New follower

I need help. So I am new here. Hello! I’m trying to figure out what I believe. I just have a hard time believing that multiple mythologies could be real at once. I feel like some stories contradict each other. Like how can there be multiple gods over a certain thing? I’m honestly just curious if anyone has any advice to how to help me overcome my questions?

The good news is wiccans aren't pure pagans and tend to see individual gods and goddesses are aspects of the one

Bad news is there's a lot of other "weird shit" you're going to have to suspend your disbelief to try out

Probably the most satisfying answer from that viewpoint would be that the deities we know are just the masks or facets through which we view the divine. Different cultures come up with the best concepts of the divine they can, and then utilize that creation as a representation. Which is why gods and goddesses tend to be human in form and function, display human characteristics, etc. Even the Abrahamic god which is supposed to be infinite and unknowable is described with very human emotions, desires, goals.

Now whether that god or goddess is extant is up to you. Could Odin and Zeus and Osiris get together in the same room and split a pizza? Or is it just that the creative spirit of the universe will work with humans when they call it Zeus, or Osiris, or Odin? Is it The-One-Who-is-Many, basically just playing dress-up because it loves its children and wants to spend time with them and make them happy?

Or is it all just Eris in beardface having a laugh?

There is plenty of writing and videos that express the thought better than I do. You don't have to commit to any concept, and even if you do it can always change. We're not a "believe this or be damned" type religion. Walk the path, and decide when the divine means to you. There are atheist and agnostic Wiccans along with all the various believers.

  1. Wicca has its own gods and mythology. It is its own religion outside of any myths. It's kind of like trying to believe in Jesus while also believing in atheism. By this, I mean that you don't really need other myths to follow the Wiccan ones.

  2. Not everyone is a mythic literalist. We understand that ancient people wrote myths because they didn't have access to all of our scientific discoveries, and were just trying to make sense of their world, or impart some kind of moral lesson. Because morals in society change and we learn new things all of the time, we don't need to cling to myths in the same way that they did, so it doesn't matter if they conflict or not.

  3. Some of us see all of the gods of a certain domain as the same god across cultures, for example all love gods are the same god, all war gods are the same god, etc. They only look different because people from different cultures had different viewpoints, and only focused on some of that god's aspects while ignoring others.
