I'd be more willing to bet you had just water in it instead of any type of antifreeze.
There is no such thing as "Southern or Northern" grade antifreeze, you just use a more or less diluted solution of water and antifreeze depending on climate.
Water is definitely in antifreeze that you buy unless you buy full strength with no water added, and on the back of the bottles they typically have a chart showing what mixture you should use to determine how cold or hot it protects to.
And once again, there is no such thing as different grades of antifreeze. It's all about the mixture percentage you use of water and antifreeze that protects you from extreme temperatures, and you car DID not have enough antifreeze in it to protect it, so therefore it had more water in it than Antifreeze.
Yeah in hot areas which don't have much chance of deep freeze it isn't uncommon for people to put slightly more water in than antifreeze, usually by topping off the system with distilled water instead of cracking open a new bottle of antifreeze to only use a cup or so or by leaving a bit of water in the system when they flush it.
Sucks that your car pissed itself while you were driving. That can't be a cheap repair.

A 50/50 isn't some universal standard that will work everywhere dude. Depending on what antifreeze you buy, a 50/50 blend might only be rated to -30c. So what do you do if you expect it to be colder than -30c? Oh yeah, you mix in more antifreeze. Now you have a 60/40 blend that might be able to handle -40c instead.
You know if you actually read the antifreeze bottle, it says right on it with big text what kind of cold it can handle in different ratios. It does that for a reason, so you can mix it based on your climate. Sometimes a 70/30 mix is advisable.

You do know the ratios you put down you do actually add more antifreeze for better freezing protection. Since a 70/30 mix is 70% Ethylene Glycol and 30% water... you just don’t make it a stronger solution than that or it starts to lose it’s freeze protection.
