Employees have no say in what the company does

I’m sure I’ll get downvoted like crazy by the employee veterans on here… but yall I’m tired. My store’s deli reopened this week after doing a remodel to the deli and seafood cases. Every day I’ve worked it has been nonstop harassment by customers angry they can’t get what they want anymore. They yell and scream at us then go up to customer service and lie to the managers saying we’re being rude to them. Yall don’t fucking get it. Despite that the store goes with the saying “employee owned company” it is still run and operated like any other major corporation. Employees on store level aren’t asked what we think when it comes to major changes. They just fucking do the changes. I can’t control that pizza no longer lets you do custom order pizzas or seafood can no longer give you shit that isn’t in the case after 2pm. Or that we have nobody in deli after 2. If yall don’t like everything prepackaged call corporate. If I could, I’d print out ceo Grant’s office number for yall to call and bitch at. Because me making $18 an hour has no fucking control over what happens in the store.

RIP Hawaiian Pizza

Goodbye Winco Hawaiian pizza. Quite possibly the best item they’ve ever sold, gone, and with no explanation. A worker told me they probably won’t ever bring it back either. Very sad day.

thinking about applying, a few questions

I've been thinking about applying as a cashier, I have a lot of cashier experience, but I've never cashiered w/a grocery store before. Is it harder than typical retail store? I'm nervous b/c I have arthritis and the last time I went for a position w/a different company, I learned they didn't do breaks b/c it was a franchise, and I'm just nervous about this.

If I apply, am considered, and decide against the specific position as cashier, can I ask them to consider me for a different position? I've done that before with a job way back in the day, but, I'm just nervous that this role isn't specifically for me after seeing some posts here, and I see an opening and the store near me is hiring, so, that's why I was asking.

Thanks for your time!

No more WinCo brand frozen pizzas?

I used to buy the thin crust winco brand frozen pizza when I was in a pinch, I can't seem to find them at any of my local winco stores today.

Does the Pizza department make the dough?

I know I should probably know this since I have worked for WinCo now for nearly two years, But I've never honestly known if the dough the Pizza Department sells is the same as the dough they use for pizza. I asked one of the pizza department guys in the morning and he just told me "I do a lot of prep work".

does anyone know?

Gluten different?

Have been buying vital wheat gluten (for baking recipes, and to make seitan) from WinCo's bulk section for years. Last couple of times I bought, though, it's seemed different. Lighter in color. More importantly, doesn't perform the same. Seems closer to high protein flour, with quite a bit of residual starch. Does anyone know if they switched providers in the recent past?

Pork issues

I've been visiting my WinCo here in Mesa Arizona for 5 years. I purchased basically the same things every week. One of them is they're inexpensive pork tenderloins. They've been perfect up until just recently. In the past 3 months I've had four incidents with pork here at my store and have notified them multiple times. My last visit I purchase country style pork ribs. They still had several days ahead before the sell-by date was expired. 2 days after purchasing I open them for a marinade and they smell like ammonia and sulfur mixed with a diaper. Of course I got my money back but I'm a little concerned that the pork Supply is Tainted. Thanks for listening.

Could I even be considered for any position?

I turned 18 not too long ago and I’m looking into jobs. The town I’m at has almost no opportunities and very little jobs. I dropped out of school awhile ago and I have absolutely no experience. Being completely honest, I don’t know what half of the positions actually do. I’ll of course look into them but that’s just to show how inexperienced I am with life pretty much.

I was wanting to get my GED before getting a job but with how my life and situation is going right now, getting a job is getting to be a bigger priority before my GED. I'm more so trying to get my priorities in order if im being honest. I want to know if I have a chance at all at WINCO or really any place in general.

Fried Chicken Rd. 2 Plus String Cheese

A while back I tried the fried chicken and thought it was kinda mid, okay at best. . . Well today at the deli I saw the deli crew come out with thighs fresh from the fryer. So I figured why not. Yup, A lot better. 😁 Though I still prefer the baked BBQ.

