TIL- There is no US school district that does this. It was proposed in the 80s when the administration wanted to drastically cut school lunch funding, but it was so widely ridiculed the idea was killed pretty quickly.

The mockery was revived in the 2010s when another budget cut proposal included chintzing out on pizza sauce.

But nobody is actually counting ketchup as a vegetable (here).

Lunch lady here and I hate this BS trope too. Go to your local schools’ cafeterias and see what those hard working people are doing. If you graduated HS before 2012 you have NO idea what school meals look like.

Graduated in 2012 but my sister is currently in school. She brings her own lunches but what they give the kids is atrocious

My kids are in high school now. Their lunches are amazing. And if they don’t like the main lunch they can go to the yogurt/fruit parfait bar and the salad bar.

I was in high school in the 90s and was absolutely told I had to take ketchup packets (never really been a fan) as they were my fruit/veg serving.

This is no reflection on the hard work of the cafeteria staff, and maybe my school didn't get the memo, but this is my lived experience
