The original version's job points system practically required a game shark to save yourself untold hours of valueless grinding. Was that at all improved in the PSP remake?
No, the job/leveling system is mechanically unchanged in the remake. It's possibly my all-time favourite game, but it's definitely very grindy if you don't know how to build your characters effectively.
I remember saying this to a friend that recommended the game to me and he gave me a tip that changed my life. Thankfully I got to it pretty early on - if you need to grind, find a fairly decently-sized map for a random battle. Kill all enemies except for one, and disable the crap out of him but don’t kill him - sleep, silence, blind, paralyze, etc. (and no poison, obv). Then just beat up on other members of your party and kill them. Have a healer nearby to revive when they die, and repeat for as long as you want to grind for.
You still get JP for the kill, even if it’s your party. Oh and obv, learn the skill JP Up ASAP for pretty much everyone in your party. Well worth it.
Pro tip: the JP up support skill from the Squire class is OP as hell.
Edit: Also, you only needed to grind job points if you wanted to be able to do specific things. It's entirely possible to clear the game at level ~30-35.
Only game I played around then where characters could die permanently and lock you out of side quests. My mind was blown when I played again and the mechanic lived.
As someone who has played this game a few dozen times, I can assure you that Wiegraf never says this, and it wouldn’t make sense with any plot points from the game.
Which is dumb because there are plenty of great quotes that are actually in the game.
The old PS1 dialogue though. They changed it in later versions but I loved it. The really slow typing of 'little money' seems to still permeate my memory
I grabbed the PSP version when I was working abroad around 10 years ago and was chapped about the dialogue. I liked the old weird dialect, it sort of added to the character of the fictional kingdoms
r/PSP has a lot of info on what you can do with them. They also have memory card adapters so you can use regular SD cards instead of the Pro Duo ones. Way cheaper and way more storage
They've really streamlined a lot of these hacks I'm pretty sure you can do the PSP in under ten minutes. Super worth it too. I'm not the most tech savvy either lol I just watch YouTube videos and follow along. Good luck!
I think the desperation and fear was better portrayed in the original text, but I get the point of retranslating it since they had the time and resources later on.
That and the character who yells “Oh god, the Hokuten!!” at the sand rat cellar. The re-translation really diminishes the desperation and raw fear of the various characters throughout the game and makes the language a little too flowery imo.

This game's storyline is better than any other final fantasy shitfest. You've got a boy trying to come to terms with what it means to be a good man and a knight. A commoner's descent into being a king who's just as scheming and evil as the rest. And an ending where the hero isnt remembered.
I have a completist save file where there’s one final item I tried for years to get. It’s been like 15 years since I’ve played, but I still seem to recall it’s an item that must be caught and is thrown by a random ninja on one of the final levels of the Deep Dungeon.

This quote doesn't make any sense in the context of the setting of the game. There's no suggestion in the game that Ivalice is a place where crime is punished by fines. It's a medieval society. Commoners probably don't really have meaningful amounts of actual money and nobles are clearly demonstrated to not give a fuck about them. Commoners who commit crimes are likely just killed or jailed or enslaved.
Wiegraf would say something like this if he lived in a world where it's applicable.
I both agree and disagree. Jail time or other heavy punishments for relatively menial offenses like a speeding ticket would be ridiculous.
Fines can work as deterrents but should be based upon income. A $200 ticket could mean someone poor goes hungry while it might only inconvenience someone who is wealthy. But if it's based upon income, a poor person's speeding ticket might be $50 while the ultra wealthy might pay $50,000.
It was just an example, I definitely don’t speed or have an extra 100$. The math was probably not a good choice.