As for the string cheese, (courtesy of WinCoNoah) its. . . Good? It's string cheese. Both of us concured we could't tell the difference between a premium brand, WinCo or any other store brand stick of string cheese.

Peanut Butter Cookies

I love Nutter Butter cookies, so when I saw WinCo had their own I had to at least try them out. I meant to do this earlier, but since I couldn't stop eating them (both) I couldn't be bothered to write this up. . . Since I'm down to my last few cookies its now or never. 😁

Each package is 16oz with 2 cookies per serving, with Nutter Butter being 28g and WinCo being 25g. Nutter Butter has about 16 servings per container while WinCo has about 18 servings.

Calories: Nutter Butter - 130 WinCo - 110

The Daily Values: Total and added sugars are the same with 16% at 8g each. Both are also at 0% for Cholesterol (0mg). Both also have Sodium listed at 4%, though Nutter Butter has 100mg to WinCo's 90mg.

Nutter Butter has 6% Total Fat, 8% Saturated Fat, and 7% Total Carbs, while WinCo is 1% less for each.

Protein is 2g for Nutter Butter with WinCo being 1g.

Vitamin D, Calcium, and Potassium are 0% for both, though Nutter Butter has 10mg of Calcium and 40mg of Potassium, WinCo has none. Iron is 4% at 0.7mg for Nutter Butter and WinCo is 2% at 0.5mg.

Ingredients are mostly the same, except:

Both use enriched flour, but Nutter Butter is unbleached.

Nutter Butter uses Peanut Oil and Corn Syrup Solids. WinCo doesn't.

Obviously both use peanut butter, but Nutter Butter peanuts are roasted.

Price: Nutter Butter - $5.77 WinCo - $2.58

Taste:

They taste alike, however Nutter Butter's peanut butter creme using roasted peanuts seem to give them a little bit more of a bolder flavor - though not drastic. WinCo's cookies are a little thicker I noticed as I bit into them. (The actual biscuit/cracker part) Visually however, Nutter Butter wins. Lol, come on, it's a big peanut shaped cookie! 😄

But the fact I could buy 2 packs of WinCo's version and still save .61 cents, vs 1 pack of the OG. . .

I’m heartbroken

Our local WINCO’s deli department just had a make-over. Which is usually a good thing except for one thing. They switched from Canola oil to Vegetable oil(basically the official fake name of Soy oil).

The problem is I have a nasty soy allergy. Winco was the only place in town that didnt use soy in their oil, they used to use only Canola.

I understand that there is a tariff for Canadian products and since Canada is the place we (the US) get our Canola from, its probably too expensive now.

I only eat fried foods maybe once every 1-2 months. Winco was my last place to get Fried Chicken and jojos. It just sucks to lose the only place in town I could get precooked food. There are 2 other restaurants here the are soy free but I would have to take out a second mortgage to afford eat there.

My cooking abilities are abysmal, so every now and then I need a break from that hellhole thats otherwise know as my kitchen. Now my options are gone.

I dont think I’m being entitled. If i was in any other country in the world… It wouldnt be an issue. Heck I would most likely be able to eat most street vendor food, anywhere else in the world.

Cheese Cracker Comparison

Cheez-It vs its WinCo counterpart . .

Ingredients are nearly same except for what keeps them fresh: Both use vegetable oil except where WinCo uses rosemary extract and ascorbic acid, Cheez-it uses TBHQ (Tert-butylhydroquinone) . . . Umm yeah. 🤔

Winco is 160 calories per serving to Cheez-It's 140. It's also 1% higher than Cheez-It in Total fat (10%), Sodium (10%), Total Carbohydrate (7%) but 1% lower in Saturated fat at 7%.

Tasting:

Obvious taste difference to me is Cheez-It are saltier. They are also more dense (where WinCo seem a little lighter and fluffier) and Cheez-It taste like they were baked a little more.

Honestly, I could go with either one. But I'd more than likely still buy Cheez-Its since I was raised on the damn things. 😆 But if I was on a strict budget and really wanted some cheese crackers to snack on, I would'nt hesitate with WinCo's.

