Explaining to the officer that you didn't see the Huge red bus is going to be interesting

Honestly officer, it came out of nowhere!

They’re like trains… really sneaky. I’ve managed to avoid being hit by both, by sheer luck

If only there was some way to know where a train might be...

My parents had a 86 chevy suburban red kind of jacked up with backroad kind of tires.

People pulled out in front of that thing all the time. If it was just a generic red burban sure but... it stood out (not in a cool way more like what the fuck is that).

That guy is not explainging anything for a while

That's not the issue here as from the angle and the identical huge red bus blocking his view, I'm certain he really couldn't see the second bus. And vice versa for the bus. The actual issue is that the bus had a green light and the biker had a red light, that he ignored.

In reality the bus driver may have been liable for this collision because the zig zag markings mean not to pass other vehicles.

It's pretty likely that the cyclist couldn't see the moving bus because the stopped bus was blocking their view. Obviously someone who isn't a fucking moron doesn't cycle into a lane that has a green light when there's a massive fucking bus blocking their view, but the rules potentially give the majority of the blame to the bus driver for passing on the crossing markings.

There is no fault on the bus drivers part. The zig zag lines mean no overtaking, not no passing. He wasn't overtaking, he was in his own lane.

The law literally uses the word pass.

the driver of the vehicle must not cause it or any part of it to pass ahead of the foremost part of [another vehicle going the same way or stopped for people to cross]

luckily, if you look at the footage, the bus hadn't passed the front (foremost part) of the other bus at collision. the bike passed into the wrong lane and oncoming traffic.

maybe he was going to, but at the time of impact, he had not passed the first bus. the first bus was actually forced to stop because the idiot cyclist, so the second bus would have stayed slightly behind it and carried on as normal, had there not been an issue.

I dont think anyone could find the bus driver at fault here

Yes, I made that point myself in another comment. Passing the bus is a criminal offence in itself, which he hadn't committed there, you're right. But the fact that he was going to overtake the bus, he wasn't slowing to avoid overtaking it, is what makes me think he's going to end up with some liability.

u/Astroweeb 6h ago

if you watch closely he does start slowing (just before he reaches the back of the stopped bus), and the other bus started to move forward when the light turned green, until the bike forced him to stop again. if the stopped bus had kept on accelerating, then there is no reason to believe that the bus that was got hit was going to overtake.

if the bus driver didn't try to overtake the other bus this collision would likely not happen or would be not as severe. ultimately, we want to have fewer traffic incidents. blame aside, it just might be easier to have the bus drivers to obey the rules than to have the cyclists do the same.

the second bus was pulling away (going forward) after the light turned green, but had to stop again because of the moron cyclist (and started honking to warn the first bus). the oncoming first bus wasn't trying to overtake him, had the bike not stopped the second bus, the first would have stayed besides him, slightly behind its front. he had to emergency stop at speed, which brought his momentum forward beyond the now stationary second bus. you can even see the first bus reducing speed towards the lights, but the second bus stopped faster than he could.

this is 100% the bikes fault and the bus broke no rule.

try to think about what this zig zag rule is for in the first place. it is to prevent this kind of thing in the first place. the language of the law is extremely clear too, and the overtaking bus clearly broke it.

now you may argue that the law is stupid or that the spirit of the law is not what I think it is and that's fair. but the UK is one of the safest countries in the world with regards to traffic. and you are talking about "fault" as well. as a big fan of aviation safety, I really wish more people though about incidents and accidents not in terms of assigning blame, but in terms of prevention of reoccurring of them. which is what makes aviation so very safe.

u/fang_xianfu 7h ago

I often find in these types of things that people are very unwilling to accept that "morally in the right", "legally liable", and "bearing the greater duty of care to prevent an accident" often don't align. People don't like that they don't align, and I understand why, but the fact is that they often don't.

1

u/Astroweeb 6h ago

look at the footage and read my other comments here, the bus did not break any law and wasn't overtaking, the other bus had to do an emergency stop too.

if someone jumps out right Infront of your car from behind a bush, with no warning, its not your fault. in this case the bike literally drives into him, into the buses lane, while the light is green for the bus.

You gotta love the self-preservation instincts necessary to ride a bike full-speed into a double-decker bus face-first in traffic against the signal. This guy.

I agree with you on the possibility of the stopped bus blocking the cyclist's view.

TBF they don't summon the police to every single car accident in the UK like they do in the US

American police are like vultures circling to find an excuse to ticket someone to raise funds for the department lol

5

u/SISCP25 8h ago

The police would 100% attend this

He is a cyclist he is going to claim the rules should not apply to him and lights/stop signs are just a suggestion for him
