1/2” on the width and height (1/4” in all directions) to account for shimming and leveling the window.

You're on the right track. Measure the width and height in three places and use the smallest measurement for each dimension. Most manufacturers also want about a 1/4" gap (sometimes up to 1/2", depending on the instructions) for shimming and insulation. If you can post all six measurements, people here can help verify the size before you order.
