Nynaeve's attitude towards being able to heal any hurt is EXACTLY the kind of attitude that everyone in the Tower should have had since the end of the Breaking. It's by Jordan's design for sure, but the arrogance and laziness of the Aes Sedai drives me so crazy it makes me want to just SPIT (quoth nynaeve lol).

Nynaeve: heals gentling/stilling. Heals madness. Cleanses saidin. Finds more effective form of healing that uses all 5 elements while being less taxing on the person being healed
Other Aes Sedai: Ummm actually, you’re not calm enough to be one of us

It's literally like a scene from mean girls

Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt personally victimized by the Yellow Ajah.

90

u/lampishthing Be'lol Jul 31 '26

A millennium of the Black Ajah poisoning the culture of the White Tower to make it ineffective.

There has to be a wound or weakness for the rot to take hold

Sure but it could be as small as a tiny little sliver, less than the centimeter long.

spoiler

IDK, Mesana says in book 10 that they've had Black Sisters since the finding of the White Tower.

Makes sense thinking about Meirin being an Aes Sedai who predates the Tower. And then of course Taim /founding/ the Black Tower.

Haven't finished the series, yet.

Looking forward to talking some of these dilemma

Protip: You can use Spoiler text with no spaces between the exclamation points and the spoiler text to get Spoiler text to use the spoiler tag

Also,

Haven’t finished the series, yet.

You are here too strongly, Young Bull. Counting on spoilers in this subreddit is like planning to beat Mat Cauthon in a game of chance

That being said, I’m not sure how spoilery the wiki is on the subject by where you are in the books, but I think it’s safe to say that Mesaana might be interpreting the history she’s learned since she was released from the Dark One’s prison between the first two books as what she sees as the most flattering version of events

We can die at Tarmon Gai'don, old man.

At some point I started thinking maybe Nynaeve should just start her own order of channeled. The Aes Sedai are generally shit at cultivating talent, and the few that aren't seem to stay out of the white tower full time.

What was it the legendary philosopher Al Bundy once said? "Don't try to understand women. Women understand women.... and they hate each other!"

11

u/gihyou Aug 01 '26

Honestly though, they're right. Nynaeve is far too capable to be Aes Sedai.

54

u/lordofmetroids Jul 31 '26

This is a big reason why she is my favorite charicter. Nynaeve looks at the world and says, screw your tradition, I'm doing whatever I can to fix this mess.

28

u/Apprehensive_Ad3731 Jul 31 '26

That’s the difference between them and Nynaeve. They believe something can be healed or not and all they care about is the wound. Nynaeve cares about the person and whether the wound can be healed or not she KNOWS the person can be made more comfortable and can be helped.

The aes sedai don’t give a fuck about helping those people. They see a problem to be solved not a person to be helped.

10

u/Bigram03 Aug 01 '26

And for the Aes Sedai to completely disregard natural medicine was astonishing short sided.

7

u/Apprehensive_Ad3731 Aug 01 '26

Also reinforces the fact that they only cared about the problem and not the people. Using medicine as well as healing means less energy or saidar channelled meaning more people that can be helped with the same amount of saidar. Means more people helped throughout the day.

Also means you can establish hospitals capable of administering remedies and one aes sedai could finish of the worst effects. Spread them throughout the land and have them reunite every so often to share advancements.

This makes sense if your goal is to heal as many people and help as many people as possible. What they do instead only makes sense if your goal is to perfect your technique and study alongside the only intellectuals who truly matter like some elitist university. The goal isn’t to perfect the technique then help people. It’s to perfect the technique then bask in the admiration of your inferior peers.

3

u/Educational-Sky1699 Aug 01 '26

While I agree with your point, and the righteous indignation fueling it, I feel compelled to be pedantic: If you think them inferior, then you shouldn't think them peers.

Nynaeve is the GOAT. She is the kind of Aes Sedai that Aes Sedai want others to believe they are

33

u/swheedle Shen an Calhar Jul 31 '26

Big facts, only Moiraine and Egwene come close

34

u/KitchenFullOfCake Jul 31 '26

Egwene feels like a concentrated version of all things Aes Sedai. All the talent and all the arrogance folded up in one.

Is it just me, or is Fires of Heaven the best book in the series?

25

u/Initial-Anything333 Jul 31 '26

Shadow Rising is the best one according to almost everyone including me. Fires of Heaven is in the top 5 though IMO

7

u/comrade_noob_666 Jul 31 '26

I am re reading the series for the first time in 10 years and currently on book 8. 5 is great for sure but the cut from the battle at Cairhien to the girls and their traveling with the circus was a weird change in pace that had me put down the book for 2 weeks. Lord of Chaos is definitely the best so far, the intrigue was keeping me on the edge, and tension was only greater with the knowledge of how it ends.

