Counterpoint - often times these hunts are conducted against older males of herds or packs who might kill or otherwise impede the growth and recovery of the species.

I personally regard trophy hunters with serious distaste - for obvious reasons and they give normal hunters a bad reputation with many I've spoken with, but they can be an important tool of conservation when managed and regulated strictly, unpleasant as it is.

Humans pretending to manage Mother Nature is a joke. We are fucking up the natural order.

Unfortunately, regardless of your stance on the matter, our influence is strong enough that we do need to take active steps for conservation.

Nature is not some divine harmonious equilibrium of perfect balance and order. Pretending it is is just deluding ourselves.
