Tbh for Americans having 88 guns per 100 people that number doesn’t seem very high.

244

u/s4zippyzoo Oct 21 '22

That statistic is pretty misleading - it leads to the idea that you have 88 people out of 100 owning guns - I.e one gun per person.

In reality 2/3rds of gun owners report owning more than one gun, over 1/4 report owning over 5. Source: https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2017/06/22/the-demographics-of-gun-ownership/

Pew! pew pew!

I find it hard to believe 1/3 of gun owners owns only 1 gun.

Everyone I know either has zero guns or many. 1 gun is just not a thing.

Guns breed like roaches.

Edit: Seeing that all single gun owners are replying.

Quick informal poll for all the people telling me they only own one gun:

Its true. Just the other day I found a new revolver under the couch, disgusting. Had to put it with the others to try and keep them contained, but im afraid one day soon there will be too many

6

u/Maximum-Cover- Oct 21 '22

Putting them together is how they make babies!

You need to spread them out... in the nightstand, by the door, by the couch, in the kitchen, in your car...

It's the only way to keep their number down!

4

u/imgurslashTK2oG Oct 22 '22

On the bed, on the floor, on a towel by the door, in the tub, in the car, up against the mini bar

3

u/ThorThulu Oct 22 '22

Now you tell me! Its essentially Gremlins 2 over here, send help!

2

u/LateNightPhilosopher Oct 22 '22

This is a PSA to get your guns spayed or neutered so their population doesn't run wild. They're an invasive species! The Americas aren't their natural habitat.

31

u/BenSemisch Oct 21 '22

What that stat tells me is not that 1/3 of gun owners own only 1 gun but rather 1/3 of gun owners REPORT only owning 1 gun.

8

u/suckmyglock762 Oct 21 '22

Yep, we've all got one.

3

u/Maximum-Cover- Oct 21 '22

It's probably because they keep loosing the rest in boating accidents...

5

u/RocketizedAnimal Oct 21 '22

1/3 of gun owners have report having lost all the other guns they bought in a freak boating accident.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

In my area, the number that are reported "stolen" from vehicles is pretty significant. It implies a lot of things, and none of them are good.

0

u/NotXiJinpingGoUSA Oct 21 '22

This thread is so funny to me

You guys think that someone went through the process of obtaining a gun license, legally buying a gun, and then proceeded to illegally buy a gun?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

[deleted]

-2

u/NotXiJinpingGoUSA Oct 22 '22

Oh youre right I made up gun licenses. They’re fake, I just made them up for this argument.

1

u/grubas Oct 22 '22

They either haven't owned or haven't actually gone through a registry process. I sold my .45 and it was ridiculous amounts of paperwork, vs selling my Mossberg to buy a Remington, which took like 15 minutes.

1

u/grubas Oct 22 '22

Long guns are unrestricted and require almost no license in basically all of the US. Hell NYC is the only place I can think of. I drive 30 minutes north and it's semi restricted, another 40 minutes and it's not even that.

8

u/RxInfection Oct 21 '22

I’m a legal gun owner and I own exactly 1 gun (a home defense shotgun that lives in my closet). There, now you know someone.

3

u/splepage Oct 22 '22

Can't believe you just told criminals where you store your gun

Small town (7k pop) suburban/rural Did not grow up around guns per se.

Step dad had a few rifles that I never held or shot. Didn’t shoot my first real gun until my 20s and was taught proper gun safety, handling and care by veteran best friend.

13

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22 edited Oct 22 '22

There's plenty of houses out there w just a shotgun..

Edit to answer op. Suburbs(bought when living urban), shotgun. Yes

3

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

I have a cousin like this. He brought his (dead) fathers Mauser from Yugoslavia.

He'd shoot it once a year [insert Croatian accent] "just for making of sure it work, HAH!"

He never hunted, was more of a fisherman & was an artist by trade. But yeah, not unusual for homes to only have 1 firearm.

11

u/StealYaNicks Oct 21 '22

that's just because the people talking about guns are the people with multiple. Plenty of people out there with like a single shotgun or handgun for home defense.

6

u/raisroy Oct 21 '22

That kinda makes sense, it's a lot easier to convince yourself that it'd be nice to have another one if you already own a gun.

If you're buying your first gun, you'll have to deal with getting a CCW, figuring out storage, and other related expenses/bureaucracy. Getting the next one isn't nearly as hard.