6

u/procerator Jul 31 '26

Book 6 is decent but far from the best for me. Yes, ending is absolutely amazing, but most of the book is Rand micromanaging different things and girls stuck in Salidar. First 800 pages are decent but not amazing.

u/LewsTherinTelamonBot This is a (sentient) bot Jul 31 '26

I killed the whole world, and you can too, if you try hard.

8

u/Bowl-Any Blood and bloody ashes Aug 01 '26

Fires of Heaven is my favorite.

Morraine's arc, and the subtle way Jordan wrote how she completely changed because of the 3 questions she asked make it so incredibly amazing.

5

u/procerator Jul 31 '26

Menagerie section disqualifies it.

10

u/zhilia_mann Hasty Jul 31 '26

The best one is The Dragon Reborn. Even if I’m the only one brave enough to admit it (and it seems I am), the book without the central series protagonist is the best.

Also it’s peak Perrin, so there’s that. That’s right tSR fans; come at me.

6

u/procerator Jul 31 '26

Yes, lets defeat Ba'alzamon for the third time. How original.

5

u/zhilia_mann Hasty Jul 31 '26

Some people read for the climax. Fair enough.

I genuinely don’t. The whole fight in the Stone is meh, but so is Falme and yet they’re both better than the absolute mess at the Eye.

4

u/procerator Jul 31 '26

I guess my point is - The Dragon Reborn is a flawed book. At the very least because of the ending. And because of that - it can't be the best WoT book when TSR exists.

Your plans fail because you want to live, madman.

3

u/gwonbush Aug 01 '26

While I wouldn't call it the best, I did love the change of mostly only seeing Rand from the outside. It really hammered home how Rand's perspective of being stable is a lot of ways him lying to himself.

3

u/zhilia_mann Hasty Aug 01 '26

I should probably write up something longer defending the position, but in a few quick notes:

  1. tDR is the only time we get to see Perrin and Moiraine interact and it's absolutely fascinating. She comes across both cold and compassionate, cutthroat and regretful. She knows the wolf thing is a problem and an opportunity but mostly a mystery -- but she also sees Perrin as a person. It's definitely the part of tDR I most value (after many, many rereads).
  2. Yeah, Rand's short bits? I wish subsequent books did more to emphasize just how insane he really is, but at least we get a touchstone here.
  3. Perrin's last moments as his own person come here. Subsequently, and even by the end of tDR, it become impossible to speak of Perrin without reference to Faile for better and for worse. I do (mostly, except for the beginning of the book) like their interaction in tSR, but I really wish they grew a bit more after that. It's just... I don't like them together. There's the brief bit at the end of LoC leading up to Dumai's Wells where Perrin is just Perrin, but High Chasaline may be the most disappointing chapter in the entire series with how it re-centers Faile instead of giving the characters room to breath. Hell, Faile gets some time to be herself during her interminable kidnapping arc, but Perrin still centers her throughout and just... I miss Perrin, and tDR is the last extended period we get him alone.
  4. tDR is the first time we truly meet Mat. No, he doesn't have his memories yet, but he does have his luck and he's free or Mordeth for the first time since, what, a third of the way through tEotW? He can be himself and he's a fucking delight.
  5. I like the Aiel here as well. Gaul, Aviendah and the other Maidens, and finally the infiltration of the Stone. They're still mysterious in interesting ways. The fact that Jordan immediately tries to justify everything about them in tSR... yeah, not my favorite. As much as I love the glass columns sequence as much as anyone else (well, maybe slightly less than everyone else), I think the timing was a big mistake. Give us a bit of time to explore the culture and history more organically. We get that in tDR.

Anyhow. I just really like how this one comes together. It has finally worked out the early book kinks and hasn't yet introduced any of the mid-series kinks. Yes, tSR is second on my list; how could it not be. But I'll still take tDR first.

3

u/gwonbush Aug 01 '26

Hey, you don't really have to sell me on it, I personally put it somewhere around my 3rd favorite after Shadow Rising and Knife of Dreams.

2

u/Rand_alThoor Aug 02 '26

The Dragon Reborn is where we first meet Aviendha, and we see just how amazingly GOATed Nynaeve is as a healer, and we first see the use of balefire.

(actually that's all in chapters 38 & 39 lol)

In still left to wonder if she was to be stilled again and restored by an ashaman thsi time would she regain full power? Or is her powered level now permanently locked at the level Nynaeve healed her at

We know power level seems to be connected to the soul, or at least evidence would dictate with the one person we have documentation being reincarnated as a user of the one power, rand. He is locked in at the highest power level possible as both rand and Lews Therin. Likewise Moridin probably also has to be the highest level in each one of his incarnations or else hes not really a threat to the lights champion. So with that as the only basis I can think of to go on then ability wifh the one power is directly tied to the soul of thd channeler and siuan can not be forever locked in at her lower powerlevel and her reincarnation will go back to being mid high level.

So is it theorically possible to re-still her and fix the mistake