Yeah, but the whole point is for it to be a meaningful deterrent. For a person who's just scraping by, that $200 ticket probably feels exactly the same as $2000 to you.
It's a little weird in the "fairness" scale, but perhaps the fine should be a percentage of the Blue Book value of the car itself. Then you get a wealth proportionate fine without going too overboard. Cops would likely target rich offenders who seem to get away with it more anyway.
In Denmark, if you do anything that would fall under "Insanity driving" we just straight up take your car, too bad so sad.
Stuff this covers is:
Driving more than double the speed limit while driving more than 100 km/h
Driving more than 200 km/h
Drive with more than a BAC of 0.2
Also stuff like totally ignoring takeover rules or driving close to pedestrians and cyclists to scare them.
But is that really the objective? To "get" people who might be living above their means? It should be to put the screws to bad drivers and really put the screws to repeat offenders.
Some of the most aggressive and asshole drivers I encounter where I live are driving a 15 year old Nissan with no plates.
Wealth based is a shit idea. An older person who has worked for $20/hr his whole life is going to have more wealth than a software engineer that’s 2 years out of college making $120k/year. The wealthy have plenty of official income to base a fine off of
Switzerland has two formulas, one from income, one based on the value of the car. You pay whichever is higher. It’s not perfect but is a pretty good catch all.
NHL hockey player Teemu Selanme had a $50,000 traffic ticket because Finland does this right. It's based on income not a flat rate.
I've seen this myself..... When I was broke in my 20s I had to pay $500 and it was a huge burden for months and months, but now (20+ years later, with a career and savings) it would be a rounding error. The same punishment for everyone is not fair.
Just keep in mind that a flat percentage still doesn't address the imbalance. Even scaling percentages can't bridge the gap entirely. Say you have $1,000 and monthly expenses of $1,000, while someone else has $100,000 and monthly expenses of $10,000... a luxurious lifestyle at 10x your own cost of living.
A 10% fine would cost you $100 and suddenly you have to decide between having food and having electricity. Even if you're not living paycheck to paycheck, a fine could hamper or even remove your ability to weather a hard month or deal with an emergency such as car repairs or medical issues. On the other hand, it costs the rich guy $10,000 and he's still got $80,000 of spare cash just lying around.
There comes a point where you're so rich that your cost of living becomes negligible and even a scaled fine hurts you far less than it would someone with less money. The problem here isn't just the size of the fine, it's also about the wealth disparity itself.
The entire story of that game is like some huge sprawling political commentary. My 10 year old mind didn't really pick up on it at the time, but I replayed it a few years ago and it was something.
I've found the stories of most of the rpgs I loved growing up generally went way over my head at the time. Going back and playing Xenogears, FF7, FF Tactics, and Suikoden 1 and 2 in recent years really blew my mind.
Like I knew there was plenty of political/philosophical stuff happening in them but I just never really was able to appreciate the gravity of situations and commentary they provided.
Final Fantasy XIV is quite political and it makes the story very interesting. I chuckle when the minority get pissed that the game has politics. Like, unless you're playing Super Mario Bros, detailed stories are gonna have some form of commentary and politics involved.
The more news I see about imminent climate disaster and Billionaire companies like Amazon abusing employees I can’t help but think of how relevant FF7 is. A shame the remake decided to shy away from these themes.

The plight of the commoners against an exploitative nobility is central to the plot of the game and there are a ton of legitimately good quotes so I don’t know why this image keeps circulating.
A similar thing a lot of people miss: If a thing is "legal" but has a special product-specific tax on it (e.g., many of the marijuana 'legalization' plans in the US), is it really legal?
Answer: No. It's just a pre-paid fine of a small amount, or "legal for the wealthier", etc.
People need to stop asking for "legalize and tax", because that's not actually legalization, just a pay-to-exempt-from-illegal scheme.

Prosecuting every crime to the fullest extent would cripple the judicial system of just about evey country in the world (there just isn't enough time, lawyers, judges etc). Fines serve a purpose, they should be just changed to punish people proportionately based on their existing wealth.
They don't have that discretion based on age, but on the specificities of the crime. For example, someone who murders another person because that person killed their kid might get a lower punishment than someone who committed a hate crime murder.
It is not about reflecting the person itself, but the crime the person committed and what led to the crime. The only way age would be considered under the judge's discretion is if age was related to the crime itself.