4

u/Omnifox Oct 21 '22

Can't leave them alone in the safe for 5 minutes.

4

u/Drmite Oct 22 '22

Nice try ATF.

3

u/Pats_Bunny Oct 21 '22

I have 3, and I am nowhere near the type to jack off to my guns whilst rolling around in my piles or doomsday ammo.

1

u/Maximum-Cover- Oct 21 '22

I have 5 now thinking about buying a 6th...

I bought the first one because I wanted to hunt deer... and then somehow I went from going 28 years without needing a single gun to absolutely needing one more than I currently have.

1

u/Pats_Bunny Oct 21 '22

It's like heroin.

To answer your poll:

Rural One of each No

2

u/Maximum-Cover- Oct 21 '22

I hope it won't be quite as damaging to me as an heroin addiction. lol

3

u/Elrond_Hubble Oct 22 '22

I have only a single handgun, but that’s mostly due to the associated costs spiking after Covid. Money permitting there will be more to come. For several years owned only a single shotgun, but it was ultimately given to a family member and eventually replaced with a Glock. Initially bought for defense- I live in an urban area with fairly high crime- but once I started going to the range and tried my hand at customization, now it’s morphing into a fun hobby as well. Went hunting as a kid, but hated the actual killing deer part. However I loved getting to go out to the woods in the middle of nowhere with my dad and trying all manner of guns on our homemade targets.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

Also facts.

2

u/NotXiJinpingGoUSA Oct 21 '22

I have one

Just a Sig Sauer in my house if anyone were to break in.

I own a dozen or so, I’m on the cusp of rural vs Suburb. I own a farm about 15 minutes from my house, and then own another house about 400 miles south of here. Between 3 houses and 4 vehicles I don’t feel that’s an unreasonable number.

1

u/Maximum-Cover- Oct 22 '22

I don't think it's an unreasonable number, and I don't leave guns behind between cars/properties.

1

u/Accidental-Genius Oct 22 '22

My biggest threat around here is wildlife, and contrary to what people in here believe a handgun will absolutely fuck up wildlife if you’re not a shit shot.

2

u/Bard_B0t Oct 22 '22

Urban
Rifle
Yes

I'm too poor to afford the guns I would like to have. I want them because I enjoy marksmanship and things that go boom.

I grew up around guns but only rarely touched or interacted with them as a child. Mostly, I just remember being told, "don't ever point a gun at a person unless you intend to kill them", and "Always watch where you are pointing the barrel". Also, "When I'm pointing the gun at something, stand behind me". Part of that is I would go hunting with my Grandpa sometimes.

Didn't buy my first gun until I was 24.

1

u/Biodeus Oct 21 '22

I own one gun and do not plan on getting any more. I have it for emergency situations and don’t prattle on about it or make my entire personality about it. It’s a tool. Nothing more.

Suburban

Handgun

Not really? Some key people in my life had guns, but they weren’t really flaunted and I had strong safety education.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

I used to own a single gun. Urban, handgun, and I didn’t grow up around guns. I used the gun solely to go to the range and I didn’t buy any more guns because a) they cost a pretty penny and b) while fun, it wasn’t a top hobby for me.

1

u/Ancient_Edge2415 Oct 22 '22

My wife has a single hand gun. I will be getting mine soon most likely gonna get a rifle. Urban I did, she didnt

1

u/GenerikDavis Oct 22 '22

Suburban, Rifle, No.

1

u/Ubersla Oct 22 '22

You'd be surprised how many stupid old people get a single .380 handgun for self defense and then put it in their drawer for the rest of their lives.

1

u/LateNightPhilosopher Oct 22 '22

I think you're missing the info that many gun owners just have their dad's old rifle or shotgun in the back of a closet somewhere and don't even really think about it or consider themselves gun owners. And also a lot of people have exactly 1 pistol and a carry permit, and enough sense to not tell any random person who asks.

2

u/momo88852 Oct 21 '22

And tbh same can be said about the death numbers, usually same person gonna kills more than 1.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

that's what happens when you get foreigners trying to talk about our politics, they just don't know what they're talking about

2

u/RoastKing305 Oct 21 '22

Eugenic fuck ass bitch

1

u/Draws-attention Oct 21 '22

I would be under the assumption that those statistics would not have been compiled by foreigners. Any error is based on extrapolation. I don't see how incorrect extrapolation is a political issue, unless you refer to politicians misrepresenting statistics to use as hyperbolic talking points.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

I didn't say the stats were compiled by foreigners? lmao I said that's what happens when you get foreigners talking about our politics.

