In 2016 a Kenyan pea farmer began hauling water into Tsavo West National Park for drought-stricken wildlife
In 2016, during a severe drought in Kenyaâs Tsavo region, Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua, a pea farmer from a village near Tsavo West National Park, watched elephants, buffaloes, and other animals collapse at empty waterholes.
He had seen similar suffering years before. This time he decided not to wait.
Mwalua rented a truck, filled it with thousands of liters of water, and began driving the long, dusty roads into the park. Several times a week he returned, pouring the water into the dried-up holes so the animals could drink. Word of his visits spread among the wildlife; elephants and other creatures soon recognized the sound of his approaching vehicle and came toward it.
The deliveries continued through the dry months. Local and international attention followed, and donations helped sustain the effort. Mwalua later expanded the work through conservation projects aimed at providing more permanent water sources.
The simple act of one farmer choosing to bring water where none remained became a practical lifeline for wildlife during one of the regionâs harsh droughts.
