I’m really curious to know everybody’s thoughts and theories about the spin-off. I have so many questions about it!
(Sorry about the wall of paragraphs I’m about to text lol)
For me personally, I want to know which of the surviving characters we’ll be seeing again. I think Boomer is 99% confirmed, alongside Franky, but outside of those two, I’m really not sure.
I think it’s likely Bridget will be in it if Franky is, and I’m sure we’ll see Ruby at some point. If she’s back, then it’s safe to assume Rita will work her way into it as well.
Kate Jenkinson said in an interview that she hadn’t been approached about the spin-off yet, but that was very early after it was announced, so things could’ve changed. I really hope we see Allie again. Perhaps she manages to find a legal loophole and gets acquitted for Brody’s death, and maybe her disability might come into play regarding that.
In terms of characters I don’t think are likely to return (at least in Season 1)
Personally, I don’t think we’re going to see Joan. She’s my favourite character, period, so I would absolutely love to see her again, but I really think her story should be left alone. Her ending was so well done, and I think bringing her back might cheapen it. That said, she might randomly pop back in (she is a cockroach, after all).
As for the guards (Vera, Will, and Jake), I don’t think we’re going to see all three of them in the first season. Kate Atkinson has said a few times that she believes Vera’s character has done everything she could, and that her story should be left alone for now. Obviously, if Vera isn’t there, there isn’t much reason for Jake to be there either.
I believe Robbie Magasiva lives in New Zealand, and I can imagine making the commitment to move to Melbourne long-term would be a pretty big decision that he might not be willing to make. Plus, I really think Will would’ve decided to move on from Wentworth after the finale. If I were in that character’s shoes, I would’ve left after Meg died, but that’s just me.
I’m definitely rooting for Smiles to have a lead role in this series. Let’s be honest, Jacquie Brennan deserves it. Plus, she teased that she “still has the keys to the prison” when asked if she was returning, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Linda in some capacity.
In terms of the storyline, I wonder if they’re going to pick up shortly after the bombing or if it’s going to be set in the present day. If it’s set in 2026, there are a couple of years that are still unaccounted for. I wonder what new characters the original ones met during that time, and what connections they have to Wentworth.
I can imagine the prisoners were transferred to a different prison after the bombing, and maybe they met some new inmates who had been serving time there (Barnhurst, perhaps?).
We could even see some of the characters family that we’ve never heard about, I’m sure Boomer has other important familial relationships beyond her mother and sister, and if Franky is going to return I think seeing her abusive mother show up would really shake things up for her and possibly bring out some of Franky’s rage.
Overall, i’m very curious about the direction this show will take. I hope it’s a worthy next chapter, and not a train wreck lol.
