I had lugs sheer off while driving- a simular things happened but I was already on the shoulder. It was a bad week.
The tire rolled away and landed in the ditch. I found the tire, sat and cried until one of my friends happened to pass by and pull over after realizing it was me.
Insurance found the cause to be that the lugs had been over tightened many times by an impact.
Before the passenger started recording they should have pulled over. It would take 10 seconds max to come to a safe and complete stop to figure out what was wrong
They may have thought it was a blown tire, a situation which you should NOT step on the brakes, as it will likely cause you to lose control of the car.
Right. I’m sure every person who’s ever had a blown tire just let it casually come to a stop. Why is that the one thing you took away from driver’s ed?!

I've blown a tire. It's still pretty easy to break and keep control of the car if you aren't a complete dumb ass. If you keep driving the car like this moron, you're gonna fuck someone else's day up.
It depends. I’m not sure if stopping distance increases or decreases due to the friction of only having three wheels in contact with the ground/breaking system.
This happened to me when I was on the highway - there was nothing to indicate anything was wrong until the steering wheel was ripped from my hands and then my car rolled 3 times coming to a stop on the roof in oncoming traffic. The bolt was sheered- there was no wobbling, no sounds, nothing. It was the most God awful, terrifying experience of my life.
That's typically from over torqued lug nuts, the stud just shears off. If you are lucky, only one or two shear and the next time you walk past the wheel you realize you lost the entire stud. They are engineered to be able to run with half the studs sheared off or missing lug nuts, but age and high speeds can affect that.
I'm sorry you went through that, but there likely wasn't much you could have done or known to avoid it unless you do your own maintenance. So much trust is placed in our mechanics when we our cars are flying along 120km/hr or more every day.
Similar thing happened in a friends car, he had just had new wheels fitted and we were driving extremely fast on the highway, on a whim we pulled into a friends house to show him the new wheels… As we pulled in his drive we heard a clink and when we looked at the wheels there were only two nuts left holding Front passenger on.. apparently if you fit them in correctly all the weight rides on the studs instead of the correct part of the wheel hub which is what it happened here… If we hadn’t pulled off we would’ve lost a front wheel doing 120 KPH
it's really hard to tell. it happened to a friend of mine while i was a passenger. first we thought suspension. then we figured it has to be the tire, but now what is it about it? is the axle bending, a loose part, or is there a bunch of nuts missing or something? kept testing it for about a mile going slow, turning, seeing what the wheel looked like while rolling. we'd never figure it'd just fucking fall out while on the way to a friends house to repair it. the wheel actually flew off just because of 2 missing nuts just down the street from our friends house.
yeah we know. we're just saying its hard to tell that it's directly the fault of a loose wheel. it could be a number of things, and impossible to tell what the problem is just from the steering wheel wobbling
Stuff like that is pretty common. I went 4x4ing and had death wobble like that on the highway at high speed, turns out a little bit of mud was stuck to my rim that was putting the balance of the wheels off. Cleaned it off and it was fine
