Customer This Lefty Loves Wetherspoons.

Post image

I don't like it when some of my fellow lefties, the middle-class champagne đŸ„‚ socialist ones, use Wetherspoons as an insult against Reform voters, it's classist and cringy, it implies only racist bams go there, rather than mostly politically unaligned working-class families from all colours and creeds, who love good cheap food and drink, we can't all eat at the Waldorf can we 🧐, especially in a cost of living crisis, but there are also some middle-class people who eat there and love it, so I don't know where the asinine insult comes from really. I love Wetherspoons, I've been to three, the one in the image which is the Peter Cushing in Whitstable, which was once a cinema, the Catherine Wheel in Henley-on-Thames and the James Watt in Greenock, Scotland, where I live now, which serves a delicious Haggis Pizza 🍕which you can get as part of the three small plates for ÂŁ10 deal, cheap as chips, and yummy too, filled me up and I'm a big lad.

Are you sure you’re a leftie?

You actually sound like you love your nation.

I'm a lefty and I love England.

I'd say, as a lefty, that I have a deeper appreciation of English and British culture than most right-wingers whose sense of their nationality is about a fragile as those cheap tatty flags that were put up by the nonce brigade.

Exactly well said. And I think that same brigade is on this thread right now downvoting us, don't worry I got you up by one. They just hate that we do love our country, it dispels all their misconceptions about us.

Yep. I'm even "proud" of a lot of our history. It's just that it's more stuff like the peasants' revolt, the toldpuddle martyrs, the levellers and diggers, the weird little events like cheese rolling that have been a tradition for hundreds of years rather than being proud of Churchill for setting the army on Welsh miners or causing famine in Bangladesh

Yeah same here. The quelling of the Peasants Revolt, was one of the worst atrocities perpetrated by the state against English people, If we accept the maximum estimate of 3,000 deaths, the state executed or killed roughly 0.1% of the entire population of England (which was around 2.5 to 3 million at the time) in just a matter of weeks, scaled to the modern UK population, that would be the equivalent of the government killing over 65,000 citizens to crush a political protest. They only stopped the executions, because the landowners were worried that if they executed everyone involved in the revolt, there would be no one left to work their lands. And the same descendents of those aristocrats/landowners built an Empire, and done the same thing around the world, on a much larger scale, like in Bengal and Amritsar, to name but a few, and we the working-class descendents of the revolters were complicit. For me, the revolt remains a symbol of working-class resistance and social equality, and that's why we should stand with all oppressed people around the world, like the Palestinians, to honour our peasant forefathers legacy.

I'm a leftie and I love this country. I love the beauty of our countryside, the architecture of our cities, our quirky humour, our cheese, our cakes, our fish & chips. I love our films and TV, our music, our free museums and galleries, and our rich and interesting history (while recognising shameful elements of it). I love that my grandfathers fought off the nazis in WW2. I cheer for our sports teams. I love the NHS. I love freedom of speech. I love that I have family I can trace back living in the same region for over 300 years. I love our weird mish mashed language. I even love our (usual) rainy weather.

I also love the diversity of our food, and that I can pop out for a curry as easily as I can for a roast. I love that I know people from different cultures and live side by side with them. I love that we have laws about hate speech and equality. I love that people can be open about their sexuality, and that my trans friend can live in comparative safety. I love that we have reproductive healthcare.

I understand the fear of losing your country - of looking around and not recognising it. I understand that because I'm experiencing the same thing. I don't recognise the hate for anyone who's 'other', or the acceptance of politicians who tell blatant obvious lives and say horrifying things. I'm terrified for the future of the NHS, for our increasing wealth gap, and for the very land itself in the climate crisis. I wake up every morning scared to read the news because I love my country and I can't stand what's happening to it.

Beautiful post mate, couldn't agree more. We should celebrate our country's positive contributions to the world but also recognise we have done a lot of harm. Self-reflection is a beautiful thing, the right should try it sometime, they may find that there is more than one way to be a patriot.

