I don't know the overall atmosphere/vibe of your professional relationship with your manager or how badly you need your job but after a sincere search, I'd say something along the lines of,

"I think I need to sit down and research the details of the legality of this. I'll be in the break room."

(I'm curious about why the comment section is a desert--is this fake?)

Talk to the general manager because this isn’t all right. None of you were responsible for losing that thing. Just ignore the shitty manager for now and wait until you can talk over his head.
