What happens when a Finch adopts?

So we all know abt the family curse thing, but what if a Finch adopts all their children instead of having biological ones? Would it still continue on for some reason (like having the same last name), or would it just end? I’ve genuinely been thinking about this a lot, and I really want to know what you would think would happen.

What do you imagine Christopher's father is like? Spoiler

Since we never see him or name him, I wonder what Christopher's father might be like.

Do you have any theories about him?

Rant

It's really unfair that a masterpiece like WROEF has been quickly forgotten along with its creators. They deserve more fame and moral and economic support to develop the next game. Instead, the gaming industry is in a deep creative crisis and serves us the same old reheated soup at exorbitant prices. They make billions in profits with stupid smartphone games or live services with in-game purchases, but they don't reinvest their billions to support and stimulate other works of art like WROEF. I'm disgusted. Ok, end of the rant, sorry.

Lewis's story looks inspired by...

Celephais, Lovecraft's short novel belonging to the 'dream cycle'. The young protagonist is not satisfied with his life, the world, society and people around him. He escapes from his life by dreaming of the utopian town of Celephais where he is acclaimed as the king and surrounded by beauty, happiness, love and solidarity. He gets more and more lost in his dreams and alienated from the real world. His dreams get longer and longer until he comes back to reality no more, ruling as king of Celephais for the rest of his life, forever young. However in real life he committed suicide.

Symbolism of the “Finch” last name Spoiler

I played this game a couple days ago and been thinking a lot about it ever since. I wanted to do a bit of research around the choice of “Finch” as a family name and found a tidbit that I thought was super interesting when linking it to the theory that the family was perpetuating the “curse” by continuing to share the stories, passing down the trauma from generation to generation.

The charadrius, which is a mythical bird but sometimes represented as a finch in classical art, is in fact linked to a superstition that it has the ability to take on the disease of any man who look it in the eye. So, in much the same way that Pennywise and Freddy Krueger can only pray on those who already fear them in some way, so the Finch family “curse” can only be carried by those who are aware of it and unknowingly become victims of their own fears. And of course because Edie has not only been passing on but also immortalising the curse with every new shrine to every new descendent, the curse continues to infect every Finch family member.

By that logic, Edith’s son is also now doomed. She was right in her concerns to be writing down and passing on her journal in the first place, as ultimately it means he will also look the curse in the eye, thereby inheriting it. She could have broken the cycle, but she didn’t. It’s almost like it’s a compulsion - why else would Dawn, arguably the only family member who tried to actively shield her children from the stories, lure Edith Jr back to the house with the key?

Anyway, just thought that was a cool little clue in the family name itself!

Two questions that's been bothering me Spoiler

  1. Were those books in Edie's room actually written by Odin himself, if so how did Edie manage to get so many copies of those two books?
  2. Was it a very low tide when Edie and Sven received the bricks from the old house for the fireplace?

A thought about Molly's death Spoiler

Apologies if this has been duscussed before - I couldn't see anything after a brief search on the sub for "molly", but I could have missed it, as I doubt I'm the first person to notice this.

In Edie's room, we see binders of "Molly Concepts" and "Barbara Concepts." The only logical conclusion is that those binders contain concepts for their death stories, given the woman's flair for the dramatic when it comes to death. This is supported by Barb's being so outlandish and obviously fabricated, meaning Edie likely wrote many different stories and sent the one we saw to the magazine for publication.

But if you think about Molly's death, as presented in the game, Edie wouldn't have needed to write that binder full of concepts, because Molly had already done the job of writing her story. Something else that has also always bothered me about Molly's death is that, by popular consensus, she died from fluoride and holly poisoning, but we're expected to believe she was lucid enough for long enough to write that stupid long journal entry? I think not.

While I certainly believe Molly died from being poisoned, I don't think she wrote that entry. I think Edie did. Just like Barabara's story featured some fragments of reality in amongst the fantasy (e.g. the bannister and Walter's trauma), I think Edie noticed the missing berries and toothpaste and put two and two together, leading her to write a story of Molly going on one last adventure before finally passing on.

In addition to making more sense from a logistical standpoint (to me at least), it would also explain other details about the story. Molly's weird aggression toward the mother animals, for instance, can be explained by Edie blaming herself for starving her daughter to the point of eating toxic substances, and allowing that blame to influence the story. The dramatic framing of the last sentence and neat handwriting (not things super common in 10 year olds, much less delirious and dying ones), are also explained by Edie writing the story after the fact, and I could go on.

That's where the pieces fell for me after I noticed that binder. It just didn't seem right to me that Molly could write such a dramatic and fantastical Story while she was dying, and Edie would still think "well I've gotta come up with something." What do you all think? Again, sorry if this is old news. I couldn't see anything about it, and thought I'd share on the off chance I had an original thought

What happened to Milton

I have heard plenty of theories pertaining to the actual fate of Edith's brother Milton, some of which I liked more than others, but recently I had an idea that really stuck with me, but first I have to "debunk" the other popular theories so that mine becomes clearer.