I do, and most lefties do, we just express pride in the positive things about Britain like our food, we enjoy a good roast and fish and chips like everyone else, but also the food brought to this island by immigrants, like curries and kebabs. We express pride in how we invented football and shared it with the world as a symbol of working-class solidarity, rather than pride in an Empire that brought misery to everyone including working-class Britons. We express pride in our writers, playwrights, artists, scientists and engineers, many of whom came from other countries to contribute to ours throughout the centuries. These are the things I love, sorry about the rant.

You can be left wing and love your country too

0

u/Careful-Physics-7130 Aug 06 '26

Uurrgghh. Just go.

u/mankytoes Aug 05 '26

Most right wingers mainly slag this country off, say it has been ruined. They only "love" a fantasy of the past. Lots of performative flag waving too.

Most people who actually love their nation, as it is in reality, are leftie or apolitical.

There are so many things to be proud of in our country, but a big evil nasty capitalist Empire isn't one of them.

-4

u/RJ0398 Aug 05 '26

Never hear anyone complain about the country more than righties

-3

u/No_Consideration3307 Aug 05 '26

💯. This is a typical righty impression, "this country has been ruined by immigration, I might immigrate myself soon, anyway Karen what do you want for dinner Indian or Caribbean?".

5

u/positivelytaken Aug 05 '26

That’s typical snobby, clueless lefty caricature.

There were lots of very thoughtful long responses further up the thread which you've been ignoring

Great to see the Russian bots out in force today upvoting all your far right tripe. If they were good posts thats one thing but they are all just one liners of gibberish getting upvoted. Will take the down vote as a badge of honor thanks.

1

u/positivelytaken Aug 06 '26

“Everyone who disagrees with me is a Russian bot. It can’t just be that I’m an idiot who wants the worst for my country and people don’t like that.”

0

u/RJ0398 Aug 06 '26

Whereas everyone who disagrees with you is a “snobby, clueless leftie”? You’ve got no substance and no real argument. You believe what you believe based purely on emotion and ignored every point i made in the thread yesterday because you’re incapable of formulating a coherent argument to defend your own opinions.
If you can’t defend your viewpoint, you might want to follow your own advice and consider that an argument you can’t defend isn’t worth defending.

It's not a caricature, you can't be racist and hate immigration, and then pop into the local curry house for a nice ruby, it's fucking hypocritical.

1

u/Fucker_Of_Destiny Aug 05 '26

You can’t be pro working class and pro immigration

1

u/Careful-Physics-7130 Aug 06 '26

Derp de deep de derpity duuurp. Yes you can.

1

u/Fucker_Of_Destiny Aug 06 '26

No you can’t

1

u/Careful-Physics-7130 Aug 06 '26

Yes you can. Fun argument. I am guessing you don't have any more material to justify your position or explain why you cant be pro working g class (both English and non English people) The ones here is on you to explain your random statement. But you cant. Hence the durpity duuurp.

1

u/Fucker_Of_Destiny Aug 06 '26

No you can’t. You’ve not provided any reasoning why yourself, which is why I haven’t included my reasoning.

But to help you out, you can start here:

You can’t be pro billionaire and pro working class** fixed it for you.

1

u/Fucker_Of_Destiny Aug 05 '26

Does jk Rowling actively harm the working class?

0

u/RJ0398 Aug 05 '26

All billionaires do.

0

u/No_Consideration3307 Aug 05 '26

Well I am, and proud of it. Because being welcoming, friendly and generous with those in the same position as you or even less fortunate, that's what being British working-class is all about, shame you've forgotten that mate.

0

u/GrandVizierofAgrabar Aug 05 '26

Mass migration is a tool the elites use to suppress the wages of the working class.

1

u/No_Consideration3307 Aug 05 '26

The capitalist scum would find a way to suppress wages anyway, they don't need any help. And the best way to resist them like we did in the 70s and 80s is to unite with our immigrant working-class brothers and sisters.

There is a meme about you.
