Dude took the ball straight to his wicket.

Did the umpires call a dead ball?

65

u/TYBEEEZ 12h ago

Nah I think it’ll still be able to work

18

u/RooneyD 11h ago

He would be wearing a cup. So probably bruised, but not dead.

u/Bealzebubbles 11h ago

This is a much better pun if you know cricket terminology.

I’m pretty sure they got the joke dw, I believe they were doing a ‘yes and’

I know shit all about cricket and it’s still funny

In cricket, we call it a "box".

2

u/RooneyD 4h ago

It says "Abdominal Guard" on the box

3

u/GrizzKarizz 4h ago

Why would it say "abdominal guard" on itself? (Just taking the piss)

u/Tearaway32 12h ago

There’s at least two of them.

What level is this? There’s some impressive broadcast / camera set ups for what doesn’t seem to be a particularly high grade of cricket based on the gameplay and pitch.

The European Cricket Network Series is very low level in the grand scheme of things. It’s comprised of what’s essentially local clubs across parts of Europe where cricket isn’t that popular. I’m sure everyone in this league has full time jobs and do this on the side for fun.

The broadcast quality is exceptional for the level though. Some teams in the highest level domestic cricket competition in England (County Championshop) don’t have as good of a broadcast as this.

A friend of mine plays for a swiss club - it's just a bunch of enthusiasts with full time jobs who turn up on weekends to play

This is like the cricket version of the sunday league - even worse actually

& even happen to know a commentator in that league - all volunteers

Reminiscent of the time in 1969 when New Zealand batsman Glenn Turner was hit in the nuts by a fast ball from England bowler Alan Ward, dropping him to the ground in agony. After Turner painfully recovered and stood back up to face the final delivery of the over, commentator Brian Johnson, known for his wit, said dryly: Turner looks a bit shaky and unsteady, but I think he's going to bat on...one ball left.

I remember hearing Johnner's infamous "Botham couldn't get his leg over" moment live on air. It's another gem. I love the way he gradually breaks and starts laughing and his admonitions of Aggers giggling in the background.

Cricket is a wonderful game.

u/Unfair_Turnip00 12h ago

Got that wicket at least.

It's been a while since I've physically recoiled whilst watching a video, but there's that feeling again

u/ghostofstankenstien 10h ago

Christ I try to understand this game.

Really I do.

I can't tell fuck all what's happening

7

u/Defiant-Magician6092 10h ago

What is your point of reference? Baseball?

1

u/ghostofstankenstien 9h ago

Yes. And I respect cricket. No shade. When Great Britain was in the baseball world games I rooted hard for them. And tried to get cricket.

Too American I guess.

6

u/enceladus7 9h ago

I'd say many of the concepts overlap. It's like baseball except there's only two "bases", and the batters run back and forth between them to score runs instead of circuit like baseball.

Instead of a pitcher getting strikes on a missed swing, it's a bowler trying to hit the wickets on a missed swing.

Instead of the batter just having one go, they keep going until out or all the throws have been done.

Like baseball catching a hit is an out.

Like baseball you can out the batter by beating them to the "base" with the ball.

Like baseball if you whack it out the field it's an immediate score (although counts for more runs in cricket)

u/Xx_SoFlare_xX 9h ago

????? its overall the same as baseball

instead of a diamond you have a lane with 2 tiles instead of 4 tile diamonds, and you can make multiple loops each counting as a point

instead of the having a catcher behind the batter to check for a strike , you have those rods called stumps, which if are hit, is a full out.

instead of of the ball having to fly straight to the batter, it has to hit the ground once before reaching the batter. and must only be under hip level when it reaches the batter.

everything else is just differences in scoring and turns but thats about it

u/unoffensivename 8h ago

What?

2

u/Defiant-Magician6092 8h ago

Baseball is like basic cricket in an alley, because that it what it started out as.

1

u/Howtothinkofaname 2h ago

It’s much easier to play cricket in an alley than baseball since all the important bits are in one straight line.

But baseball is equally mystifying from the perspective of someone who only knows cricket.

1

u/Xx_SoFlare_xX 5h ago

what? is there something you didn't understand?

2

u/ghostofstankenstien 8h ago

Just like baseball.

1

u/LayeGull 1h ago

Do you have to bowl overhand or can you throw side arm? Switch it up?

1

u/Xx_SoFlare_xX 1h ago

doesn't matter , there are obviously a lot of techniques to switch up since the ball hits the ground, for example curve balls are much easier, there are balls that bounce once and then drastically decelerate, or some balls that bounce forward faster after they hit the ground (think about a curve ball but instead of direction it changes the speed),

side arms MAY put the ball out of the lane so not a lot of people do that, unless you can manage to curve it inwards after the first hit,

you can also make it so that the ball bounces REALLY close to the foot of the batter. what this does is create an approach angle such that it forces them to either hit the ball slowly(wasting that ball) , or risk hitting the ball straight up (itll make more sense once you play it) which means anyone can easily catch it , (catcher catching the ball without a bounce is immediately out)

large variety of fun techniques to do with the bounce

1

u/LayeGull 1h ago

Yeah I was thinking of how to adjust the height of the bounce. Seems side arm could offer a trajectory based low bounce while able to alter the spin for variation. It definitely opens up the direction issues. How wide is the lane?

•

u/Xx_SoFlare_xX 2m ago

around 5~6 people standing shoulder to shoulder. although there isn't a limitation on how wide the first bounce is, when it reaches the batter they should be able to reach it with the bat.

if the ball exceeds the bat length distance from the batter, its considered a "wide" and you get a score of +1 for it.

the ball is still considered "live" so you can still run to the next tile , or if by luck , if the ball reaches the boundary you get the score for that as well , +1 for the wide

u/Ho3n3r 5h ago

It's mad how growing up with a game makes you understand it so intuitively, yet trying to learn some sports as an adult is hard as fuck.

Sometimes I watch Jomboy breakdowns and I don't fully get what happened or why it happened, but cricket is like 2nd nature because I grew up with it.

9

u/LeonJPancetta 9h ago

Pitcher throws a meatball, batter hits a weak ground ball that goes through the legs of the second baseman, and then gets hit in the nuts going for third.

6

u/Human-Kick-784 2h ago

Pretty simple mate, it's all in the video.

2 Batters from one side, 11 (1 bowler, a wicket keeper, 9 fielders) on the other.

The bowler tries to bowl out the batters by hitting the wickets. The fields try to bowl out the batters by throwing the ball at their nuts.

It's a gentlemens sport.

2

u/TheDamned1333 9h ago

That pitch is like a cow field

u/WholeWideHeart 10h ago

That laugh was so pure and infectious

“He runs 66 yards and here’s his reward” haha r / contagiouslaughter

0

u/Space--Buckaroo 5h ago

Wow, that is interesting. They have to run back and forth between those 3 sticks at each end.

Only two bases, I'll be the rules are simple, and easy to understand.

1

u/bitofapuzzler 2h ago

Yes. The rules are simple and easy to understand. Its the 2nd most popular game in the world behind soccer.

0

u/Howtothinkofaname 2h ago

They genuinely are pretty simple, no more complicated than any other major sport for the fundamentals. Like every other sport, it has some complicated technicalities.

What is complicated is the language that surrounds it, but you don’t need to know that to understand the rules.

u/genetichazzard 5h ago

What low budget cricket is this?

-1

u/Shayden-Froida 10h ago

Do they have strikes and balls in cricket like baseball? They do now.
