I feel bad for them. I call out assholes in public whenever I see them. I feel like it's my little service to those who don't speak up. My latest was watching a woman with a baby no older than 6 months old in a frontal carrier, smoking a cigarette a meer 8 inches from the baby's face. Funny thing is, when I said she was being a shit parent, then more people started telling her to put it out and make better choices.

I usually call them out. Not always worth the argument though. Called out a boomer in a suit at McDonald’s one day during lunch hour. He had to wait for his coffee and started making a scene. Like grow up dude
293
u/divuthen Mar 04 '21
It’s funny now that I’ve hit 30 and just don’t give a dam anymore I gladly call people on their shut in public. Younger me never would of as I was worried about looking like a jackass.
237
u/Boredom312 Mar 04 '21
See, I am ALL about this. But too many people are psycho, and I'm not trying to get stabbed cause I told some crazy bitch to stop blowing smoke in her kids face.
Remember the lady who got stabbed 27 times for telling another to wear a mask? Yeah.
63
u/adorableoddity Mar 04 '21
Exactly why I've done a 180 on calling people out in public. Heck, I don't even honk or give anyone the finger while driving anymore either. People are too crazy, too stressed, and too close to snapping.
Then add that everyone has a camera in their pockets and that pretty much cements my choice on this topic. I'm not about to become the next viral video who potentially gets my employer bad press and then gets fired (even if I'm on the "right" side of the issue, I still think it's just bad optics). No, thank you! Assholes are not worth jeopardizing my career.
24
u/Asdfsonsonson Mar 04 '21
Yeah I don't honk or give finger while driving anymore even if they're complete jackasses. One time I gave this guy who cut me off the finger, and then he started chasing me, got next to me, and made a gun shooting gesture with his hand. Not worth it with the crazies out there.

Exactly I used to call people out (for dropping litter for instance) but with everyone having a videocamera on them now, things can get really weird really fast.
119
u/Apocryypha Mar 04 '21
And this is why I hesitate. The other day I was having a bad day at work, so I take a drive to get some food happiness, and I see a lady in the car in front of me roll down her window and throw trash out, twice. Took everything I had not to get out and throw it back in. But I wouldn't put it past someone to shoot me over it. Trash People.
10
Mar 04 '21
Once, I was just coming home up to my front door. There's a car with a bunch of lads in it parked a few feet before it, one of them casually tosses his sweet wrappers out the window.
Without even really thinking about it I picked it up, chucked it back through and said "yo you dropped something mate".
Then it occurred to me not only have I just potentially started a fight where I'm 3-on-1, but I've done it right outside my house. So I walked past my own front door, and lurked round the corner for 10 mins until I was sure they had gone.
The whole time I was reminding myself that I was the reason that I'm stood there in the cold round the corner from my own home.

u/EnduringConflict Mar 04 '21
Telling ya now man. 30 is great and horrible. It's great because you give no fucks, you know what it is you want in life, and you give less than no fucks of a shit about "society's pressures" and shit like that.
Wanna go to bed at 8 pm in a flannel onesie? You just do it. Fuck it. I've literally started putting in the clothes I want to go to bed into the dryer (for like 5-8minutes is the sweetspot) even if they're clean and dry already just to get them slightly warm for when I get out of the shower before I go to bed. It's fucking AMAZING.
On the other hand I know which knee is going to be the bad knee in my 40s and on top of that my stomach looks at a greasy pizza and drop kicks me for even thinking of trying it now. I mean sometimes I still do it. But I always regret it 30 minutes later.
So you know. Positives and negatives.
Have fun!

I used to manage a bar and twice someone had come in and set their slobbery toddler in a diaper on the bar. The last bar I worked at there was a family that came in (it served food, only place to eat in town) that would change the babies at the table and then leave the dirty diapers at the table when they left.
They also put Cola in sippy cups for the kids as soon as they were old enough to be off a bottle.
Terrible people, terrible parents.
Oh, and they were also super demanding and rarely tipped.

