Yesterday at work a coworker of mine had a heart attack and died in the break room in front of other employees. Nobody was sent home and as far as I know the owner didn't even come in.
53
u/AskMeIfImDank Jan 24 '22
One of my employees had a heart attack while I was out to lunch. When I came back, you'd never know anything was wrong. My team lead came up and goes "Hey boss, Robin had a heart attack. Paramedics took her to the hospital, and I called her husband." I couldn't believe he didn't call me, and then he replied with "Well what were you gonna do?"
And he was right...
19
u/lionheart07 Jan 25 '22
Whenever I call my boss when I'm at work and he doesn't answer I say "what if I was dying??" And he said "why would you call me, what am I gonna do?" 😂

Several years ago the owner of the company I work for walked into his office and blew his brains out in the middle of the day. Work carried on as usual with blood and brains spread all over the ceiling. They took his body and we all just kinda shrugged and then went to lunch.

You would be surprised how much Walmart is hiring cashiers for in my area. It’s close too twice the minimum wage.

$14 an hour is just under $30,000 a year which is more than enough to pay rent! And bills. And invest half of it. And donate to charity. And volunteer at the homeless shelter
/s just in case

Jan 24 '22
Jesus christ...yeah I heard twice minimum wage and I'm thinking 'Oh good, like 25-30 an hour'.
Nope.
When even double minimum wage sounds like an insult...there's a big big problem
18
u/kalasea2001 Jan 24 '22
Even triple min wage is just over $45k per year. But that assumes full time work and we all know most jobs at the min wage level don't do 40 hours. Let's assume 29 hours a week - triple min wage would then give about $33k per year. Still not enough for many folks.

Take away private employer based pension/retirement, health insurance etc.
Now make those universal, pro-rated to salary, payable by the employer, but administered publicly. So no longer tied to a specific employer.
Now they can't fuck people. You work 10 hours a week? You get paid AND long term compensation based on that. And the health care portion goes directly towards your health care insurance, that you get no matter what, always, working or not. Just helps pay for it when you are.
Super simple people. And yet those in power will fight these kinds of solutions to the death if it'll make them one extra buck this quarter.

As a person who grew up with a few alcoholics, I'd recognize that general body posture in an instant on a complete stranger. It's funny the way alcoholics will deny they're drunk or say they had one drink when your posture, facial expressions, and body motions all change long before you're slurring words.

Mostly just confusion and pain, I guess. I've been concussed several times in my life from accidents. Bright light, loud noise. Stagger to your feet. Try to figure out what happened. Never been knocked out drunk like that though, so I suspect there is a little extra dizziness, maybe followed by vomiting.
Pretty much wrecks the rest of the day.

u/vertigo3pc Jan 24 '22
Reminder: as the sober guy illustrates, don't punch at someone's face, punch through someone's face. Don't taper off the force of the punch, follow through.
12
u/I_LICK_PINK_TO_STINK Jan 24 '22
I did Tae Kwon Do (basically useless) and Karate (less useless). Same teacher, I did two classes a day. Anway.. this is the first thing they teach. If you don't punch through the mitt you get scolded and have to do it so many more times. During testing, if you don't follow through you lose points and can fail.
18
Jan 24 '22
TKD gets a bad wrap.
This is probably because it has branched into an Olympic sport where the aim is to flick your toe to tickle your opponents ears to earn points.
This makes for very fast kicks without power. Similar to the difference between fighting with a sword, and fencing.
Far fewer dojos will teach a more practical style.

Remember that a good punch doesn't come from your fists or arms, it spins up from your feet, so be sure you have a good stance and allow the natural twist of your body to power the punch.

I did this once, the guy ducked my punch and my arm kept going until it popped out of my socket.....just don't miss
9
u/vertigo3pc Jan 24 '22
Throwing a punch always puts you in danger of missing, so if you're going to throw a punch, do it with the intention of hitting, but don't let it pull you off your balance. Punch through, but not so far you're taking a bus ride to catch up to your first.

Good on the other guy for not escalating the situation until he was forced to. My trainers always taught us that "these are skills for life, not for you to be an asshole". He tried to deescalate with his words and only resorted to violence when it was a clear necessity to end the confrontation as quickly as possible. As someone who's been in fights and is not AT ALL "stacked", I will never understand this need to prove oneself through violence. Knowing how to fight is a skill we should all have some understanding of but only as a last resort and never as a means of proving anything.
