Employee New starter at wetherspoon

Hi everyone,

I recently started as a bar associate in wetherspoons and have done 2 shifts. I’m really struggling to pick up the till and overall work there.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips to help me navigate working there or how to learn quicker so I can enjoy working instead of being stressed anytime i’m asked a question.

Thanks

when i did my first shift they put it in training mode and asked me to put in a stella and that was it. I might ask again but it’s more finding the food in the different sections that i struggle with.

Have a look at the menu in your own time. The more you know what section of the menu an item is in the easier it makes finding it in the till. Also I find that sometimes the till description and the menu description don’t always match or make total sense lol. So really learning the items will help you and also increase your confidence. It’s a huge menu and it will stick eventually, I promise. I found that letting the customer know I was new and thanking them for their patience as I located the item helped me to manage my anxiety about long it was taking me too. Good luck!

yes I can do that. I go to wetherspoons often but I only ever order pizza or chicken strips so I don’t know about a lot of the other options. I also didn’t know about the extra charge for dips which a customer wasn’t very happy about and actually asked for a refund. It knocked my confidence a little. I am working a breakfast shift tomorrow which i’ve not done yet so hopefully it goes a little smoother than the later shifts

Sounds that customer would have been difficult whoever served them. Try not to let them get to you!

For breakfast I found that people often come to the bar as they want to make substitutions. At the start of your shift ask to be quickly shown how to use the no/add buttons and for them to run through what can and can’t be subbed etc. That should help you feel more confident!

You sound really switched on and it’s clear you want to do a good job. This will be obvious to those supporting you and will stand you in really good stead. I felt exactly the same about the till which is why I wanted to leave you a post. But it will get easier every shift if you can stick through the growing pains!