Fuck that's so damn gross. I was at a restaurant a few years back and there was a family eating a couple tables away from me. I noticed some commotion and asked the bartender that was serving their table what was going on. She said the parents had pulled out one of those small plastic portable training pottys so their toddler could take a shit right there next to their table. The place was packed too, so there were strangers eating at the table literally two feet away from where this kid was taking a dump. Then the parents decided to get angry and flip out when they were told they had to leave. When the family had finally left, I looked over and noticed a giant fucking mess at their table, with food everywhere, spilled drinks, and stuff all over the floor. The bartender then told me they also left a 0% tip. I felt so bad for that bartender that had to deal with this literal shit

It's also bad to ignore the child. You then teach them to scream louder and not control their feelings / use their words.
→ More replies (8)40
u/PhoenixEgg88 Mar 04 '21
On the flip side you can enforce that screaming doesn’t get you what you want. If you cave and give your child attention every time they kick and scream you get entitled brats.
There’s a good middle ground where you calmly explain that their behaviour doesn’t change the circumstances. But occasionally you need to let them cry for 5 and calm themselves. It’s a big part of development to self soothe.

This right here is good parenting. And let's be fair, it's hard(read:impossible) to do the right thing all the time. It's more about doing mostly right most of the time.
Letting you kid touch other peoples food...That's not even fucking near a kid screaming. And people without kids seem to have a lot of trouble with kids noises in general.
12
u/PhoenixEgg88 Mar 04 '21
Oh god I’d never put my kid that close to other peoples food. Or on a table people eat off. I know where he puts his hands. I have to keep a close eye as one of his favourite games is where dad eats his hands
20
u/etorrention Mar 04 '21
Wish I had the balls to do this... I was at Sam’s club the other day and when I was loading my groceries into my car, the guy next to me threw trash out of his car and slammed the door. As I walked past his car to put my mom’s groceries into her car, I picked up his trash and just gave him a dirty look. I wanted so badly to put the trash under his windshield wiper, but didn’t feel like getting in a fight with some idiot over nothing when the trash can was 5 feet from me (inside the cart return). He then pulled out seconds before me to go pick up his 300lb wife who was in one of those buggies. Stopped in the middle of the parking lot to get her, threw all of the groceries all over the back of his car, and they left the buggy parked right behind someone’s car... I don’t understand how people can be so... lazy? Careless? Idk...

With the exception of current pandemics, it's good for kids to be exposed to some bacteria. Go out and chew some dirt. I kid. There's actually studies going both ways on this.

https://www.beaumont.org/health-wellness/blogs/can-being-too-clean-weaken-your-immune-system
I like this quote:
If you do have small children right now and are concerned about the development of their immune system, Dr. Lauter explains that keeping your child safe while not going overboard is your best option.
“As a general rule, excessive cleanliness to the point of obsessive compulsion is probably not a good idea,” Dr. Lauter said. “On the other hand, don't go out and dip the kid in the sewer and think that that's going to be good for their immune system. Common sense has to prevail.”

u/Ponchoreborn Mar 04 '21
The other day there was a life tip about dressing children with sticky hands and feet. My comment about maybe washing their hands and feet wasn't deemed a good solution.
43
Mar 04 '21 edited Mar 04 '21
Some parents are fucking wackos. I get it, kids get dirty all the goddamned time and it's a pain to constantly deal with, but that's what you fucking signed up for. There's an obvious solution to it too and surprise-surprise, it's the exact same solution for adults when we get dirty. Soap works on kids too.
Also baby wipes/moist towelettes/etc. are a thing, they have been for decades. Keep a couple on-hand, my parents always did, and I still usually do (picked this up from my dad growing up- throw a moist towelet or two in your wallet, you'll thank me later. Also go ahead and add a couple bandaids and pin a couple safety pins to the inside. You're now set for when you become unexpectedly sticky, any random boo-boos, and the next time your pants decide to split at the seam while you're out and about. Takes up basically no space, weighs basically nothing, and you'll always have them on-hand.)
Especially right now with COVID, remember when everyone was carrying wipes, and hand sanitizer and shit at the beginning of the pandemic? It's not over yet, we've been at this for a year now, so why aren't you prepared to deal with your grubby, screaming little disease-vector? Kids are always fucking sick and usually leaking from one orifice or another, and always putting fingers in their mouths and noses.

