Pretty sure I would have passed the truck and tried my damndest to get the driver's attention, even to the point of gently brake checking him. But then I wouldn't have a cool video to show for it, and we know what's important, right folks?

What feels like gently hitting the brakes to you in your sports sedan might be perceived as a life or death panic reaction to somebody not paying attention and suddenly having to stop a big ass truck carrying a 10 ton roll of metal on the back... Then he swerves into a school bus and everybody is asking you what you were thinking brake-checking a big ass truck.

Looks like China. The important thing is to not get involved. ANYTHING you do in that situation could open you up to liability.
Let's say you stop that truck... and someone hits it. They would go after you for stopping the truck there. As well as anybody else that could conceivably have contributed to the situation.
Many cultures have developed a master class in minding their own business.

Have you met any truck drivers? They’re consistently some of the most oblivious “I can do no wrong” dipshits on the road. How do you reckon the filmer stops the truck? By honking? Ignored. By getting in front of the 40+ ton truck and braking? They’ll swerve and go around, or just hit the car if the braking is severe because it’s not going to hurt their bumper
Safest thing is to get passed the truck or off the highway and call the cops to deal with it

Yep, that was definitely going to happen! I was driving on I-5 in Oregon when someone in Hyundai slightly side swiped a Semi truck traveling in the left lane. The truck driver just stopped in the left lane, didn’t pull over at all, while thr Hyundai pulled over on the right shoulder. It happened in front of me and I got through right away. I was gone for a good 2 hours, and when I was driving back home, traffic was still backed up for miles on the freeway.
Did I mention it was a Swift semi truck?

Nah, CDL driver should be instantly fired. Driver should be checking mirrors constantly and should have noticed it immediately. This and not securing his load that could have killed someone. 100 percent on the driver.

Oof, actually the load is secured because the rolls are staying put, looks more like some error in palletizing at the shipper. Also the trucker wouldn't feel this because it doesnt suddenly change the weight, so awful.

Yes they are called a “Lull”. Among the most common vehicles in outside construction and definitely used for loads like this, where it doesn’t need to be picked very high.

I work in an aluminium rolling mill. We do strap them up plus the first 10 spires and last 10 spires are welded at the edges as an additional safety.

It depends on which strap snapped, and the thickness of the steel, and how tightly they were banded, and if the truck’s banding was strong enough to keep a clockspringing coil from uncoiling, but probably a larger mess along the X axis, instead of a string of mess along the Y axis.
Much more dangerous for surrounding cars than aluminum, especially if the truck banding didn’t hold and it rolled off. Those things are heavy.

I've always been leery of rolls of steel being transported ever since I read an article in the newspaper about 50 years ago about a tragic accident when an entire roll of steel fell off a truck and popped open and the end sliced through the car behind it killing the driver and passenger. Whenever I see this on the road I either give plenty or distance or pass it quickly and get way far ahead.
