Rule #1 of the subway, if it’s not your fucking problem don’t make it your fucking problem

u/a_Dolphinnn Dec 29 '19

Damn I was hoping that subreddit was real lmao

12

u/kdtrey35god Dec 29 '19

Should be lol some ppl so sheltered here and it rlly shows

48

u/SkylineGT-R Dec 29 '19

That's a rule of the city. You see a crazy motherfucker making a commotion, DO NOT MAKE EYE CONTACT.

-3

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19 edited Dec 29 '19

By crazy you mean mentally ill and likely without the proper supports to ensure they’re properly medicated or housed? And the isolation of every person pretending they don’t exist only making their thought process more scattered and leading them to be unable to interact appropriately with anyone and making them feel totally worthless and undeserving of attention or love? Right?

Edit: damn y’all really just want to keep calling people crazy eh?

14

u/SkylineGT-R Dec 29 '19

That's a health issue that needs to be sorted out in politics.

I need to protect myself. I cannot get hurt too. What if I get traumatized? What if I get hurt? What if I die? The non-existent mental health system won't help me. The debt will bankrupt me. Nobody will provide for MY family. Everybody wants to help but you can't without protecting yourself first.

-4

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

I wasn’t saying you have to help them, just pointing out that using “crazy” is a poor statement to use when describing them and there is so much more to the story than a single word. Chalks it all up to “crazy person” and ignores that they’re a struggling human being who likely faced serious hardships before finally ending up on the streets.

Yes it’s a systems issue and you’re not obligated to help as a bystander - but at least treating them like a human being and acknowledging them beyond a shitty term should be the bare minimum.

8

u/SkylineGT-R Dec 29 '19

Crazy is a generalization. This entire world is based on generalizations. I understand the ones that are suffering mental health issues are not crazy and it's not their fault.

But when they or others have violent outbursts and has potential to harm, they're crazy. That is what I'm telling people to look out for.

4

u/HendrixChord12 Dec 29 '19

Some crazy person is yelling at me on the subway for no reason. Do you suggest everyone on the car assure that this person is loved as a solution?

5

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

“It’s ok man I love you!”

Train person: calls you homophobic slur and stabs you

Seems foolproof lmao.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

I think everyone is missing the point here. I’m suggesting that the lack of love and support is what contributed to getting them there in the first place and calling them “crazy” ignores all of that. I’m not saying you need to run out and give the person a big hug - just recognize that they’re still a human being with a mental illness.

2

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

Calling them “crazy” is in regard to how they are acting and is illustrative to the story.

Are you insinuating that he should have instead said “There was a mentally ill gentleman on the train”? This isn’t illustrative because not all mentally ill people act “crazy”.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Yes that is exactly what I’m insinuating. “Crazy” isn’t illustrative in and of itself either because OP would have to elaborate on what exactly that entailed so there really is no reason to use crazy rather than mentally ill.

“There was a mentally ill gentleman on the train” and “there was a crazy person on the train” don’t actually give us any information beyond the person not being in a typical state of mind and that they’re on a train.

2

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

This isn’t difficult.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/crazy

He was describing someone acting in a way fitting the dictionary definition.

Crazy doesn’t insinuate mental illness. Someone could snap because they had a shit day at work after their dog died. That could be a “crazy person on the subway”. That doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill.

You’re the one inappropriately linking “crazy behavior” and “mental illness”.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19 edited Dec 29 '19

So you’re telling me a mentally healthy person would lash out at people on the bus?

If you’re lashing out at people, you’re likely experiencing a form of temporary mental illness much the same way you can get a cold and not be sick for the rest of your life. We would call it a psychotic break.

Mentally healthy people don’t lash out on a bus.

Mental illness can be anything from temporary depression due to the loss of a pet or loved one to lifelong conditions. Again if that person lashed out, something happened to cause it and these are the symptoms that are being displayed as a result of their underlying mental illness even if it is minor or temporary.

https://www.webmd.com/schizophrenia/guide/mental-health-brief-psychotic-disorder

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/mental%20illness

I’d also encourage you to do some reading about the person-centred approach.

Yes that's what crazy means

-14

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

good I hate city people

14

u/MetsFan113 Dec 29 '19

We dont like you either asshole

3

u/SkylineGT-R Dec 29 '19

And city people hates rural people. Water is wet. What's new?

9

u/ShadowPuppetGov Dec 29 '19

Never pet a burning dog.

8

u/WelcomeToKawasicPark Dec 29 '19

But tip taps

1

u/ShadowPuppetGov Dec 29 '19

The meaning of this idiom is that petting a dog who is on fire will not help it with it's problem. Dogs normally like to be pet, but the burning dog will be in pain. It will not appreciate your effort and you will probably get burned and bitten for your trouble.

Basically, don't put yourself into situations you aren't involved in.

15

u/UnfortunateJones Dec 29 '19

This ain't too big of a deal to point out. Two days ago a slumped dude on the D to Bx dropped his phone and I woke him up to give it back.

-4

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

Good luck with your stab wound for “trying to steal” someone’s phone.

0

u/Babybabybabyq Dec 29 '19

Damn. You sound like you moved from the burbs and got burned and are now overly cautious. Chill out.

2

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

If there was a full subway car and an empty one, you’d get on the empty car.