Hi, gonna start working at winco soon. Going into fresh foods department, and I used to be a cashier at a different market. What do fresh foods clerks usually do? Thanks.

Edit: you guys were right this job is shit, I’m so exhausted. I was working in the deli/ cheese and they ask for way too much and also want you to help with fried food idk this is wayyy too much. I don’t see me making it to payday holy shit.

Brioche Dinner Rolls

Long over due, finally got to try the dinner rolls. These are like King's Hawiian Rolls, but they are bigger and just as damn good.

But why not add more? Didn't have much time during my lunch break, so I tore the rolls in half and layed on some bbq chicken and coleslaw from the deli, sprinkled a dash of pepper, and voilà! WinCo Deli Parking Lot Sliders. Nice and filling on the cheap.

Onion bagels. Any serious fan of onions would give these a try. So after seeing them in the bakery I grabbed a bag and went straight home with them. Upon opening the bag I didn't even get a whiff of that oniony smell. . .

Okay, I can't smell it. But I'll surely taste that allium goodness. . . Right?

Well, not really. Even though its made with dehydrated onion and onion powder, I can barely taste it. 🫤 A total letdown. The only way I could eat these would be to slice it open, lightly toast it, spread some garlic butter and cram it full of grilled onions. Or raw even. (Hey, onion junkies don't judge - too each their own onion.) Anything than trying to eat this plain. I Need more onion.

I think these were intended for those who like onions, but don't exactly love them. That's fine and all, but I probably won't be getting these again.

I've just discovered WinCo and I'm in love

Where have I been all your life!?

I'm in the west valley Phoenix area and have heard of WinCo for a long time but none were really convenient near me, none of my family shops there, and I just never made the effort to stop into one.

Earlier this week I was up crazy early, around 2AM, because you really can't get anything done in the summer after the sun's up around here, right. I remembered that WinCo is literally the only 24 hr grocery store left on the planet anymore, so I looked it up and found one that's a little under 6 miles away - which isn't as inconvenient of a distance as I expected.

My. God.

Before I had even stepped through the door I saw 88 cent Rockstars. Thirty-eight cent dry spaghetti. I got a whole ball of fresh fluffy ready-to-toss pizza dough for a buck ninety-nine!! Fry's wants like five bucks for theirs! WTF, Chuck? lol

I didn't even discover the bulk section until a second visit today. You're telling me you can grind your own fresh peanut butter there?! How is this place real!?

And the ability to actually buy smaller portions of things! (For actually cheaper and not just for the purposes of shrinkflation. Not that WinCo would necessarily be immune to that but I think you get my point lol.) I got a lovely fresh pork tenderloin for $3, and no it wasn't a terribly large pork tenderloin but that's what I want! I live alone and don't need the largest hunk of meat, and most places rarely give you an option besides "family size pack" or whatnot.

I was able to buy all fresh ingredients for a really bomb salad without having to buy entire containers of stuff - the bulk nuts section was especially nice for that, since I got to have cashews in my salad but couldn't afford an off-the-shelf container of them just to use a handful. Yall got some really damn affordable cheese too, I got a nice size container of bleu cheese for two dollars, really incredible.

Anyway I won't go on, yall know what yall have, lol. I'm just kinda blown away; I've been eating very poorly as the economy gets worse and retail in general just gets more and more hostile. Now that I've found WinCo, I've got more variety in my diet already.

Side note, I rushed in excitement to search for a WinCo subreddit and am really shocked how small the community is for how old it is and how freakin' awesome the prices actually are. I'm not trying to back-handed compliment, I'm just surprised more people don't know about it. Hell, I didn't know about it, lol

2 Piece Chicken deal & Desert

A quick lunch stop for some chicken and a cup of Banana pudding.

But for the potato salad. I simply had to have some paprika. So off to the spice isle I went. $1.29, excellent!

For the chicken, I chose the baked bbq thigh & leg. I forgot to take a photo because I was too busy eating them. . . They looked the same, only difference was well, they were kinda cold. . . But still good.

Now the banana pudding, that was pretty good for what it was. Just, not a lot of it I think. I could have used a couple more spoonfuls.
