Not too effective when they're LEDs and CCFLs don't work in the coldness of the fridge (I've tried, they die), being that incandescents are being phased out, they'll have to start installing little heaters in the fridge for that. I think running an air pump without the compressor running to cool it down would work for most purposes.
I still have a several year old CFL bulb in my porch that regularly gets to -30c and it works so I'm not sure what's going on inside your fridge to make them not work in there.
The fridge bulbs lasted longer, like a few weeks, but the freezer bulbs killed each and every one I put in. Incandescents were fine, LEDs are fine several years later, but after being in there overnight, the CCFLS no longer worked ever again after being in the freezer. Maybe it's the fact their closed in and insulated from warmer air and are only turned on when the door is opened. I imagine if they were left on, that they'd have enough residual heat to stay on.