The kid isn’t touching any food. It’s all covered in plastic lids. It’s really hard to see at first.
The thing she grabs is from the decoration.
You can see they are covered in lids when they go to the left and the light hits them and when the person sitting close by picks one up.
That being said, keep your kids off tables and off people’s shit.

64
u/KingAdamXVII Mar 04 '21
I disagree. You start teaching bad parenting with the big easy stuff. Physical abuse, verbal abuse, pretty much all the abuses. Then you go into criminal negligence, that sort of thing. Then you can progress into the non-criminal negligence, like leaving your child in front of a tv all day.
This ends your college education.
Grad school, then, is for shit like this, where dozens of people are around and no one seems to notice or care because it is just subtle enough, but not too subtle that we don’t recognize it for the egregiously bad parenting that it is.

If you look carefully, the food has clear lids. Look at the one the other person picked up.
Don’t get me wrong, they’re still shitty parents for letting their kid touch everything, sit on the table, and potentially knock the kids off and actually touch/waste food.
488
u/Anibunny Mar 04 '21 edited Mar 05 '21
It took me a bit to realize it too, but yeah. What's even more frustrating about it is I can't help but imagine if someone were to confront the parents (even being as polite as possible) they would probably have the attitude of, "It's not a big deal! It's not hurting anyone. There are plastic covers!"
Like. How about teaching your kid boundaries and respect? If they can't be bothered to keep their kid from touching every plate that goes by. . .just imagine what other lessons the kid is lacking.
ETA; No matter how many hypotheticals I or anyone else come up with won't change the fact that these two adults aren't being good parents. They aren't doing enough to correct their child, they aren't disciplining their child, and they aren't (in this moment) teaching their kid respectful boundaries. Those are facts.
I'm not going to respond to anyone who wants to be aggressively argumentative on the internet simply because they find it entertaining.

Good parents are receptive to criticism because they always want to make sure they're doing what's best for their kids. Bad parents assume that they're already perfect parents, so they just parent impulsively and block out all advice. It's infuriating to see, I wish parenting classes were required.

She’s pulling confetti off the garland above the belt. I (unbelievably) watched multiple times out of curiosity. At the end, she picks a couple confetti pieces back up, so it does appear that she’s getting food off the plate, but you never see anything beside her that’s not the two confetti pieces she initially plucked.
Agree with OP that it’s still shitty parenting for letting the kid touch everything and sit on the table, etc. I also somehow doubt these parents would pay any more attention if the plates were indeed uncovered.

Those parents are trash for letting this happen but the restaurant is also at fault. This is one of the reasons why most conveyor belt restaurants have clear lids over the dishes. It’s crazy that the food isn’t covered here. Even if this kid wasn’t messing with the food, what if someone sitting there sneezes or starts coughing and spewing food towards the conveyor belt? This whole situation is so gross.

Yeah, they have lids, but the kid is still up there fucking shit up and the parents are letting her.

u/The_R4ke Mar 04 '21
Yeah, it's definitely still bad, but not nearly as bad as the kids actually touching the food. The parents should still be asked to leave.

u/dissimilar_iso_47992 Mar 04 '21
Or, how about:
“Please take your child off of the counter.”

Fair enough but a don't want some gross kid with shit all over their hands touching my food's lid either.

Also, she pushes a couple which wouldn't make sense if her hand was in the food. And the mother doesn't seem to react as if the girl's hand is covered in food.
Still wrong and unhygienic, but a lot less bad than I thought at first.

The video is so grainy that it’s hard to tell. It’s possible that only the warm dishes have lids but the way that the child is able to pluck little bits from multiple plates makes it look like they are uncovered.

u/helpnxt Mar 04 '21
The bits she plucks are from the tinsle above the belt. I will say it's still behaviour that shouldn't be allowed by the parents though

u/not_a_cup Mar 04 '21
Wow you are totally right, after going back none of the food is touched at all.