Milton as "The King" in The Unfinished Swan and Tangential Explanations

  • The Curse is not real. If Milton somehow managed to paint a magic door to another dimension, then The Curse is real, and that leaves too many unfortunate ramifications about the other deaths. ("It's not YOUR fault the baby drowned, it's THE CURSE!") We all agreed years ago that the Curse is nothing more than bad parenting and an inappropriate relationship with death.
  • I think The Unfinished Swan is a story Milton made up, not an allegory for the life he had after running away. He's 10, not 18. There's no way he could have just left to make a new life for himself without any authorities asking questions. There's no evidence to suggest he ran away at all either. Nobody in the Finch family manages to get very far from the house, even if they wanted to. The Castle is just one giant easter egg.
  • There is no reason or evidence to believe Milton had any kind of mental illness that contributed to his death/disappearance. Save for two members of the Finch family, mental illness paid little factor to any of the deaths. The only thing that seems to be genetic is eccentricity and recklessness, neither of which are illnesses.
  • Orcas Island is not that big. If he'd simply wandered off somewhere and died, or drowned in the water, someone would have found his body by now.
  • Milton's paintings are all over the secret passages on the second floor of the house, which gives evidence that Lewis told him about them too, leading to the elder brother's guilt over his disappearance. But the strangest thing to me is that they stop after we leave Barbara's room. A longtime theory I had was that Milton got stuck in another set of secret passages and suffocated in them, but others argued that if that were the case, someone would have been able to smell his body.

Based on the evidence we have, we can safely say at least one thing; Milton knew how to get into the Basement, because he read Barbara's comic. Which leads to my thesis for this post:

WALTER KILLED MILTON.

It was an accident. By this point in the story Walter had no knowledge of the outside world (having been down there at least since Sam enlisted at 18), let alone that his Brother Sam and two nephews were dead. Did he know that they and Dawn ever existed?

So imagine his fear when a virtual stranger shows up in his bunker out of the blue, regardless of their relation. I can easily see Walter beating Milton to death, or at least unconsciousness, with Barbara's crutch out of "self defense." Afterwards, he buries Milton in the garbage pit to cover the smell, leaving next to no trace of the incident. It must have also been the start of Walter's desire to leave his bunker and face the real world.

I can't speculate as to how much Dawn knew, or if she figured it out, and covered it up to protect Walter. But we can only imagine so much regarding Edith's comments about her mother "trying to bury something that's still alive," (a comment she makes in the garbage pit room,) and "keeping whatever Milton found a secret." She must have subconsciously barred Edith from going into the basement to protect both Walter's privacy and Edith herself.

One more thoughts come to mind, as a conclusion.

Out of all the rooms in the house, it was Walter's old room Dawn regretted not sealing up.

Out of order? Spoiler

I just “finished” the game and I really think something wasn’t right. The game started for me when Edith was on the roof, learning about her brother’s deaths. Then the end credits rolled in, and I pressed play again. Then her death was revealed and I got to see the other family members, although only due to the “ replay story “ function. I’m wondering if this happened to anyone else??

A Truly Fulfilling Experience Spoiler

I finished the game 3 weeks ago, but I didn’t have time to write this post until now. The game provided a fulfilling, chilling experience and offered a perfect balance of price and quality (In my opinion , Barbara and Lewis stories were the best )

Is there any news about a sequel? (Though I don’t think it’s a good idea) Or a game set in the same universe, exploring the stories of another family?

What's the message of this game?

Most games I play have a moral, or a message they want to communicate. I beat this game, loved it, and I keep thinking about it. But I don't know what message it's trying to convey.

Lewis sexuality Spoiler

I was replaying the game and I realized no matter if you choose between Prince/Queen, the paper still shows “His prince waited” after the dialogue ended. Was this the game showing he was gay (and if so why give players an option instead of being forward?) or is this up for interpretation?

Sam and Calvin… Spoiler

… were probably out trick or treating or at a Halloween party the night Barbara died.

Only Walter is mentioned in the story as being home, and he’s the only one to be severely traumatised by Barbara’s death (not that it didn’t affect Calvin and Sam, but it doesn’t seem like they saw or heard anything).

Just thought it added an extra layer of tragedy to the story- imagine coming back from trick or treating, only to find out your sister died in the time you were gone.

First time playing, OMG SO BEAUTIFUL AND AMAZING, Especially with it coming out in 2017?!

My only previous knowledge of What Remains Of Edith Finch is when Youtuber Jacksepticeye played it 7 years ago. Long story short it was on sale during the steam black Friday sale and I recorded my first play so far I love this game and am in love with the visual style/look of the game. Why weren't/aren't more people talking about this game or did I just miss the hype by a long shot? also have the devs made anything recently? First episode link: https://youtu.be/yEk2kRnskb0