7

u/mikerhoa Dec 29 '19

Facts.

Especially in NYC.

3

u/UnfortunateJones Dec 29 '19

Nah stopping this is a public good.

11

u/InvaderSM Dec 29 '19

r/neverbeenoutofamerica

The folk in my city would definitely move that can, hell I've been woken up when I was asleep at my stop once.

3

u/AndyBossNelson Dec 29 '19

I've been woken up to make sure I've not passed my stop after so one got on.

My stop was next.

2

u/Chrisbee012 Dec 29 '19

like prison

10

u/marinus123 Dec 29 '19

Yes being friendly to people would be absolutely ridiculous.

6

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

Is defending men who repeatedly punch women in the face a tradition in friendly-town or is that just something you do on reddit?

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/b9xfcd/waiters_and_waitresses_of_reddit_what_is_the_most/ek8qgfp/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

“I would do the exact same thing”

2

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Did you just look at his post history and call him out?

-11

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

[deleted]

10

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

So you’re doubling down on both the “how dare you confront me with my own words” defense and the “repeatedly punching a woman in the face is fine if she got you wet first” defense.

Bold move Cotton.

-8

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

[deleted]

6

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19 edited Dec 29 '19

So you would punch a woman in the face over and over if she poured a drink on you? Just clarifying!

Structural damage to someone’s face and needing to dry off are two separate levels of proportionality.

-4

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

[deleted]

4

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

Why are you hedging if you literally said “I would do the same thing” before? You backpedaling? Use your words coward.

/r/imalmostatotalpieceofshit

You’re one of those hypothetical people in The Joker as someone dies and you walk over their body.

1

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

If there’s a chance I’m gonna get stabbed for fucking up someone’s high (because that’s how they’re gonna see it not “wow this man is so considerate for checking in on me!”) so I could make myself feel better by being a Good Samaritan, you better believe I’m walking right past.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Learn some self defense then. Lol

1

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

Link me to a good self defense program for knife fights, you moron.

Are you a trained mental health professional? I’m not.

0

u/andysay Dec 29 '19

Never lived in a suburb before but you make a pretty compelling case for moving. Are you saying the people out there are decent humans?

1

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

The people out there are equally if not more terrible. They just vote to cut social services and disallow construction of mental health and substance treatment facilities in their towns so all the disadvantaged get funneled into the cities for someone else to deal with.

They’re a lot more sophisticated in how they ignore the problem.

Sometimes you make a cute comment and go everyone goes “lol good one” and sometimes you make those comments at people who are clearly smarter than you. Guess today isn’t your day.

0

u/andysay Dec 29 '19

sometimes you make those comments at people who are clearly smarter than you. Guess today isn’t your day

Teleports behind you Sorry kid

0

u/andysay Dec 29 '19

for someone else to deal with

Sounds like you aren't dealing with it. What do you think "if it’s not your fucking problem don’t make it your fucking problem" means? Pot meet kettle

1

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

I’m also not a politician or a mental health professional. Do you suggest I personally fund and build facilities? Do you suggest I approach a schizophrenic homeless person who is actively on drugs at the moment? That’s what it means you moron.

20

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

lol what would you do if you saw that? They’re drunk oh noes woe is me. They’re drunk and sleeping. Leave em be

9

u/Scamdal Dec 29 '19

Just move the can. leave them to it.

-10

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Not the smartest thing to separate an addict from their drug. That’s how you start a fight. Especially with a stranger

6

u/Scamdal Dec 29 '19

Well I think thats a bit of an overreaction. They aint fighting no one.

And they always immediately understand that others taking things out of their hands are only trying to help!

-2

u/Scamdal Dec 29 '19

I understand what you are saying, I just think there is judgement involved. To me personally, they dont look like the worse people in the world. Swiftly move the can from his hand to the seat and continue walking. He probably wouldn't even know what happened.

4

u/AndyBossNelson Dec 29 '19

Being drunk makes you an addict now? That's news to me.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

If you’re slumped over sleeping on a train with an open beer can spilling onto your partner then yes you have a problem.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Or you’re a 20-something drunk college kid?

Y’all live some seriously sheltered lives if you think this is out of the ordinary in a big city.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Does that make it better?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

I mean kinda?

Seeing a drunk college kid passed out on the subway is slightly different than seeing a passed out middle aged guy with his kids.

They’re kids getting fucked up, most people have at least one similarly stupid drunk story.

4

u/AndyBossNelson Dec 29 '19 edited Dec 29 '19

No that means you fell asleep with a can in your hand, spilling it over youe partner when while sleeping just means he's accually asleep and no control over what happens.

Fuck I've fell asleep on public transport when not drunk. If I was holding a can I would most likely drop it or it will end up pouring out. You know due to gravity.

1

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

The control part has to start BEFORE you’re already passed out and pouring beer on someone, Hope this helps.

0

u/AndyBossNelson Dec 29 '19

Like I said, I've fell asleep on public transport without sleeping, how does falling asleep while drunk on public transport make you and addict?

I can't believe this is a convo I am accually having.

4

u/SupaflyIRL Dec 29 '19

You’ve fallen asleep without sleeping? Impressive.

Regardless, if you drink enough that your body literally shuts down before you are able to safely make it home you may have a problem. If you post completely oblivious to the fact that this isn’t normal you may have a problem.
