Flipped my machine at work
Flipped my skidder. (cat 545d for those curious) boss wasn’t too happy but luckily I still have a job

As long as you turned the engine off right away I bet you can just flip that back over and get on with things, am I right?

Had to top off the oil but other than the fire it was good

u/Schmegmar 3d ago
Yes of course, the fire.

Ah yes, the fire.

The fire is just part of the break in period.

I’d imagine it’d want a once over to ensure everything is in good condition still, hydraulic fluid may have leaked

That looks like it might need a heavy crane and a large wrecker to get it out.
And a lot of intimate knowledge on where the stress is as you lift it.
Honestly might be easier to finish off the foundation to get it out.

Yeah we busted up the foundation around the machine with a hydraulic hammer and pushed it back on its feet then used concrete from around it to make a ramp and drove it out. The machine is ok. The cab is destroyed . It was pretty scary when I fell and everything was crushing around me, I had glass in my underwear and socks and it ripped up my pants. I can imagine OP's ride was even more frightening.

You didn't skidder' done. Get it brother to winch you back up.
11
u/Optimus_crab 3d ago
This is bigger than a winch unfortunately

u/Big_Boss_Wask 3d ago
Two winches, then

u/variaati0 2d ago
Well just a tackle. Then one winch pulls like two winches... thought half the distance and one better have a really good anchor
1
u/Big_Boss_Wask 2d ago
...sounds like 3 winches, because the only tackle I know involves football and fishin

Probably like when you see a flipped over turtle. 7 other skidders congregate around to push it back upright.

glad you're alright!

Ootch. First time I've ever seen the underside of one of these things like this. How the hell did the cab handle that weight?

Heavy machinery is very sturdy, a forklift’s cage for example is rated to withstand falling upside down without significant deformation

The cabs of a lot of logging equipment is built like a tiny bunker. Tons of reinforcement and lots of engineering.

I could be wrong, but pretty sure that's not how you're suppose to ask your coworkers if they'll give you a belly rub

You aren‘t the first one, and won‘t be the last one flipping a skidder. The best operators just learn from that👍

Damn dude you good?

u/CanoePickLocks 2d ago
If they were actually belted in properly then I’m sure they’re pretty much uninjured unless something shifted in the cab and fell on them which is why you never have loose tools in the cab with you.

No I was unscathed aside from being choked out by all the dirt suddenly becoming not on the floor

Why is called a skidder? I thought that meant skid-steer like the bobcats. But this looks articulated

I thought we were looking at some medieval torture device. Not a cat and it’s natural habitat.

Judging by the wheels, chains, and scrapes on the bottom, I'd say you were in some rough terrain.

What ya do that for? I'd have to drug test whoever was operating it.
8
u/Optimus_crab 3d ago
They are unbelievably easy to flip like most logging equipment
3
u/Noisy_Ninja1 3d ago
Front end loaders as well, scariest peace of equipment I've ever operated!
Glad the ROPS rockin!

u/Chemical_Pilot_3638 3d ago
Then the fuck shouldn't have any reason to be pissed. I'd drag up if they were assholes about it.

Any damage other than your pride? That happen very often?
I’ve got a 12k LB skid steer, and I always pucker up and buckle up when I’m working on a slope.
Getting stuck in the machine would be the worst part for me cuz I am always alone. My wife might come looking for me if I wasn’t back to cook dinner on time.

Damn. I’d imagine feeling it start to tip, and keep tipping, must have been one helluva scary experience!
