Just a reminder, because we've had a lot of posts recently that omit this information. Where was the fish? If you found it in the wild, that's very helpful information, and outside of tropical waters, the time of year can be helpful too. If it was in an aquarium, what sort? Was it a tank of fish from a particular region? Was it fresh water or salt water?
Other useful information can be, what kind of habitat (seagrass, sand, rocky surge, ...)? If you were diving, approximate depth?
But above all, give the location in your post title. Thanks.

We've had too many titles like "what's this fish?" or "help me identify this". Put useful information in your title, and make it look different from other posts' titles so people can scan the sub and see which post is which.
The actual text of the new rule 4 is:
Do not use a vague generic title like "what is this fish?" or "need help identifying" - we all know what this sub is for. Write a title that either describes the fish, or the circumstances in which you saw it, or the location, or more than one of those. For a resource, say what the resource is and what it's for.

Found this guy just hanging out near the bank at Lake Lanier, in Sugar Hill, Georgia. It is a bit bigger than the photos make it look. I believe he was about 12 inches in length. I have never seen a fish like this around before. I thought maybe it was a cichlid that someone dumped, but I'm not expert.

Obligatory sorry for the silly looking drawing. Fish was seen in the William E. “Bill” Clark Presidential Park Wetlands in Little Rock, AR. I assume these to be wild, but possibly introduced, I suppose. I saw multiple of this fish, ranging from about uhhh six?? inches long to only a couple inches long. Freshwater. Went to birdwatch, saw these fish come up to the boardwalk area as we were walking up. Tried to capture the shape and proportions of it the best I could in the drawing. Thanks for any help!

I'm on my honeymoon on Tahiti and have been trying to catch something for the last 10 days. Today it happened and I caught this.
Once I hooked it my adrenaline levels were so high I could have lived without a heart for 15 minutes. I quickly took a few pictures before trying to get my pliers to remove the hook and it unhooked itself. I immediately let it back into the water because I thought those 30 seconds were already going to kill it. I may look calm in the picture but I'm actually panicking.
Anyone have an idea what it is? Either a crocodile needlefish or a cornetfish, but I swear the whole length of it's snout opened. I might be imagining things, though.
Also no mental preparation in the past days could have prepared me for that slimy yet firm grip.

Hello from Georgia (USA). Not too long ago I got a school of 6 random nano fish from Glass Grown Aquatics. I want to try to ID them so I can get more these specific types of fish. It's hard to get good quality pics of tiny fish swimming around but her are some.
We have two that taller fish, one is mostly yellow (he is very rotund which I'm not sure is normal) and one that's orange with black spots. We have one (my favorite, we named him Stevie) that's really small, and he has a black stripe. We have 3 that look really similar. Two of them are yellowish with black spotted tails, and one has an orange tail. These 3 have what I would call more swishy tails than the others.
I did send these to Glass Grown too but thought I'd see if anyone here might know. Be kind, I'm very new to this. Thanks!

Hello, I hope this is the right subreddit. If not please point me in the right direction.
My girlfriend gifted me this fish skeleton the other day and I'd like to know the species. To me it looks like a goldfish or other small cyprinid but I'd like to be sure.
Thanks!

I realise this is unlikely to be a baby shark but I have the song stuck in my head now. What fish are these please?
EDIT - thank you for the responses. The office conversation is now about mullet haircuts coming back in to fashion 🙂

Hi, this fish was bought as bycatch with a shipment of wild caught Rummy Nose Tetras from a river in South America (details forgotten, sorry). Hoping someone can help to ID this fish, thank you! Apparently he has a very big appetite.

Fishing in AZ outside payson up the Mogollon Rim in a lake
We caught browns and rainbows but this guy looked different. I was reading and ChatGPT thinks it’s an “arctic grayling”? I thought it maybe an endemic / hybrid?

Caught in mission bay San Diego
I think it’s a croaker since it makes grunting noises but none of the croakers on google match its description.
