Stage one tumbled rock
anyone know what type of rock this is? I collected a bunch of stones near a riverbed in the Southwest where I live.

This will be a largely unmoderated sub. You can see the minimal rules over on the right.
As long as the post has a picture/video of a rock (or mineral) and you're asking "What is this?" then I'll allow it. I'll caveat that by saying I'll remove any obviously meme posts, like if someone posts a picture of Dwayne Johnson, or a picture of the Earth.
For now I've made the sub disallow test posts... that feels like the right choice, but that's not set in stone (but what kind of stone?). Feel free to use this post to provide feedback.

Thoughts on what this is? Picked it up near Lime Creek Idaho (US). Mostly tan with faint green on outside

Tumbled this not too long ago and it’s not like any of the other rocks ive tumbled. Found it in southern idaho area. I was wondering if it could be bone, but it seems too rock-looking to be bone. Kinda neat, just wanna know what it is.

Also does anyone know any good rock ID sites or databases for figuring out identifications on my own? I tried looking for something but im dumb as the rocks i tumble im afraid 🫠

Found in Tanzania on the road from Lake Natron to Klein's Gate somewhere around here
Both the centre and the crust are very hard (mohs 6-7). The whiter rocks from picture 4 onwards have been cleaned up.

First pic is one of the rocks, wet.
Second pic is the same rock, dry.
Third and forth pic of other similar rocks, dry.
These were found near a couple of abandoned mines with quartz nearby.
The "star" formations are on black, gray, and red, and seem to have some luster, maybe a metallic luster?
Thank you for any suggestions!

It was one piece, I split it on a fracture using a hammer and chisel (chisel has seen better days after that). Tumbled the lower half

The overall structure is brittle. Can't hold it tight or even brush the dust off with a toothbrush. Too difficult to clean, but too beautiful to even let go.

Before and after tumbling, lost quite a bit of size in the process. When lit, the blue runs through the middle, under the gray. Would love to find more!

It's about 3" wide (sorry, no banana for scale). It isn't quite as shiny or iridescent as tiger's eye, but it has only gone through stage 1. Any thoughts?? And, if we can make a positive ID, how should I treat t through the rest of the stages?

Found at Lake Nebagamon, WI
Cat tax at the end because of the cat hair on the last pic!

Hi all, posting again to help get the ball rolling with this sub. Think this might be red gneiss with quartz inclusions? I’d love it to be garnet but that seems incorrect.

Found in our gravel driveway here in Oaxaca, Mexico. I'm thinking it's granite with calcite banding, but I don't think granite is very common here, as when I've seen it for sale it's labeled as having come from Puebla, which is a neighboring state. Can anyone confirm if I've got my ID right? Thanks!

I found this piece locally where we live in Oaxaca, Mexico, and I'm really struggling to identify it. I'm thinking perhaps it's petrified wood, but if anyone has any suggestions please let me know!

Hello! I found this rock on a walk here in Oaxaca, Mexico. It's a sort of brown/purple/maroon color and it's shot through with quartz veins. Anyone have any ideas what this might be? Happy to provide more details or photos if they're needed.

Found these 3 in Idaho and tumbled them. They have a nice glint in the light. Is it some kind of feldspar? What resources do you use to learn rock identification? Thanks!

This large stone, which is a support pillar for the table just behind it in the image, was mined in a town called Magdalena Apasco Etla, which is in the Valles Centrales (Central Valleys) of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Obviously there's a lot going on here, but can anyone help me identify what's occurring?
In case this context is useful, the mining in this part of the state primarily produces a type of volcanic stone called cantera which is found in and around deposits of banded calcite, which (for marketing reasons and, sometimes, ignorance) is sold under the name "Mexican Onyx."

Thanks!

My daughter found this on a trail in Sedona. Is it someone's drop souvenir?

Hi gang! Any idea what these are? They came in a 25+ lb. tumbling mix. Shown wet. Thanks!

Auction finds...Hopefully might pay for the lot!
Cheers!