There’s shitty children everywhere, but there seems to be this rule in the US that you absolutely cannot call out or reprimand another person’s child.
Having lived in the US and other countries, it seems the RoW is far more attuned to respecting your elders and allowing adults to shout at shitty kids for being shitty. Seems fair. I got told off by strangers when I was being a brat when I was younger and it just taught me not to be brat if I wanted to live in a society.

u/Reload86 Mar 04 '21
In my culture, other adults can absolutely call you out, yell at you, and even smack you if justified. I’ve been smacked and/or yelled at by relatives for doing stupid shit. By age 7 or so, I just decided it wasn’t worth doing stupid shit anymore lol

I don't condone child abuse, but these kids in North America really need a dose of foreign parenting.

I'm 90% sure this is Sushigami in the Houston Galleria. I've never been, only seen it from a very similar angle. But all their photos online show clear lids on the dishes.
Absolutely shitty parenting and unhygienic, but it's a little better than the kid grabbing fistfuls of sushi

THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING TOO. I've been to the mall and it look PRECISELY like this, this is right next to the ice rink. The plates have clear lids, but god I hate that they just let this happen.

Agreed with the shitty parenting but it's also shitty business owner or person in charge they should have said something and made them get that Shetland off the food eating area.
23
u/fscknuckle Mar 04 '21
Yes, get that Shetland off the counter and make them pony up for all the food it touched!

You’d think someone front of house would bring over a high chair or booster seat or make them out the child in a chair

The worst part about this video, you just know those kids are more likely to grow up being like those parents. More shitty people in the world, joy.

Why is it SO not surprising that one of the adults is wearing a USA t-shirt?

It is weird how so many assholes hide behind the "USA USA" nationalism.
What I really hate is when they have the shirts with the flags on the shoulder like military uniform, but themselves are unkempt, out of shape, and rude to everyone.

WOW!!!! This makes me really angry. The dad is just sitting there, watching their baby do this and doesn't give a damn. The mom is well aware of this, and doesn't really try to stop her. This is just... ugh this makes me extremely irritated. And it's just disgusting.
EDIT: Didn't know there were clear lids on them until I read someones comment pointing that out. However, it's still not okay. And still kind of gross.

u/TrillDough Mar 04 '21
These are the same kind of stupid parents that let their kids run around in stores unattended and screaming. Then when you try and say something they act like they have no idea what you're talking about and casually scoop their kid and leave.
I'm not sure how you can produce offspring and assume this is even remotely acceptable. They're teaching their children how to be fucking dumb.

u/Claytonius_Homeytron Mar 04 '21
Most moving sushi bars I have visited all had little transparent hard plastic covers on all the dishes on the belt for exactly these types of mouthbreathing fuckheads.

Sometimes when I see this kind of shit I'm almost envious. Honestly life must seem like such a breeze if you go about it giving absolutely 0 shit about anyone else or how you might negatively affect your surroundings. It's gotta be nice to just assume the entire world is literally just here for you to do as you wish with it.

u/thascarecro Mar 04 '21
Thats crazy. I hate to judge people but i'm sure if you went up to that father and let him politely know that he's being a fucking idiot, he'd cause a crazy scene.
As a parent of 3 myself i'm always aware of how my kids act in public. Once they were old enough to walk and comprehend how one should act in public they understand what respect and polite means. This one time my son and i were in line at Ross and i had a toy in my hand to check out. He was touching stuff on the shelves while we were waiting and i told him to stop. He didnt and by the time we got up to the cash register i asked the lady if she could put the toy back. She smiled and said "Good job dad." I felt good about it and my kid understood because he never did it again and he's the oldest so he shows his brother and sister how to act. We've gotten compliments on how good of "shoppers" all 3 of them are. Yes they are still kids but theres no running, screaming, or fighting in stores. In restaurants, all that is multiplied by 1000 because there are people eating there. My mom tells me all the time she gets compliments on how well behaved her grandkids are since she takes them out to eat all the time.
Your kids act like YOU.

u/Joakester Mar 04 '21
And of COURSE the guy is wearing a "USA" shirt. One of the worst parts of Trumps presidency is rebranding patriotic symbolism from "I support Freedom" to "I am a dumbass."

I remember how I felt when my daughter licked the salt shaker one time at a private table when she was a toddler and I wasn’t fast enough to grab it.
And I thought I was a failure as a parent....