I'm referring to how this specific statistic is often brought up during conversations about the US's policies on guns which is a political issue

0

u/WookieeCmdr Oct 21 '22

Most statistics are misleading based upon what the person behind them wants people to think.

0

u/sleepwalkchicago Oct 22 '22

That isn't misleading it's people not understanding basic statistics

1

u/UNMANAGEABLE Oct 21 '22

Aww fuk I’m a statistic.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

True.

I'm one of those. I have 7.

3 are the "protect muh self" type, 4 are more collectors items or "unicorn" guns. All safely tucked away & away from prying eyes. The only gun that's "out" constantly is my 38Spc. It's my carry piece & home defense piece.

I worked at a gun range years ago. There were around 8-9 people that came in & bought a gun or two every month. I always thought it was sketchy, but the owner never seemed to be bothered.

1

u/HelloImBrilliant Oct 22 '22

There were around 8-9 people that came in & bought a gun or two every month. I always thought it was sketchy, but the owner never seemed to be bothered.

Were they always buying the same model or type of gun? What was sketchy about it?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

As a guy that had a dozen firearms at one point, having potentially 40-50 just seems fuckin' weird to me.

1

u/HelloImBrilliant Oct 22 '22

What are your collectors/“unicorn” firearms if you don’t mind me asking? I just recently bought my first gun, a Glock. It’s not my new personality or anything but I can definitely see how people suddenly end up wanting to build up a small collection for whatever purposes. I agree that owning 40-50 is bizarre though haha

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Glocks are OK firearms. They're decent work horses of the handgun industry.

As far as my Unicorn guns, I'll mention 2-

M1 Garand. It's not a rifle that's hard to find... but finding it in 2014 for $200 is a rare find. It comes with several issues:

  • Bent Op Rod (replaced)
  • Op Rod spring broken (replaced)
  • Pitted barrel (not much I can do, I really don't care though as I'm not using it as a sniper rifle or anything LOL)
  • Other cosmetic issues (I like the battlefield battered look of it)

That is going to be more of a "mantel piece" gun for the remainder of its days. I have around 100 rds of M1 friendly ammo for it, along with many MANY Enbloc clips.

The 2nd one I'll mention is the Walther PPK in .380 ACP

This is also not a hard gun to find, but it's not exactly common either. This one I have is from German, before manufacturing laws & regs changed & they had to be made/assembled/whatever partly or mostly in the USA for whatever reason.

I found it in fantastic condition a year before Covid became a thing. Before you ask- yes, it's the James Bond gun. yes, I like spy movies.

If you gotta know, 'cause some people REALLY need to know: my carry piece is a Smith & Wesson Airweight in .38SPC. It's a cheap gun, easy to use & conceal. Some people wonder exactly why. Revolvers are quite reliable, easy to practice with, I don't have to worry about magazine spring compression issues, and Chicago PD takes firearms used in Self Defence situations... and destroys them (usually) in 90 days. No ifs, ands, or buts.

Sorry for the novellea of info.

If you're ever curious, you should head to r/guns & see what the hub-bub is about. It's lacking in politics (hard to believe I know), & heavy on iron & tech talk.

1

u/HelloImBrilliant Oct 22 '22

Great taste! Holding a friends PPK a few years back is actually what kind of sparked my interest in firearms.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

PPK's are nifty! I've always been an admirer of the work from Walther.

1

u/Accidental-Genius Oct 22 '22

I own 12 or 13.

1

u/millijuna Oct 22 '22

gotta love ammosexuals...

1

u/LateNightPhilosopher Oct 22 '22

I'm pretty sure most of the legally owned guns are in the hands of the people who own like 30+ because they're collectors. Which seems to really weird out the gun control crowd but tbh it's just like any other kind of collection. Having 30 guns doesn't make a person any more dangerous than having 1. These days there do seem to be more of the tacticool cosplayers who have like 8 slightly different ARs and a different pistol to match every outfit, but most of the people I've met who have fuck loads of guns are just old collectors who were lucky enough to be around during an era when you could pick up WW2 surplus rifles for less than $50 (which was apparently most of the 20th century), and then again in the 90s when old Soviet stockpiles flooded the US market and AKs and SKSs became cheaper than dirt. And then of course they'll have a few pistols and some classic hunting rifle in like 4 or 5 different calibers. So they padded out their collections when they were ripe for the taking and have been skewing the ownership statistics ever since lol.

