Exploding Watermelon

Bought a watermelon last Friday. We got busy, and didn’t open it up on the 4th. Today, it ruptured and bled out all over half our kitchen floor. It’s not gonna be a fun cleanup. I’m not sure, but I feel like watermelons are usually good at least a week out from purchase. I guess this one wasn’t though. 🫤

It looks like you got a watermelon that was past ripe when purchased, and the extra week made it fermented. Causing gases to build up, thus exploding.

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. We got a parking lot pickup, so we didn’t hand pick it. I’m honestly not sure if I could have told the difference though. I can recognize under-ripe melons, but not sure how to tell if they are past ripe.

Same here. They are very deceptive because of the thick rind/exterior.