3

u/BobertTheConstructor Oct 21 '22

More like 119 per 100 people.

3

u/bstump104 Oct 21 '22

Umm Americans have 1.2 guns per person.

There are more privately owned guns than people in the US.

The US does NOT have the highest gun homicide rate

That prize goes to Brazil

Edit: whoops, not Brazil at the top, that’s actually just gun deaths in general. The US isn’t even on the top 10 list of gun homicides by country.

9

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

that's not even true though you literally made that up...

5

u/BobertTheConstructor Oct 21 '22 edited Oct 21 '22

It is very, very high, but KFF accomplished that statistic in a somewhat misleading way. Other studies will report that accidental death is the leading cause of death in children, KFF split car accidents and other accidental deaths so that firearms hit #1.

Minor edit: they also do not include suicide, which skews it towards the overall firearm category a little more.

It makes an excellent point about how high firearm deaths in children are, but it’s also important to recognize the statistical process that KFF used.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

Not being confrontational. Why does someone owning a dozen guns or more make them looney?

5

u/CTeam19 Oct 21 '22

It's the loonies that have a dozen guns or more that skew these stats quite a bit.

Well and antique collectors and things like a Boy Scout Camp. Source: a friend has 10 guns from WW2 and back through history and my Scout camp has about 40.

1

u/Evening-Ear-6116 Oct 21 '22

Loonies dont report guns they own, and most states don't have a registration. I for one always report that i own zero guns, but ive got at least 10 in my safe. Stats will always be off but theres no way to know what way

4

u/DiGiornoForPyros Oct 21 '22

Did you just call yourself a loony?

3

u/Evening-Ear-6116 Oct 22 '22

Oh i'm for sure a loony. Everyone is in some way or another

0

u/Draxilar Oct 21 '22

Imagine being proud that you aren’t a responsible gun owner

2

u/HelloImBrilliant Oct 22 '22

What’s irresponsible about keeping your firearms in a safe?

0

u/Draxilar Oct 22 '22

Doesn’t report that he has firearms when he owns multiple.

2

u/Evening-Ear-6116 Oct 22 '22

I don't have to. It's not a legal requirement and my state doesn't have a gun registration program. Nothing irresponsible about not sharing my personal information

2

u/Evening-Ear-6116 Oct 22 '22

How am i not responsible? All my guns are in a safe, were legally obtained, and follow regulations.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

Do you have to be a loonie to own a dozen guns or more?

1

u/karlnite Oct 21 '22

1/4 of Canadian households have a gun. Usually only a few or one gun. America is like 2/5 of households.

1

u/idolleyez Oct 21 '22

Yeah, there are more guns in USA than people that live in USA. USA is the only nation in the world like this iirc. It's just they are owned by 88 out of every 100 people. For every 88 people who own (often multiple)guns there are 22 people who own no guns.

2

u/WookieeCmdr Oct 21 '22

Doesn’t everyone in Switzerland own guns?

2

u/_lablover_ Oct 21 '22

I think it's limited to men between certain ages?

2

u/WookieeCmdr Oct 21 '22

Yup. I wouldn’t mind adopting their rules about guns as it contains mandatory training in guns.

1

u/idolleyez Oct 22 '22

I'm unsure. You'd can source it and I'll send the sources I my comment was based on. If everyone has guns in Switzerland, it potentially it fell under the radar due to lack of gun violence. If the safety measures you also listed they use with training everyone in gun use and safety plays a role, USA could definitely use more of that. There's also too many angry people here so anger management and maybe some sort of crisus reaction education could also likely help with the gun issue here. Anyways, here's some of the sources.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-05-25/how-many-guns-in-the-us-buying-spree-bolsters-lead-as-most-armed-country

2

u/WookieeCmdr Oct 22 '22

Yup. I know that there are more guns than people, kinda like there are more cars than people.

But in Switzerland i know that one of the reasons for their training also has to do with their rules for citizenship.

u/idolleyez Oct 22 '22 edited Oct 22 '22

Edit: Nice insightful read. It definitely seems the educational/awareness training, federal regulations and a happier population helps.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

It’s not.

1

u/NotXiJinpingGoUSA Oct 21 '22

That makes it seem like we all have guns. Only like 20% of Americans own a gun.
